Good to see Monty Python fans "1,2,5" "3, sir." "3" "We have found a witch. May we burn her?"

Radeon 8500, ATi flexes some muscle

Yeah, the Radeon didn't impress me too much under Win2k. Too expensive for the performance I got from it, and the whole driver thing was a killer. The price war between Intel and AMD was a good thing for consumers, and one between ATI and Nvidia can't hurt anything--if it happens.

    Need help with computer problem

You actually use tech support?! If I have a problem, I just come here or hit 2cpu.com's forums up--under a different alias tho. Asus support is pretty lame, I have to agree, especially considering part of the cost is having the name Asus on your computer. Haven't really tried Abit's tech support, but I shouldn't need to. It's funny, the best tech support you never use, but all the bad companies offer bad support and you can never get anything from them--FIC is a big offender. I didn't like the BE6, but my VP6 rocks! I don't think I'll be using Abit's tech support, and if I need help, there's two sites dedicated to the thing. Well, at least your problem is solved!

Quote: The subscription idea is bad in some ways because: 1. Software is buggy and always will be. 2. Control will be lost. 3. MS patches do break things...the service WILL go down. 4. Paying money for crap. Why? I agree, subscription is a bad idea for software. Not everything has to be a service. I don't know about you, but I certainly like to buy software and be done with it. I don't like having strings attached here. All what DosFreak said, too. It should be optional, or at least tested with ppl to see if it will sell. MS should NOT be telling the consumer what they will do and how they will do it. On DosFreak's 3rd point: I've not ever used NT, but I heard that SP6 had some nasty flaw in it, even though MS quickly released SP6a. I didn't find out what that nasty flaw was, but sh.it happens in the line of work. We're all human, and on the first point, there will be some flaw, even if we don't notice it.

Windows XP delay? Gotta love it!

I know that, I haven't done my research on where to obtain it, which I'll do when I need it. ;( Other than my personal issues with XP, it's fine as far as I can tell.

Radeon 8500, ATi flexes some muscle

Looks very good. The only catch here is that ATI hasn't had the most impressive drivers IMHO. Hopefully, they will have it down real quick, because they will need it to compete with the GF3. I hope it does succeed, as competition is always a good thing.

NTLDR missing is one of the things that really gets me pulling my hair out.

    WinMe only half shuts down?

The answer is because ME is a half-a$$ed OS that MS just released to go through the product cycle.

Am I the only one who thinks Win ME sucks?

I know that waaaaaaaaaay too well, eddie. I'm glad I'm able to see what the next Windows will be like, and it's safe to assume it won't suck. Unless the lawsuits from the have not's start after MS again. MS should be smacked for releasing ME in the first place. Getting XP out so soon after was a good idea, but they should've just skipped ME and waited for XP. However, had that not happened, I probably would still be using 98, not Win2k or RC1.

    Chkdsk?

I've just had it screw up my registry so bad it was time to reinstall the OS. And this has happened every time I used it. The only Norton stuff I use are Norton Internet Security and AntiVirus.

    NVidia Detonator Driver Discussion

Looks like it's mostly a big boost for the lucky dogs with the GF3's, but I'll still be able to grab them shortly after I get my GF2Pro:D

Sir, not to be rude, but if you read the article, you'd have know they won't be released till later this week.

Did you figure that out before taking out the Netgear NIC?

Windows XP delay? Gotta love it!

I agree. Of course, the only issue I'm running into is that I won't have the dough to buy XP Pro, which I'll need at least one copy of to make use of my duallie rig. I'm sure I'll get XP Pro on both my rigs, but there is the whole networking issue with NetBEUI--which the unsupported driver for it on the RC1 disk works okay, but I still need to work with it a little. Not sure if it's poorly written or what, but it doesn't like to play nice with all the machines. And yes, I wouldn't be using NetBEUI, but I am not the LAN god at home, so I have to go with what settings I'm told to have, otherwise this wouldn't be such an issue. Even if I don't go to XP, Win2k is still a good OS.

    Partitions, Need Urgent Help!

I don't know about that one...I've had problems with the individual utilities from Norton Utilities screwing up stuff like my registry. NDD isn't an offender, but I'd still tread carefully. I'd check out clutch's solution first, but I am speaking from a biased perspective on the NU suite.

Am I the only one who thinks Win ME sucks?

Hopefully XP won't get gutted before we see it, but it may be released early to avoid the next round of lawsuits. Good thing I didn't ask early on how many ppl think XP sux;) Boy would I be dead meat!

    Via readies Pentium 4 chipset

I know Via has plenty of enemies, but Intel doesn't need to be one of them. If Via's P4 chipset is crap, why did Intel have a cow at Computex, lest we forget that incedent. Is Intel scared of Via here, or do they not want anyone to have a platform that is better than what they have? I'll readily admit, I like Via and haven't had problems with their chipsets, although I am fully aware that quite a few of you out there do. If Via's P4 chipset has no merit, why is Intel so uptight about it? Intel has produced solid chipsets in the past, even when the requirements were undesirable.

    nVidia Detonator 4 Drivers Preview

Hey, I'm all for every last ounce of power I can suck out of nvidia's cards before overclocking, but boy, them there detonator's are getting pretty high in the numbers. Wonder what the 100.xx dets will do...

Windows XP delay? Gotta love it!

I agree with both of you. Clinton got the credit for something Regan did. Now ppl are blaming Bush for the economic troubles, which were caused by Slick Willy. I don't agree or like everything MS does, but I do agree with you clutch, today's society is a "if you can't beat 'em, sue 'em." Pathetic. XP does look good, but if they have to change stuff, there's no harm in waiting until a service pack comes out to undo the damage.

    Chkdsk?

    8) 8)Norton Utilities will F-up your system faster than the FBI can lose a computer. Trust me, here, my system went downhill in 2 days. It screws up your registry, and if you don't have some way to recover it, you are looking at a nice reinstall.:(Get that crap off your system ASAP! 8) The only components worth it on NU are the antivirus and defragger. There are more than a few people here that will vouch for the problems this program causes. Don't say you weren't warned. Get rid of that now, or suffer it's consequences.

    Win2K & Original Gateway Pentium 200Mhz

Those internet appliances are such a waste! You can get some cheap Emachines which have more features and wouldn't cost that much. Man, I hate to think how much the government blows on items that aren't worth the money...of course, it's even worse when they lose them. iPaq...your right, no one's going to use that for work. I personally don't see that category of pseudo-pc's as anything useful for the price.

Anak1, looking at your sig line almost made me think it was mine, as I got a VP6 and the 800EB's myself. College student here myself, and I'll be dammed if I have to buy a copy of XP Pro, even the upgrade's to XP Pro are $200, for both my machines. Plus, MS seems to be biting the hand that feeds. They are nothing without customers, and if you piss off enough customers, you are in deep shhhhhhhh... I'm sorry, but we use NetBEUI here at home, and I keep hearing to change it, but I am not in control of the network settings. My dad is, and I can't go without NetBEUI for now. I also don't care to have to reactivate after I've reached a quota for hardware upgrades, especially since I would buy my copy of XP from the store. Basically, XP is great except for those two issues. NetBEUI included on the RC1 cd is okay, but not great. I will buy my copy and crack it, just to prove it is do-able. It's been done so far, and MS is stupid to not realize this. XP is great, no doubt, but I feel that MS doesn't trust us alone with a computer. Fine, two can play hardball on this.
