I'm gonna try it out just to prove he's wrong though. I've got enough parts sitting around to toss a test PC for this experiment. I'm even gonna go at it the way he said he did: use Win2k or XP to format the drive as NTFS then go ahead and install 98.

I'd say the Asus P4B, but it's only got 3 DIMM slots last I checked. I like Asus.
-
I put SiS myself too. They just came out of left field with performance chipsets for cheap. I put ServerWorks in because they were the only other chipset manufacturer I could think of, and because I felt like it:p

Oh, and I'm running all 3 of my machines with Via chipsets---all working just fine. Also, if it was the Apollo Pro 133 chipset, that my easily explain why. The 133A (as usual) fixes those issues.

Well, if your friend would get some more memory, he might see an improvement. 128 is really the bare minimum you want to run Win2k or XP with, and 256 is a lot better. Also, while Sandra has it's uses, it's not a good real world benchmark.

Almost correct. Unless there are specific USB drivers for NT, it's no go, unfortunately.

It's supposed to be closer to XP, but geared toward the server setting as I understand it. In otherwords, Microsoft won't be selling it at your local best buy or whatever. It will likely cost more than either version of XP, unless MS decides to slash the price--yeah right ;(

Anybody have this monitor? I'm considering it for my monitor upgrade, and I'd like to know what owners think about it before I drop the cash down for it.
-
That's fine. I have several reasons I need a new monitor, one being that a limit of 1280x1024 sucks for reviewing video cards, and another being I could use more space on my Windows desktop for working tasks.

winxp ntfs and win2k ntfs compatibility
Brian Frank replied to rgodart's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Yup. I haven't used them under 2k/XP, save one time and never did it again. -
From what I understand, the Ti4600 is supposed to be the "Ultra" version.

Oh, and as for the AMD760 lineup with the registered memory, I wasn't referring to just the dual CPU setups specifically. While it's not a bad thing to have registered ram, the thought of having to using to use more than 2 slots on a non-server board is kind of a turn off to some people, especially if they don't require it. (tweakers and enthusiasts).

Possible Solution for Infinite Loop,Nvidia,BSOD's

Good to hear. I've been mulling over whether to flash to the YT BIOS or not. -
Very well put pmistry and catdog02. Short and sweet.

Check T-Break for details. They've got the goods on the GF4. BTW, it's just another hardware site, but I think I saw some MSRP prices their.

I'll have to agree with AMD's chipsets sliding a bit. I know that the USB isn't the most critical part, but still that just makes the 760MPX look bad just for that. The NMI errors are certainly an issue, and the RAM slots are disappointing in that you need registered RAM in all board (except the KG7---bleh!) with any variant of the 760 chipset if you want to use more than 2 slots. Like I say, I've had good luck with Via, and I'll continue to use it at home. May not be everybody's fav, but it works for me. The Nforce is definitely cool, but I don't need it right now. However that would be a great chipset if I needed to toss together a new system quickly.

winxp ntfs and win2k ntfs compatibility
Brian Frank replied to rgodart's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I ran a dual-boot with XP RC1 and Win2k for a while and Win2k was fine with the XP NTFS version. -
You'd be surprised at what people have in their homes. I know quite a few people at different forums that have a ton of PC's.

Where I work, some punk kids keep coming onto the property and skateboard around. We've told them not to, but these little pukes don't seem to get it. This past saturday (feb 2) one of the guys I work with got a bunch of names from some little squirts, so we know the punks who continue to come back. Today (Sun) 5 of us on the shift got the upper hand on these guys. We basically told them we were calling the cops--we didn't but a few of the punks started to cry and they all left. Now we're all just waiting for them to come back so we can screw with their minds again. I'm working on some lines to say to the next skateboarder to come on property. "You aren't supposed to be on this property" "Why?" "Number 1, we don't want you to be here, and number 2 if you don't I'm gonna have the cops come and drag you to Wood Youth Center (local juvenile prison)." Anybody got some other, legal, non-harmful, means of scaring the hell out of these guys.
-
It's just that I've been told specifically that skateboarders aren't allowed to skate on the property. Some skateboarders were caught trying to get into one of the storage barns, and besides the breaking and entering part they could steal stuff (why they'd want to steal the stuff we store in there is beyond me), if one of them got injured we could be held liable. I'm following orders, otherwise I wouldn't care.

AMD so far seems to create a chipset and manufacture it just long enough until Via, SiS, and ALi come out with chipsets to support their cpu's. Nothing wrong with that, but if AMD keeps dropping the ball on Via and everyone else, I don't really see them becoming a viable server solution. I like AMD, but as it stands right now, they don't have anything, other than speed going for them if they refuse to pump out their own chipset and keep it out. They still have a few bugs to work out (760MPX USB issue), but they do have solid chipsets overall. Too bad they're really on their 2nd one the 760 series

No. I have a legal copy that doesn't require activation. Bummer man.
