May want to let Philip or SHS know about this so they can add it to the 3dfx FAQ. Oh, and BTW: post XP questions in the XP section;)

Get Media Player 7.1, QuickTime, and RealPlayer if you haven't. Media player can be had from Microsoft's Windows update site, Quick Time from Apple, and Real player from real.com

Sort of off topic (as usual): Every now and then, we get a call from people calling Northeastern MRI. Our phone # is really close, and people screw it up, including some companies. Me: Hello...hello? Them: Is this NE MRI? Me: Nope. Wrong number. Them: Oh, I'm sorry. Me: Don' worry, we get this call rather often. It's entertaining

Oooh. Too bad about the MX eddie. I'm keeping my in the Imperial Star Destroyer and putting the Pro (if I get it) in the Samurai Pro. Oh, update: If the Pro isn't in by this Friday, they are going to give me my money for the hardware I traded in. I'll look around then and go from there.

From where? Here? 3dfx site (yes, it's still up)? VoodooExtreme?

Not sure if this will fix you up or not, but its worth a shot. 1: In BIOS, reserve an IRQ, such as 5--this may not be effective as Win2k and XP ignore the BIOS settings in regard to the IRQ. 2: Try moving the Live! to a different slot. I do know the Audigy has not given me any trouble yet (haven't had much in hardware problems anyway) with my A7V--not exactly what you've got, but still similar config. I'm not saying go buy a new sound card right now, but just letting ya know that Creative didn't want the Live! troubles to continue.

Apparently, Partition Magic 7.0 has this capability, but I can't personally attest to it. The only other way is to reformat.

what is best setting for optimizing page file?
Brian Frank replied to AMDguy's topic in Customization & Tweaking
The recommended amount is between 1.5 and 2x your RAM, but it depends on what apps you use. Photoshop can't be too well fed. I personally just see what Win2k recommends for my settings and do that on the min and max values. If possible, put it by itself on the first partition of a drive. I'll tell you right now, this isn't a one-size-fits-all deal; you'll probably get a few different answers. I'm too lazy to do the simple math, so I just use whatever Windows recommends after the install. -
You've posted the funniest ways I've ever seen. I probably wouldn't do half of them, but they're funny as hell.

bump! Noooooooooo! Must...keep...thread...alive! Anyway, props to the SB Audigy. Schweet card. I don't know how I can ever live without rear speaker output again! Still don't have my GF2 Pro, and have taken it up with the BBB against the shop. Nearly 5 months, I'm empty-handed, and "It's shipped" is the only response I've gotten. "Show me the card or show me the money!" They don't have it by this friday, they better cough up my money, because my patience just ran out.

We got so sick of them, we got this $10 button that goes between the phone and the incoming physical line. If you feel pestered by the call, just hit the button for the message: "This number does not accept this type of call. Please remove it from you list." They are legally supposed to do this, too. It's not as funny though.

In light of this poor experience, I would like to point out a local shop that has consistantly given me excellent support. Stone Computer is here in Fort Wayne, IN and in Toledo, OH. They also ship to you. They normally have the highest prices in town, but their service is the best. They are not offened if you find a better deal elsewhere, they don't force opinions on you, they present information fairly and accurately, they know what they are talking about and what is currently going on. I don't mind paying a few extra bucks there. They are always polite as well. I'm not saying there aren't a few other good shops around, but Stone is the best in town. It is one of the places I'd really like to work at in town. They are an honest business that is there to make sure you are happy. Really, I don't think I can say how great this shop is.

Man, I'd love to see those pix, but all I'm getting is "Hosting for hardforum only" WTF? Maybe it's just me...I hope.

