Eh, everything's working fine right now, so I'm gonna let it be. I'm kinda done installing OS's for the time being. Now it's time to tweak the hell out of it and see how XP fares.

Having trouble with NetBEUI? Here's the fix!!!
Brian Frank replied to Brian Frank's topic in Networking
Yup. TCP/IP for the net. -
I tend to abide by the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" when it comes to the BIOS, but I am thinkin it couldn't hurt. I am enjoying the whole RAID 0 lovin thing, tho.

Win2k pro supports up to 2GB of RAM. XP does too. Gee...I dunno about that 512megs thing;)

What sound card does he have? Check the mixer software that came with the card because it should have something to get the 4-speaker output working. The only other thing I can tell you is if this happens to be the Guillemot Maxi Sound Fortissimo (not the Hercules Game Surround Fortissimo II) you will see rear speaker output the same time pigs fly, because yamaha's 2k drivers don't support rear speaker out.

You must have the first partition on the drive (C:\)formatted as FAT32. Install 98 on C:\ like normal. Then boot off your XP disk and hit F2 at the beginning to do the Automated System Recovery. BTW, while it can be done, having XP as NTFS will be a major fubar as 9x CANNOT read NTFS.

Having trouble with NetBEUI? Here's the fix!!!

It works. It's secure. It's easiest. -
Actually, I did, but I don't remember since I didn't use it too long before moving to 2k.

Right with ya clutch! It's really funny how, say, some of the linux crew, say how unstable Windows is. Well, yeah, if we're talking 9x and earlier, but not 2k/XP. 40% of the market? Please. Linux has a lot of work before it's not laughable as a desktop replacement. There are about as many different distributions (major) available, plus you get into debian and redhat distros to further complicate things. And do forget, if you are the 1337 h4><0r type, you can whip out yer own distro. Loki Games is sort of going down the toilet. It's rare to see people make drivers for Linux, and even rarer to see them supported in these cases. You still have to fool around with settings to get devices to work. The next best alternative, by a distant second, is Apple's Mac OS X and the Darwin kernel for the x86 platform. People are pissed that Gates is rich and Torvalds isnt. Torvalds is also part of Transmeta, the company we all hear about and never see anything. We'll see a resurgance of Steven Jobs and the Mac sooner than Torvalds and his Linux will take over the desktop. Linux is like a chicken (or penguin) with it's head cut off.

Having trouble with NetBEUI? Here's the fix!!!

Well, I would've taken clutch's suggestion, but there is one tiny little problem: My dad refuses to stop using NetBEUI at home, and that pretty much fu><0r5 me if I try to use anything else. -
Okay, I'm stumped. I've got to use NetBEUI at home, so removing it is not an option, unfortunately. My Win2k rig can see XP across the network, but it's not working vise versa. It did work in Beta 2 and RC1 (never tried RC2). I've tried taking NetBEUI off the RC1 disk to no avail. Networking services/protocols installed under XP MS file & printer sharing QoS TCP/IP NetBEUI Same thing under 2k. What gives? I've switched the DHCP options around with the radio buttons, but haven't fooled with IP addresses. This is the only thing that's raining on my parade with XP so far... Bill Gates won again... ;( BTW, I searched the posts what we had for XP. No luck with the suggestions. Specs in sig FYI

Got the fix in MS Knowledgebase How to get NetBEUI working in XP. Thanks for the help, tho. And XP's firewall was dropped.

Which Nvidia drivers? The 22.80's like to BSOD me with my GF2Ti and I've ditched that version. The 21.83's work great for me, FYI. Try resetting the BIOS to the defaults and go from there. The RAM ns sounds fine to me, and I don't think the ECC has anything to do with it.

PC with XP hands down. Duh! I've realized one thing: no matter how cool consoles are they are easily smacked down by PC's. While it is advantageous to have one platform to make a game for, consoles are becoming more and more PC-ish. Not worth it, sirs. Are there dual processor consoles? I dont think so:D

Says it all. Makes doing webpages a hell of a lot easier and error free! That and a nice student discount got me it for ten bucks...

Nope.

You don't have to, but I suggest the following setup C:SWAPFILE 1.5GB NTFS, D:WINXP 5.5GBNTFS,E:OTHER 33GB NTFS. The logic here is placing the swapfile at the front of the drive, then have Windows and serious apps (like office, photoshop, etc.) in the Windows drive. Then have a crap-load of space for other stuff: games, mp3, w4r3z;)... This way, when windows gets fscked up, you can just reformat the windows and swap partitons and just have to reinstall your games rather than reconfigure everything and lose all your saved games. There will be a zillion different responses to this question, but this is an example of how I have one of my machines. The other one has a nice 80GB RAID 0 NTFS drive. And do use NTFS, it can save yer arse if something fouls up--just don't mess with it when it's trying to fix your system back up.

How big of a PSU ya got? Shouldn't be any less than a 300W.

While I haven't run into that same problem exactly, I had some ram that acted funny on one machine--lockups and soforth--but didn't have any issues in other machines. Sometimes ram may also not like the other ram you have= problems.

While I won't touch a BSLive! with a 10-ft pole, I have no qualms about the Audigy. No problems--love it! The live doesn't have anything to do with the Audigy. no problems, especially via related.

Admin tools should also be in Control Panel.

XP's firewall is off. I would ditch NetBEUI, except I have one minor problem: My dad says which protocols we have to use, not vise versa. If someone can convince him to ditch NB, be my guest. I've gotten it down that I may need to work with some permissions on Win2k machines to get this to work. Win2k can see XP, but not vise versa. I also got a tip to check out MS knowledgebase for how to properly install NetBEUI.

Take a look at this Win XP 6in1

Nice red X's there, telthenipper. -
The \\server\share doesn't work when I'm trying to add my other system. It times out and says the share doesn't exist. I can see our workgroup, but not any machines on it. I've created the shares for the drives I want to access. I'm doing a synchronization backup across the network and making the files available offline--which is sort of important to me. I've played with enabling and disabling NetBIOS to no avail on both machines.

Except when the full version stops working for no good reason.
