how do i enable agp fast writes and side band addressing
Brian Frank replied to Four and Twenty's topic in Hardware
Just d/l the GeForce Tweak Utility. Has tons of crap, including sideband addressing and fast writes controls. -
You can go to best buy and grab a reservation box for 10 bucks, so you're guaranteed one.

Well, it's not in space all the time, but Descent 3 is friggin' awesome! Only reason I bought a joystick.
-
You did install the 3dfx tools, right. I didn't remember them installing on their own. Not insulting your intelligence or anything...just covering an obvious thing, y'know.

Good nite that thing is huge! 8) Wish I had some of those in a RAID 5 array. Ooohhh, yeah, baby!

how do i enable agp fast writes and side band addressing
Brian Frank replied to Four and Twenty's topic in Hardware
I know there's a way, which escapes me. From what I'm told, it's not a big deal, because it doesn't give you enough of a bump to justify the potential for instability. Uhhh...you might wanna try some new dets, 22.50's I believe didn't disable this...think that's right, not sure tho. I know there's some other ways to do it, just can't remember. -
Ouch! 8) I can feel your pain, except for the hdd going, but I did have to reformat C:, meaning i still have to reinstall everything. Hard drive failure is a beeeatch!

Hiya, nagetech. You'll figure out who I am;)

Well, I don't have the GF2 Pro, but I do have the GF2 Ti. Got the PNY Verto GF2 Ti, and am working on a review of it. It's a slick card visually. I'm probably going to get a different part or two for a friend (can't stand that crappy FIC AZ11 he has...and neither can he!) Of course, something got screwed up, so I had to reformat C: on the 'Star Destroyer. Nothing to save Thank god for partitions

Nope. All new. Have no clue as to why, but the first sign of trouble was Norton Internet Security's rat program refused to let me access any site. I rebooted, and chkdsk had a heyday. When I rebooted, none of my settings, including my e-mails were gone. Some links to Windows apps were shot, and there was nothing on C: to save, so I just reformatted this morning. I was really peeved and it was late so I ditched it before I became violent with my rig. This is a good reason to have partitions. I also used the synchronozation and made the files available offline on the Samurai Pro. 'Backed up' while I reformatted C:

As the Admin over there is offering to host my site, and the fact that I really do like the YaBB system he's using, I'm taking this opportunity to pimp a new board. Beta Board Elite Please sign up if you're intrested. Don't worry, I'll still hang around here (or is that a bad thing;))
-
Not sure, but their is some history to it. I'm reformatting on of my machines right now, so my main apps aren't available currnetly (like e-mail ) This isn't my site, but when someone comes up to you and offers you something, you tend to want to do something in return.;)That's why I'm pimping it. It's a small community deal with the websites, but the main reason I'm jumping is that I can have advertisements on my website rather than have the annoying popup ads, which everybody hates. Not trying to avoid the question, but I just don't have an answer. I guess this is just to "share the wealth" and help a man out. They are trying to get member status up as their are very few members on the board. I don't know if they want to become the size of the [H]ardForum, but bigger than the 15 or so people last time I checked.

Man, my purchasing life is a living hell! Today, I get badgered by some jerk at Electronics Boutique blasting Win2k and telling me that my Audigy would be better under XP--with no good reason other than it was his opinion, which I mind--and then telling me to buy a Radeon 8500--even after I told him about my woeful experience with the original Radeon. Also, I've been empty handed from another local store for almost 5 months. First, the P3 667 vendor, Intel they say, was playing with them, so after 2 and a half months I told them to scrap that and get me a GF2 Pro. That vendor was BSing them for two months, they claim. Now they've ordered from Newegg a week ago from this past Wednesday. Next Friday, if they don't have it, I'm demanding my money from the parts I traded in on June 7! All I can say is, as much as I dislike Circuit City, these clowns take the cake. And that is really bad, folks.
-
Basically, XP is more work than it's worth, though I'll end up doing running it eventually ;( I'm just BSing for now. All the games I want to play run just fine in 2k. XP is no more stable than 2k. XP has crap I don't want (Movie Maker, Windows Messenger, more newbie targeted stuff to turn off) and have to "hack" the OS to remove them. Product Craptivation...'nuff said. Microsoft: XP is the best Windows yet! Me: Compared to what? ME? Of course anything is better than ME, Windows 1.0 is better!!!! WinXP is Win2k with more bells and whistles; that's it folks. For 9x users, it's the best thing since the wheel; for many 2k users, it's a purty GUI. Man, JDul would be mighty pissed if he was still here (thankfully, he's not!)

C'mon, yak. If you have a "slow" cpu, like 400MHz, that could be a problem, but probably not. A PPro, I can understand, but just about anything beyond that should be enough for a software modem. I had a USB modem, before we got DSL:D, and it worked great---until my uncle killed it in a t-storm by not plugging it in to the grounded outlet ;(.

What's yer specs?

The only advantage is that you'll use 1 less DIMM slot with a stick of 512 as opposed to 2x256, leaving you with more space to add an extra stick or two later on. That's it. Performance is irrelevent, things being equal.

Barracuda IVs INCOMPATIBLE with HPT370 RAID controller!
Brian Frank replied to lammypie's topic in Hardware
The one thing I like about the HPT370 is when it's integrated into a mobo, it's not castrated like the Promise RAID controllers are. You can use the drives independently if you don't have equal sized drives instead of being forced to use RAID 0 or 1, no choice about it:( The best are the 3Ware Escalades that are being produced anymore. Tough break with the Seagates:( -
It's been a long time since I've used a dial-up connection (LPB and proud of it:D), but creative's modem blaster USB connected higher than what I'd had before--a POS Rockwell. Also, one PC I worked on had a very fast 56k fax modem by Zoom. It also depends on the neighborhood you're in. The Zoom modem was in a newer part of town then where I live, but the creative connected at 45000-49xxx k almost all the time.

Windows 2000 with an old computer
Brian Frank replied to chronos's topic in Customization & Tweaking
The RAM is above the minimum, but the CPU is the bare minimum required to run---which isn't that big of a deal. When you have a few extra $$ to spend, look into buying a slightly faster CPU for more speed. That, and if you're using SDRAM, might want to bump it up a little more. Yer lookin' at no more than USD$50 total. Don't spend more than that. A hardware upgrade would do you more good than turning off services. -
Dunno. Not a SCSI guru (yet) sooooooooooo.....I have no opinion. ;(
-
UT still rox under 3dfx cards.

what is best setting for optimizing page file?
Brian Frank replied to AMDguy's topic in Customization & Tweaking
VP6er here too. I don't have a RAID array going yet, but I think I'm getting a couple of drives for my B-day coming up, at which point I'll try it out. (new article, w00t:D) -
Has anyone tried the Athlon XP on a Abit KT7A mobo revision
Brian Frank replied to imtim83's topic in Hardware
I don't see why not. If you want confirmation, check out AMDMB's forums and the Abit motherboard section. -
It's scary when stupid people try to sell stuff to ignorant people. I wonder if these places actually make sure their employees know what the hell they're talking about. We all know that the last time AMD and Intel were interchangable was during the ol Socket 7 days. "I have RAMBUS. Can I put one of them AthlonXP's in with my Pentium 4" "Sure, no problem. While your at it, you'll see a performance boost from some DDR RAM. You can drop it in, no problem." "Oh, okay" "Sure, no problem" ;(
