*Braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap!* 'scuse me.

Only if they have EDO slots, and if I remember correctly, you'll have to buy your EDO sticks in pairs just like SIMMs.

Quote: Again, my question is will PC100 or PC133 SDRAM DIMM memory work on such a motherboard? Nope. Not at all. Your stuck with EDO, unless you upgrade your rig. You can't use DDR or RDRAM either; EDO only.

Need opinions - Best video card in terms of support for 2k(a

Shoot, skip the MX and look at a Pro. There half the cost of a GF3 and the next step down. I've noticed that with a plain heatsink and no fan the Hercules MX card didn't get insanely hot. I'm still stuck with my temporary GF2MX200 and that just gets hot as hell with a heatsink, but I haven't had lockups in games, so I guess it must be okay. -
Make sure everything is plugged in, and that the ribbon cables are aligned properly. Check and make sure that the IDE channels are enabled and set properly in BIOS. You may want to try resetting the BIOS back to the defaults. I've seen this fix work firsthand, as sometimes a certain BIOS setting gets set incorrectly and causes some weird things to happen.

Which ones? The 14.xx are supposed to work quite well, specifically the 14.70's. Hopefully nvidia will get those 20.80 drivers out, as they seem to give a nice bump in performance for XP users. Your best bet is to hang around the forums and look for people who have your hardware under XP. I would say look at M3Dzone, but the last time I was their the all the nvidia drivers were gone, and that was a lot of leaked ones too. You could try some of the manufacturers drivers, but they might mess things up, so be careful. The Guru of 3D is supposed to have some det drivers too, so I'd check there in your quest. I'm not sure of any sites that have a specific selection of exclusive XP drivers, but I'd imagine that the driver sites will have XP drivers on hand once XP is released offically. M3DZone has more than just vid drivers, but that may or may not help you. Good luck.

32MB? Your kidding, right? Win2k ran, but slowly with 64MB, and getting over 128 helped a great deal. I can't imagine running XP on 64, much less 32. I totally agree with Xiven. Even if you could install XP, it would be so ungodly slow it wouldn't be funny. 256MB is around $50USD, and that's cheap. Best thing you can do to those systems.

I dunno about that. I'm starting to believe the statement "Linux is free only if your time is worthless." I'm going to try out FreeBSD as soon as I get some free time.

Gee I wonder why hardly anybody uses netscape? Sit back and watch the lawsuits come again.

Nope. Don't play Ultima. Bug: I've never heard of a 166MHz Pentium II.

This is a guess: share that file and see if you can password it then. I'm not sure if that will work, but try it. It's something that just popped in my head. ;(

Originally, the A7V came with and without onboard sound. The sound version featured the overclocking dipswitches only in the beginning, but I have the version with no sound but with the dipswitches for overclocking. My board is a genuine Asus A7V, no E or 133. The board revision is 1.02 and it originally came with the 1004 BIOS. After I upgraded to the 1007 BIOS, a BSOD that required a software patch no longer came up. I bought mine in nov of 2000. The first one I had was a dud (had it for a week, same revision), but the one I have now is running smooth as ice, and overclocked. Dunno what yer problems are... I do know asus has a whole line of A7____ boards, several have A7V in them. Mine is the plain A7V, no audio but with the dipswitches. The board says "Asus A7V" as well as the box it came in. I don't know what further proof I need to put forth. Ditto to CRamaglia's comment.

I was going by your sig line, that's why I thought it was ME. If you think yer hdd is the culprit, you may want to check if Western Digital or whatever drive is the problem, has a diagnostic utility. I know Maxtor has one, but it's safe to say you should use it on Maxtor drives. I can't say for certain that WD has a diagnostic tool, but it wouldn't hurt to look on that floppy disk that came with the drive or look on their site.

In some cases, yes, but I've seen more than a few equipped with the TNT2's. The biggest bang for the buck is probably a card with a GF2Pro. @ $150 you can't go wrong. Look at newegg.com

Tell yer friend to set BIOS back to the defaults and make sure he's got it upto 1007. I've been running Win2k on my A7V for about 10months and I've had no problems installing it ever.

Format your ME partition and leave it out.
-
Duh. Those lucky enough to not get crap from ME are far and few between. I had some cocks_cker flame me because I though ME sucked (which to date still does). ME promised and did not deliver. Thank god they're getting XP out soon.

Got DMA enabled in Windows and BIOS?

I agree. I have seen someone mention dual booting and sharing the same partition, however it's been a while since I saw that (sing along now) You don't have to do a reformat, but you do need to divvy up your hard drive for a second partition. In the MMC go to Disk Management and you can resize your disks and format appropriately. Install 98 on the new partition (FAT32 only) and let it fully complete the install. Afterwords, boot off the Win2k CD, and run the repair option. If you have the ERD made, just type fixboot in the revcovery console, otherwise choose the fast repair option and you'll have your dual boot set.

Well I'm with DosFreak and BladeRunner on this one. XP is just a minor upgrade over 2k, and really not worth the $200-300. If I can get them at a discount price, I'll probably warm up to it a little more, but XP doesn't offer anything I don't already have. I do think it's better for home users, but I personally find more annoyances than anything else. There's just more crap I don't want that I have to turn off. I don't like MSN Messenger, the new 'look' the control panel default view, the autoplay feature in general, dropped NetBEUI support offically, Product Activation, the annoying guides that get in my way, the contination of personalized menus, no choice of much of the installed stuff like movie maker--which is easily beaten down by any store bought software... It's good for newbies, but it's just a pain in the neck for me personally. All the games I want to play run on Win2k. I feel that MS has gone after the newbies and abandoned the vets.

The only nVidia based cards that support 2 monitors is the GF2MX's. No GTS, Pro's, or Ultra's, nor the GF3. Check newegg.com for this stuff. GF2 Pro will run you around $150 with the shipping saver option.

All I can say is stay away from Memorex CD drives. I've seen soooo many, nearly all that I've seen installed in systems have crapped out within a year of installation.

It's the coppermine core, 4th revision of the die. If you're going dual, save yerself a whole hell in itself and just buy two new ones. As for overclockability, the cD0's will probably be better then cB0's. However, it depends on which CPU you have, some OC better than others.
