Well, it's the Consumer Reader(s) Service. They claimed to be from Stockton, CA--which does exist. AFAIK, they're not. Checked the BBB, used Yahoo to track them down---and they don't exist. The number they gave me has been disconnected (FYI:1-800-235-0349). I reported them to the anti-fraud site Fraud. I also went to my bank to take action. We destroyed my current debit card and put a stop transfer on for suspiscious transactions. I'm keeping tabs on-line on my account so I can pull out attempts to get the money otherwise ASAP. I have a bank debit card with Visa credentials. I distinctly remember this "offer" for randomly selected users of Visa, Master Card, and Discovery, but I think there were others too. Credit cards and debit cards don't make a difference. They said Visa knew about it, but I found nothing about it on their site.

Apparently the WK BIOS for the VP6 is good. I got mine a few months ago and that's the latest release. I'd be careful about flashing the BIOS on your cards and firmware. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! WK BIOS works fine in XP on my VP6 setup as in the sig. In the past, USB keyboards have caused problems, but I'd check around the forums for a fix. When 2cpu is back up, check there too.

The Guru of 3D has the Detonator destroyer prog you might wanna try.

This is a stupid question, but I'm covering all bases: What drivers are you using with your video card? And did you install them? The XP drivers won't do you justice for gaming.

Ditto. That's the best thing you can do to speed up the most.

Well, it seems that I will *finally* be getting my GF2Pro very soon. The vendor the shop ordered the card from screwed up on shipping it. The vendor kept saying it had been shipped (which it hadn't), and then after realizing the screw up is throwing in some RAM to make up for it. The shop gave them the ultimatum: If it's not in by Friday, refund the money on the card, and we'll order elsewhere. I'm pretty patient, but it's been well over a month since the card was ordered, and this is a ridiculously long time to wait. I don't care what extra's they throw in, because the shop and I just want the card without the BS. I used to go to skool with the shop guy getting me the card, and he's not trying to screw me. If the card isn't in by this Friday, the vendor gets dropped.

Then why upgrade at all unless your new rig is at least twice the speed of the old one? DDR is worthless? I'll argue that one: DDR vs. SDR in video cards, raise the resolution and color depth and watch the DDR cards generally stomp the SDR ones. A video card can do a lot, true, but DDR does help to prolong your system's useful life. So you can't tell the improvement in current games, big deal! It won't hurt for future games now will it. If I was buying a new board now, I'd definitely be looking at DDR ones. Also, if you've got an older system, you may not see any improvement if the system doesn't have enough muscle to make use of that new card.

Just saw a VERY interesting Athlon vs. Pentium III/IV Video
Brian Frank replied to isochar's topic in Hardware
Tom did what I don't have the guts to do, and would become ill if I did. When you have the money, fried CPU's aren't a big deal. As far as the CPU itself, Intel has better heat management and a tougher die--you don't hear horror stories en masse about people cracking their P3. And to make it even more idiot-proof, the IHS on the P4 and Tualatin P3 and Celeron make it nearly impossible to accidentally bust a die. With the P4 retention mechanism, the heatsink isn't coming off accidentally either. -

Okay, that is just plain weird, man! -
Happy Birthday, Inferno!

Hey, freefalle6, you don't need to post the same think all over the forums, capice'! If you didn't get w4ar3z'd XP corp., you don't have to worry about MS comin' to bust you.

Oh, and how loud of a fan can you handle? Them Delta's are loud, if that mp3 clip was any indication. And that whine... I forget what fan does just as good as the delta, but isn't nearly as loud. I want to say Papst, but it might be Sunon. Can't remember where I saw that tid bit.

That's it! The Compatibility lists need to be split up!
Brian Frank replied to DosFreak's topic in Slack Space
Yes. Alphabetical is a biggie. -
The NT-based OS's (NT/2k/XP) are a bit more sensitive to hardware than Win9x. You didn't mention raising the Vcore any under XP--you might wanna give that a shot. Along those same lines, not every CPU overclocks the same.

I could be mistaken, but it appears that the LAN is integrated into the 735 chip, leaving you with 2 options: see if SiS has Linux drivers, or if the open source community comes up with anything--this includes you writing a driver for it.

I thought that the Acer DVD drive was keeling over on me. Turned out it wasn't in my case. Hopefully, that's what it will end up being your problem.

IE6 and Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 don't seem to like each other. Some PDF files are unable to be read and lock IE up. Others work fine, but the problem happens too often to make a strong case for corrupted PDFs. Did the same thing with 4.0.

I have a USB Zip100, one of those redesigned versions. I really don't use it much, since I have a CD-Burner--which doesn't do much more than back up my stuff. Hell, I use my floppy drive more often than I use my Zip drive. Quicken fits on a floppy quite nicely.

I had something similar happen to me. I could put a DVD in my DVD drive--a Toshiba, but if I put in any CD or another DVD, it gave me a BSOD. I could play CD's fine until I put a DVD in, then everything went to hell. This was in Win2k. Ultimately, flashing my motherboard's BIOS to the latest one fixed the problem. I don't know if this will fix your problem, though that was a weird fix for my prob.

That ME sux thread was the biggest flame pot I've ever had with anybody. I know some ppl had problems with jdulmage (sorry to bring him up) but there was one dude with problems (not me:p). ME promised a lot and delivered zilch, providing the opposite effect. There are people who think it sux more than 98, and they aren't geeks.

Yeah, it's not going very well. 2CPU.com's host is going under unfortunately, and they are looking at a new host and some money options. NTCompatible seems to be staying afloat, and I hope it continues.

You will have some performance drops, but it shouldn't be enough to warrant a noticeable difference. I honestly couldn't tell you a difference. My partitioning scheme is an average of 5gigs per partition. That's average, depending on what I'm using each partition for. My game partition is 8-9 gigs, and I have a 1 gig swap partition. It's nice if I need to reinstall Windows. Just format C and swap drive, and then install.

If it supports Palimino, you'll be okay. It also seems like if your board is socket A, you can still run the Pally (MP,XP) minus the extra enhancements, so it wouldn't be better than its predecessor at the same speed, but it would work. A BIOS flash may be needed.
-
You can't. Apparently, it wasn't supposed to get out. So techically, this goes under the w4ar3z category... I'm waiting for this one, but I'd like mine optimized first. Unreal was a good game. I should play it again sometime, when I have the time. ;(

A security measure against viruses??
Brian Frank replied to reversing_drive's topic in Customization & Tweaking
No, I really don't think that does any good. What about the Melissa and Love letter viruses? I hardly think all those affected were logged on as an admin or with admin privelges. Logged on as guest, or a limited user in most cases. Obviously, this didn't do any good. Unless someone can prove that this works. A virus is indifferent to who's logged on. Ever heard of the Fun-Love virus? Nasty, infects anything that touches it, including the virus scanner!!! It doesn't give a crap about who you are, and you're in computer hell regardless.
