You have waaaaaaaaaay too much time on your hands, mi amigo.

I've got a scanner, Zip100 USB drive, MS sidewinder gamepad (game port), MS Precision 2 joystick, and a Palm VIIx with serial adapter. Of course, I really don't even use this stuff. I bought the joystick for playing descent 3---which I haven't installed since I used Win2k, LOL. $50 down right their ;( I also have two PC's I'm not using much...well that fileserver is kinda important.

I suppose I'll have to try Linux again, as my initial problem with the network is taken care of.

I've seen 3 maxtors blow out, but they were under warranty and the RMA process involves no BS from them. I've been happy with every Western Digital drive I've come across, as none of them have failed yet. The most screwed up one got was the power connector is a little loose, but I don't plan on taking it out of the fileserver anytime soon.

They had some discussion over at the AMDMB forums. Apparently, it does not give the "unlimited voltage" it supposed to. I believe it tops out at 1.85V, like many boards seem to.

Yup. Which drives are they, BTW? Are you doing RAID 1 or 0?

Need to buy a good DSL modem...Which brand and model ??
Brian Frank replied to Klark's topic in Hardware
Over here in Fort Wayne, using Hypervine (setup when they were Fort Wayne Internet), we've got a Fujitsu Seimens modem. I don't remember the exact cost, but I believe it was somewhere around $150. I don't know about any other modems, but this one's be chuggin' away since we got the DSL. -
Quote: When I managed to boot I couldn't enter any directories and/or move any files. With the 'new' microsoft XP BOOT disk, I AM able to change/move/look/write stuff in my HD? even from a 'dos prompt' ? Will I be able to boot with ms disks for XP, copy my files to the other FAT32 HD with no problems? Yes, you can use this 'dos prompt'. XP/2k can read and write NTFS, FAT12 (aka FAT), FAT16, and FAT32. The filesystem should not be an issue with Roxio EZ CD-Creator, at least it wasn't here. However, it is know to be a problematic program so you may want to look into Nero.

Here's mine (please no red X of death)

I think you'll have enough space now

I've only ordered on-line twice, both times from Newegg. They have great, prompt service. All parts were shipped FedEx and came in perfect condition.

I've got TV-out on an MSI GF2Ti, but if you want great text, it's not gonna happen. TV's aren't capable of as high of resolution as monitors. You're looking of resolutions of 640x480 or 800x600, maybe 1024x768 on some high-end models, but I don't think it get's much higher. TVs aren't made for fine text, it also depends on your TV too. I'm hooked up to a Toshiba 32" and it's one of the nicest images other than Sony (which are considerably more, and are a little better). The image isn't as good as I'd like either, but it's limited by the TV.

Nope, not yet, but I do have a couple of wallpapers from Planet Unreal, and they are sweet.

#1. Asus uses Promise RAID controllers. You have Asus or an Abit or Iwill board if you have the HPT controllers. On that note, I recall reading about the HPT370 controller and the baracuda drives running extremely poorly in RAID 0. I'm not sure if this happens with Promise controllers or not, as I haven't read about any issues. The IRQ sharing isn't a problem. You're not able to change this due to the way ACPI sets up devices. You have a bunch of devices on 1 IRQ, but your system thinks the devices all have their own IRQ. Do you notice it's slow without the benchmarks? Sandra doesn't give me all that great of scores and my RAID 0 array is really quick (although I use IBM 60GXP's).

Dunno man, that's all I can say. You might try a different cable, if possible.

He could be psychic;)

In your case, you were pretty fortunate. In most cases, this does screw with XP/2k and you have to reinstall.
-
Should work just fine. Unless it's some really off-brand stuff (which none of it is) you should have drivers available. I know Turtle Beach came out with their XP drivers pretty quickly, and all of that hardware is supported. You're ready to go.

I have to agree with BladeRunner here. Let's see here, Windows owns what, 95% of the OS market, Linux owns what 1%, if that. Now which OS can hurt more people if exploited? Gee, let's hurt 1% of the entire computing world instead of that 95% or so. Yeah right! Linux may be good for some things, but the home user desktop and ease of use are not where it shines. I've tried it and it's more work than it's worth. Any OS has it's own problems, but that in NO way means Windows sucks. XP is a new OS, granted, and, yes, MS OS's do have a few problems from the start. If MS waited to try and find every little problem, they'd never release anything, and neither would anyone else. Software will never be perfectly coded, because it's done by humans, who are imperfect.

I've had errors under 2k with the Promise Controllers, and I never had any issues with it. If you're not having problems, I wouldn't worry too much. I did have a board with the HPT370 controllers, but I never really checked the logs for any errors. If there were, I wasn't having a problem with it.

Have you tried manually downloading the update and then installing it?
-
I'm not sure. Did you check HighPoint's website?

Asus, Tyan, and SuperMicro are the top 3 motherboard manufacturers in terms of quality out there. When I overclocked with my A7V, the thing was extremely stable, and if it weren't for the KT133 not really being able to run an FSB of 133MHz, I most certainly would've gotten higher. I think the only boards that have been bad from Asus were the i820+MTH, and that was more Intel's fault than anything else. This obviously affected everyone using the i820+MTH, and I know Asus and Intel made amends to any customer that returned the board.

ABIT's 12 IDE channel mobo: New competition for SCSI?
Brian Frank replied to Ron_Jeremy's topic in Hardware
Well what you say is true, SHS, I still can tell a very noticeable difference with RAID 0 in loading certain games. It's not as big of a difference from a single 7200RPM drive, but when I originally did this, I was running a single 5400RPM drive. I'm not trying to argue here, but I just know it's very fast.
