The only problem with that is the HL series will render a black screen when you escape out of a game. That's very annoying.

Do you find MS Servers to be inherently unstable?
Brian Frank replied to clutch's topic in Slack Space
Oh, speaking of games, didn't Loki Games file for bankrupcy? The biggest supplier of Linux game ports. Of course their major fall was from not having a port of half-life and counterstrike:p -
Not all the time, tho. They fixed some stability issues I was having. Oh, whoisurdaddy, does the BSOD list any files in it? That'll be your culprit most likely;)

Dang! I'll have to keep this page marked, cause this has happend to me before. Nice BBA.

Well I got a stick of 256MB PC2100 DDR and my T-Bird 1.4GHz AYHJA-Y:D and my Vantec CCK-6027D. The Vantec is actually a tad quiter than the FOP 32 I had on the Duron 8)

My IBM 60GXP's get fairly warm, but not so hot as to be considered for the "ouch" test. My maxtor in my room PC isn't even close to being warm. It's not cold, just room temperature, if that. Being in the basement also helps.

Mines almost done too, save for the hdd's coming back from RMA.

Likewise, I wouldn't recommend putting it on the same partition either. I'm not sure who, I think CrazyKillerMan or ThC129 did a dual boot with Win2k and 98 on the same partition at one point. Not sure how well it worked out though.

Sandra 2001te says my hdd in RAID 0 score 20130. I have the WK BIOS on my VP6. See specs in sig.

Oh, and MS, these should be optional: Windows Messenger, NetMeeting, MediaPlayer, Movie Maker. Screw what people say about IE, this is the crap that needs to go. XP is nice, but overrated.

Well, I've found that the 23.11 drivers caused many problems and in the course of trying to figure out my problem I did what was probably an unnecessary reinstall. Back to the 21.81's. I just had to install the 4-in-1's on my duallie and it's been happy ever since. I own Via board's and am proud of it:D So far, user error: 3, MS OS: 0.

PC's aren't exactly easy for many people (hence PC techs and such) and Linux and easy to use are words I'd use together in a discriptive sentance. I'm still finding out new stuff about Windows. I've tried Linux out and there is a good reason it is not the #1 OS: it's harder to use. MS ain't perfect, but the NT code is rather stable in the hands of a competent person (I don't always fall into this category). I don't want to sound like I'm selling my soul to MS (too late anyway:p), but Windows is a helluva lot easier to run, install, and use than Linux. -
M4--which benches. I can whip out sandra real quick and run some stuff. Don't know how great it'll be, but oh well. I'm using the HPT370 controller, FYI. All I know is that UT loads rather quickly on this system.

Yeah, cases are becoming expensive nowadays with all the cool designs. Well, my CPU and heatsink have been shipped. I should see them wednesday or thursday. AYHJA 1.4GHz T-bird...mmm. Bad news is I'm gonna have to get used to a hair dryer in my room. Oh well, speed has it's price.
-
Heh. XP beta's and RC's were twenty bucks a shot. That's a helluva lot cheaper than Lindows.

If you want a cheap duallie board, the ECS 6DVAA. It can be had for around $60, making it the cheapest duallie board available. It has optional HighPoint HPT370 RAID. It's based on the Via Apollo Pro 133A chipset with the 686B southbridge. Pentium 3's go in it. Unless you have a buttload of cash, the (P4) Xeon's are gonna be waaaaay too expensive. They would be nice to have, tho. I haven't really had problems with AMD chips, but that's me. I'm really not partial for the home setting between the companies in the desktop market. Corporate scenario, Intel and ServerWorks (big $$$$$$$) all the way. Your system looks pretty tight M4, so you could always hold onto it, or get that case. Nice rig, Inferno. How ya like your 60GXP? My 2 in RAID 0 are rather quick Nice jet-engine too:p

I haven't run into the problems most people have, at least as far as Via is concerned. I'm very well aware that I am in a very distinct minority here, and that a good chunk of people have had Via related issues. My computer issues tend to stem from user error, and sometimes OS error. I've read the Via horror stories, and the animosity toward them is very understandable. I haven't had issues with Via, and I have had 5 via-based boards, only one busted. I sold another one in perfect working order (to fund my duallie). For server settings, I wouldn't use something that could be bad news for me if it went down the tubes at all. I'd stick with Intel and ServerWorks in this case, especially considering I don't have to pay for it. For home use, yes, Via is fine, IMO. At the current stage, Via, and AMD would be inappropriate for the server environment. Via has had a bad history, and this is AMD's first step into the server ring--with no prior record to back it up. If it works for you, go for it.
-
Yeah, you're pretty boarderline. Add a faster graphics card, more ram, another drive...that's asking for trouble, IMO. Personally, you'd be cutting it close for my tastes.
-
Whoops. Db post.

How much is burning a hole in your pocket? I suggest going to dual processors...

Personally, and I am going to be in the minority here, I like Via. I've thrown everything I can think of at a Via chipset, and lived to tell. SBLive! +686B working right now. I've still got one or two pieces that were presents, but for the most part, my PC's are all from my money. I like Via, and for home use and for me, it has proven to be a good solution for me. Would I use Via in a server setting? No, mainly because I'm not ignorant enough to think that businesses will be okay with it. Also, I know they've been doing server stuff longer than AMD, and have been doing it well. At this point, every last bit of speed ain't as important as your job. Rambus is good in a server setting, but not for the average joe. Also, while Intel may be concerned with the future of computing, a number of people are concerned with the fastest performance for the least buck. Also, Sandra really ends up being a good benchmark for generic systems and raw performance. When it comes to complex systems (i.e. SMP setups), it doesn't give the best picture overall. We all know the current P4 incarnation is a POS. I don't really have any allegience, save my wallet, and I think that AMD's PR system will go out the window when compared to the Northwood. I am amazed how SiS has fared within the past year. Now, SiS and performance can actually be used in relation to each other, and ment seriously. ALi...well, they are still trash, and IMO, always will be. I don't care what the reviews have said, Acer Labs is incapable of producing a quality product of anything.

dvdrom and cdr message: disk in drive not formatted....
Brian Frank replied to cooluhl's topic in Hardware
Weird. Well, hey, glad ya got a fix for it. -
The 64-bit PCI slots have been out for awhile, but most on server boards (and still are last time I checked). SCSI RAID cards are prime candidates for these babies, since they need all the bandwith they can get. Off the top of my head, I can't think weather this will apply to PCI-X or not.

Oh, well.
