NTFS is more secure, so if that's a concern, NTFS is the only way to go. I've tried both methods and I can't tell a difference. NTFS slows things down very little, but not enough that you can tell at all. FAT32 is fine too. For home usage, NTFS is unnecessary, but businesses or places requiring security, NTFS is a must.

Well, does the BSOD list any file as the culprit?

Any good free DVD Players out there for Win2K
Brian Frank replied to reversing_drive's topic in Software
No. But you can obtain one and crack it. I do have legal copies of WinDVD, including an OEM version. Look at computer shows and you should be able to find the software for $20. I don't like WinDVD as much as PowerDVD, but I've never had problems getting WinDVD to run. -
3 finger salute!!! WTF?!! I've always used the "1" Finger salute. Oops. ;( Sorry, counldn't control myself.

I've got the Divx codec and code red patch on my rig I using right now, I haven't had that problem. I may have had some problems related to it, but I can't prove it. Don't have a solution tho.

The only question is if ppl will bite. A lot of SBLive! users got burned by Creative's doggedly slow support, and we can both say we've seen quite a few ppl here dump their SBLive! for another card. I think Creative is going to have to pump out good driver support for a while to win ppl back. Poor support is a good way to kill your rep.

Walk around, prentend to inspect things, take longer break...I ususally have to bust my butt so I can go home when my shift is done. I work as a custodian at a school, so I can't just screw around much during the skool yr. or I can't go home.

Go to M3DZone for drivers and look under Nvidia. I've seen the 14.10's work. Also, eddie has said that the 8.0x are pretty impressive there too. I haven't checked them out, but they're apparently pretty good.

That's because ATI doesn't know how to write good drivers for Win2k. Unfortunately, ATI kills their cards with their awful drivers. Heh, me have Nvidia. Hell, 3dfx provided better drivers than ATI does, which makes me wonder why ATI is still in business.

True about AMD getting better about the heat, although I'd still take Intel over AMD for now, as Intel has been implementing it for a few years now.

Yeah, make sure you're viewing all hidden files. BTW, it works in 2k, not that it's relevant...

Still (I did think of that later on...) Specs please, especially the graphics card... It was late at nite, and I've see several posts wanting help lately, but then they don't list pertenent info (BSOD messages, specs, etc.) And it's my pet peeve on-line... ;(

Quote: And XP has great support for ATI cards. ATI has been working with Microsoft to make sure that they have optimized drivers by the time XP ships. They have stated that XP will ship with the best RADEON driver to date. And with the performance I was getting from their latest beta drivers in Windows 2000, I'm psyched. Wow! *sarcasm* ATI is gonna put out good drivers?! Holy cow! Stop the presses. ;(*snicker* Sorry, I've had very bad experiences with ATI and driver support.

I've got the VP6, and I'm wondering about the 4-way interleave in BIOS. The thing is I only have 3 DIMM's used--all 128MB PC133--and the 4th DIMM empty. Right now it's set to auto, but I'd like to know if setting it to 4-way would help me with only 3 DIMMs, not do anything or cause problems. Specs on sig line.

Ahhh. *smack* Oh, yeah, banks! Not slots, duh. Okay, might as well try it out here. I wasn't sure, as I haven't had this memory option before, and had seen something on it...just never had it before. Thanx for the info.

But dang! It's not here in town. Oh well, I'm probably the only on the forum with the original Guillemot Maxi Sound Fortissimo. But I do want something better than the SB16 in my other rig...

Yes, but should there be 300MHz speed gap between the Athlon and P4? By all means, the P4 should be stomping the Athlon at every point, but it doesn't. All the sandra scores are synthetic too, so it's not real world performance. You may not need to get a different case. the Asus P4T apparently has some setup that you can mount on the backside of the board, and leave you one less item to buy. I'd rather have dual P3's than a P4 right now. Once socket 478 gets in full swing, we should see some killer P4's. The only S478 is the Abit TH7-II, at least to my knowledge, but it still uses that RDRAM. I don't know about you, but I really don't care what's powering my box, so long as it's fast, and doesn't require taking out a home mortgage. I would however go with intel for server's and laptops over amd, as intel has been doing that stuff with their power chips a bit longer than AMD. Even the Duron run's hotter than a P3 of the same clock speed. This is what I personally would say AMD's achilles heel is, heat. The irony here is that they are better overclockers in my experience, yet that causes them to produce even more heat, which is bad. I hope my incessant babbling has clued you guys in some more.

What game are you trying to run? What are your specs? I have no freakin' clue what you're havin' trouble with, and there fore, I nor anyone else can help you. This is my little pet peeve, and it's 2 AM.

[size:24]Now I will go psycho....[/color] 8)NO!!! NOT ME!!! Arrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!!!! 8) 8) 8) 8) ME is crap, 98 is better. Contrary to belief, Win2k can run games rather well, and most games do run on 2k. ME promised and didn't deliver, it's primary function ended up being to screw up your computer. ME is evil! EEEEEEvil!!!

Matrox G450 is a good bet for dual head, and I haven't heard about a refresh rate cap at 60Hz. Not sure about the gaming tho. Look at GF2MX TwinView cards too, I know Leadtek has one out, but beyond that...I don't know. I'm not sure how well your buddy wants his gaming to be, but if his expectations aren't too high, the G450 may pass the test for him.

You may have to log on as administrator, and not just assign administrative purposes to an account. I've seen that as a fix for one older game here.

Well, if creative will support it instead of putting out half assed drivers, I think it might fly. But creative has pissed off quite a few customers with the poor Win2k support.
-
Yes, the Win2k drivers were good as far as I can tell. There weren't a zillion of them, but I never had a problem running the drivers.

How 'bout Acute Technical Ignorance ? -
I agree with DosFreak. It's not nvidia's or MS fault. Nvidia has the technology rights, but that does not mean that they have to support it. It would be nice, as I've seen my Voodoo 3 3000 AGP run extremely well in Beta 2 of XP, but there's nothing that can be done. 3dfx had some good ideas but the competition blew it out of the water. In some benchmarks the GF2MX was equal to or on top of the V5. Let's see here, which one would you get? Yes, no 3dfx support in XP sux, but that's life. I liked 3dfx, but I don't see the point of using there cards when I won't have future support any more. It is not nvidia's responsability to clean up after 3dfx if they don't want to. 3dfx screwed themselves over by being late. I still remember when the V3 was arguably the best card out there. Now Nvidia is the best because they have good products and good support. There's a thing called competition, and that's what happened here. If that's what is considered a monopoly, you should start alerting officials to start a bunch of lawsuits against everyone.
