Buy Norton Internet Security 2002.

I say buy Klipsch. If that's too much the Creative Inspire 5300 5.1 would be a nice bet @ $100USD

You're right, but at least when they get out drivers they don't suck completely. ATI has done a 180 in driver development here. They still could use some work, but now they are actually making drivers to take advantage of the hardware---something they are still slow on gettting around to. You've probably been able to tell that I haven't been a real fan of ATI in the past, but the Radeon 8500 is the best I've seen from ATI in a long time.

Yes. Try dropping it back some. I've found XP to be very finecky about overclocking. Unreal and UT-based games are much more CPU intesnsive than video card intensive, and that sounds like your CPU cannot handle that high of speeds. Drop the speed down until you don't get anymore errors, and live with it. It doesn't matter how high you can go and still get into Windows. It matters that your overclock is not unstable from what you can tell.

ks.sys is the problem. If that is related to ACPI, then yes, that'd be a slight problem. XP does need a service pack, but I don't think it is the problem because: He's running Windows 2000 SP2. As for sluggish performance, you might want to think about picking up another stick of 128.

And even if it was done during assembly, are you l33t enough to change the code yerself? Probably not...I know I'll never be l33t on the software side.

RAID XP w/ Promise o/b A7V133 - results/contrasts here pleas
Brian Frank replied to Papercup's topic in Hardware
What does this HP stand for: Hewlett Packard? HighPoint? 2nd, I don't know about any Promise filter driver. I don't recall any XP driver for the promise controllers. (Promise can suck my...) Oh, and Sandra is a nice benchmarking suite, but not always the most accurate. HDTach, Intel's IOmeter...much better. I know the same thing you're talking about with the RAID thing and Sandra. My 60GXP's score seems awfully low, but I know these are very fast in RAID 0. -
Is speed the only factor that we should judge chipsets? I like Via, but Intel does not ever BS with you on the chipset front. Even with the i820, it wasn't the chipset itself that was a problem, it was a separate chip. the i820 functioned perfectly by itself. SiS has come a long way, but Intel is only possibly trumped by ServerWorks as far as chipsets go. Rethinking some stuff earlier, the most improved award should go to SiS or ATI.

The 845 is a joke in the sense that Intel is now giving the okay to pair it with DDR, but people are talking about it like it's the next BX. I'd certainly lean toward the Radeon 8500 for product of the year, as I have one. I'd also go for SiS as company of the year.

Well my big bash was today, the 24th. Some of my fav gifts were a Palm Pilot VIIx and an APC 350Backups. I got some CD's: Toxicity by System of a Down and Golden State by Bush. I got some clothing and quite a bit of food. I still got tomorrow to find out what else I'll get.

Recommendation for 4 ch sound card that works under XP Pro
Brian Frank replied to tdavie's topic in Hardware
Okay, I still fail to see what that proves on that link, other than people who are confused or idiots. If you wanted us to see something, that wasn't the correct link. If it was, that's a dumb link that fails to prove your point. -

LOL! I'm gonna have a hard time keepin people from thinking I have boobies. I just hope other guys don't hit on me. Why did I register with a girls name? I have no clue, other than "I felt like it." But, hey, TT is a very cool site, IMO. This scenario is just too funny.

Sorry to be a heartbreaker. Have some G&T.

Well, I got some more MHz outta the ol Duron. got it up to 1074MHz, so far so good. I can make it hit 1.1GHz, but I'm unable to get it to run stable at that level, and I've maxed out the voltage without doing any modifications. I'll probably get another stick of DDR in the future. Hopefully I can pick up a PSU next, cuz I'll need it when I get an Athlon XP.

Recommendation for 4 ch sound card that works under XP Pro
Brian Frank replied to tdavie's topic in Hardware
The Game Theater seems to have some driver issues last I checked. One card I'd probably avoid is the line from Philips, they seem to have the most trouble from what I've read. The Turtle Beach card seems to be a good bet, but I'd still go with the Audigy. -

Brian Frank replied to tdavie's topic in Hardware
Dude, they're assuming that because of the live. I have been running Via chipsets for awhile. I have an Audigy and haven't had a signle problem with it yet. The problems you've heard are more akin to the BSLive!, which I'd stay the hell away from. If you don't feel comfortable with an Audigy, the Hercules Fortissimo II is $60 in local stores and doesn't have Live! issues. The Audigy is a good card, and most of the hostilities are held over from the BSLive! era. A few people have had problems, but nowhere near the amount that the Live! had. I'd highly recommend the Audigy.