I've just been thinking (whoa, news right there!) about the common fixes that are given to resolve problems: Change the driver, Uninstall it or remove it Try a different one Change ________ in BIOS Reinstall it Flash your BIOS Pray to tech gods Plead to tech gods Grovel/weep to tech gods Patch it to ____ version Try the Compatibility app Reinstall Windows Make obscene gesture at computer Swear at computer Use "Gallagher" method to resolve problem;) Just buy a whole new system Switch to new OS:D

Voodoo2 is 2 old. It was great in it's time, but that time is a few years ago. SHS doesn't have to, and may not be able to make V2 XP drivers. Life sux, get on with it.
-
Amen, brutha! Loved 3dfx, but they're gone now. Life isn't fair. It is nice to see a 3rd party putting out Voodoo drivers now I will say. Now people should be happy--at least one can hope:D

I've been aware that Via has problems (you don't say...) and some viscious opponents. "Via's Apollo Pro 133/A is crap against the BX." Really? Let's see, at the time Intel offered two new chipsets for the Pentium III: the 810 and the 820. The 810 was clearly aimed at low cost systems and more for the Celeron, and the 820 had a little catch that mandated the (then) ridiculously expensive RDRAM. Intel later dug itself into a deeper hole after the infamous Memory Translator Hub fiasco. Meanwhile, Via comes along with the AGP4x and ATA66 the public wanted without the Rambus requirement. Sure Via did have problems, but Intel has yet to trump the BX themselves. The 815 came close, but the limit of 512MB of RAM hurt it's appeal. I'm not saying that Intel makes a bad product usually, but I find it hard to blame Via for not de-throning the BX when Intel hasn't done it either. Via had what people wanted, minus the not-so-great memory performance. "Stupid Via chipsets screw up with my hardware." I'll agree on one point: How Via wasn't able to notice a problem with the 686B and the SoundBlaster Live! that plauged the KT133A, is beyond me. Creative is a major player in the sound card biz, and the only thing I can come up with for a defense is luck for Via. Unfortunately, it's just been recently that Creative acknowledged the little problem. While Via didn't have a fix out the next day, they did something about it sooner than Creative. I've heard something about Creative apparently not following some specifications by Microsoft and Intel. If this is true, Via can't be penalized for another company's failure to follow certain guidelines. Another "blame Via" move comes from ATI. Apparently, the Radeon seems to have some issues with Via chipsets. ATI recommends users not purchase boards with Via chipsets. I don't pretend to know the exact release of every product, but the Apollo Pro 133A and the KX133 chipsets were out in motherboards long enough for ATI to have adequate testing done with Via-based motherboards. I do know they had some mention of this beforehand, but now I can't seem to find mention of this at all. ATI probably revised the page. Regardless, that's a poor excuse when there is a large amount Via-based motherboards out. Intel users still have a few options to choose from, but AMD options were pretty limited to the 760 boards until ALi came out with the Magik1. It's pretty poor service to just blame the other company. "How can anyone use stability and performance to describe Via?" I'll personally refute that one. I've had 7 motherboards, 4 of which use the Via Apollo Pro 133A or the KT133. I've been running Windows 2000 for nearly a year now on a KT133 board, along with overclocking to add to the stress. Granted, having an Asus board helps, but I leave my computer on unless I'm on vacation, messing with hardware, or don't have power, and I can't say much for crashing, lockups, and other fun stuff happening frequently. It's really bad when you run into people who have a problem with even the thought of using a Via product. I'm not advocating Via in a server environment, but the "Via sucked, does suck, and always will suck" arguements are pretty old, and are a lost cause to argue. Complaints of Via not getting things right the first time are lame. Yeah, Via hasn't been blowing us with the first round, but I'd like to know of any company that has the maximum performance of their products everytime it's released. Heven forbid Intel screws up.

VMware don't do SMP:( Oh, I got me the Audigy X-Gamer. Freakin' awesome and no BSLive! problems.
-
I'd lean toward getting a GeForce. ATI is pathetic in the driver department, and end up killing their products, and why I'm refusing to buy ATI again until they get driver development down pat.
-
Agreed. This is one forum I hit on my free time, but I'm not here all the time. This is a question I could've answered had I seen it, but I know there are those that I, and sometimes nobody else, can't answer. So don't b1tch if we don't address your problem immediately.
-
I'll see if the problems persist, as I've got the Audigy now. The Guillemot Fortissimo I have is different than the Herc Fortissimo II. The DSP is Yamaha, no the Cirrus Logic one. Haven't had problems before. I think using Yamaha's drivers directly off their site may have had something to do with it. Probably should've left the default Win2k drivers there. The drivers available are so old anyway, it's not worth it.

I do put a space between 'em if I can, and with full towers it's easy. You don't have to, but if you've got the room, it doesn't hurt.
