Update: I'm trying a new PSU, and if that doesn't fix it, I'm getting the Asus CUV4X-D or the Abit VP6. Please, tech gods, let it be the PSU!!!

Ahh, I'd love to, but the only problem is the networking. My dad wants NetBEUI for networking, so I have to go with the flow. Right now, I've got RC1 running fine, and have yanked out both NICs and the stick of PNY RAM, and my SB16PCI OEM. Win2k is installing wonderfully. Also took the hdd off the Promise controller and things run fine now, but I don't see why that's the problem. I think it's having the two NICs that screwing things up. Well, thanx for the replies ppl's. Gotta jump back to the duallie and see what hardware is screwing it up. I really think it has something to do with the two NICs, cuz the 2nd one was the last piece of hardware I put in before things went sour.

No. Get a different video card. You can get a GF2MX/MX400/200 based card for as cheap as $70--at least around town, and probably cheaper online. I'm telling you, ATI sucks with their drivers and it's killing their video cards. Another good contender is the Kyro II--it's cheap and kicks the GF2MX's arse. Bottom line: ditch that ATI, as ATI's Win2k drivers have left me wondering on how much power they're capping their cards with. My Voodoo 3 ran better in Win2k and Beta 2 of XP than my friends Radeon does under 98--and 3dfx ain't with us!

Well, it's definitely something in Win2k. Im dual booting between Win2k and XP RC1, and XP works damn fine. Oh hell, I'm just gonna format the Win2k partition and start over...it's only my test rig anyway. Can't sleep, Bill Gates will assimilate me! Can't sleep, Bill Gates will assimilate me! Can't sleep, Bill Gates will assimilate me! Can't sleep, Bill Gates will assimilate me!....

Which nVidia card? Which drivers are u using? I just installed RC1 and UT kicks arse with a GF2MX and 12.41 Detonator drivers. I'm havin' problems with HL tho... I'd check yur drivers and settings in the game, cuz a few of them don't do well for nVidia cards.

The new Windows version.....necessary or just more bloatware
Brian Frank replied to PsychoSword's topic in Software
Apparently the later versions of XP haven't gotten 3dfx card drivers from nVidia--which does make sense, but I don't like it. However, I decided to go a head with RC1 and picked up a GF2MX200 which really rocks under XP! Much better since Beta 2. Wierd thing is, XP RC1--not fully released--is running smoothly on my duallie, but I'm having hell with Win2k for some reason. At least that eliminates some probable causes... Ah well, I got on frickin' OS running right now... I can feel my arguments against XP going away. Not totally sure I'll pick up XP, but I'll at least consider it in a dual boot. System's hefty enough... -
Will ATA 133 be much faster than ATA 66 or ATA 100? What doe
Brian Frank replied to imtim83's topic in Hardware
Well, the spindle speed will have a lot to do with that as the normal data throughput is around 40MB/s even though they can hit 100MB/s. Also, the thing is that the IDE controllers are on the PCI bus which is limited to 133MB/s. I can assure you it will not be using all that bandwith up or there's going to be problems unless they bump up the PCI bus bandwith. There probably won't be that much performance increase either, unless the spindle speed is increased along with it. -
Something is certainly up now. I am having hell whenever I use graphics related programs, basically my games...so I've got more work to do...

I cracked on my XP animosity. I am installing RC1 on my duallie rig, and have a dual boot with Win2k as a backup. I'll let ya know how my GF2MX200 scores. It's just a generic one by eVGA with 6ns ram, so I'm not holding my hopes too high. Not ditching Win2k yet, but I'm trying XP again with the new release. Haven't done anything since Beta2 and my Voodoo3 (had to pull it out for XP )

Of course, certain manufactures *cough* *ATI* *cough**cough* 'scuse me, that produce poor drivers will screw your system regardless of how good the OS is. I suppose I'm reluctant to upgrade because 1.) it feels like MS is launching a new OS right on the heels of ME--despite the fact that ME was a flop. 2.) Speaking of ME, as mentioned previously, my experience with that was less than impressive. 3.) I still have a perfectly good Voodoo 3 3000 AGP that I'd like to keep around a bit longer (that and I've got other things I need to spend money on). Plus, the fact that at home we use NetBEUI, and the unoffical way to install it onto XP was a flop. I'd do it differently, but I am not the master of the network, and I can't change things without putting my neck out on the chopping block. I'm not as hostile toward XP as I was a few months ago, but I personally don't have a real need to ditch Win2k yet. I said the same thing about 98 before I tried ME. I still have the beta's and RC 1 and 2 to install on my test system. -
Gemfire James: in your former incarnation here, you had pissed off a few people, and left a bad taste in many mouths. I think the ol' trust factor is going to come and bite you here. Nothing personal, but the consensus is wary of you with your past, and you will have to earn the trust and dignity here. Not trying to get a flame going here, but you screwed yourself, man.

If you have Win2k installed already, install the drivers before putting in the card. Install drivers, reboot, shutdown, insert card, connect drive, boot up. Drivers first...card second. Do it just like above and things should work fine.

I'd bet so, it's not like NTCompatible is teeming with virtual Hell's Angels-type nerds and geeks.

The new Windows version.....necessary or just more bloatware

Heh. Even if you do know it all, you have to learn wherever MS put it so you can use it. Man, I hate that. Plus, with people going after MS (again! ;( )there's talk of XP getting released early or late, both of which will impact XP. I think the quest for the perfect OS is in vain--not to say their shouldn't be improvements to an OS--but c'mon, we're human (most of us anyway;)) and humans make mistakes. No doubt, MS doesn't hire any joe off the street, at least I'd hope not, but still nobody's perfect so that right there is a problem. 2nd, you can't please everyone. XP seems targeted too much at newbies, and less at PC vets like quite a few of us here. Granted there will still be new things to learn, but XP, at least IMO, seems to alienate the vets in favor of newbies. I really don't like XP all that well, and am still reeling from my unfriendly encounter with ME. Win2k does everything I need it to, and has some life left in it. Also, I feel XP just seems rushed. I know ME was a piece of crap, but still it's only been a year since the last MS OS release... Plus, XP will still have problems unaddressed in the final product. I can't say what they'll be, but there is the assurance that something will be wrong. Not everyone will know about it or experience it, but there will be problems. There may be less, but with ME, that was a mixed bag: some people had no problems with it, but others had hell from it. Show me the perfect OS, and I'll show you the biggest liar. -

Yeah, I like Linux, but I don't see it as a viable option at this present time. I also don't see BeOS coming out and slugging down Windows. I tried BeOS out, and I really didn't like it. I will stick to Win2k, thank you very much. -
Linux is here to stay I believe, but I don't think it will necessarily be dominating the desktop anytime soon. I have used Linux enough to know that anybody who thinks it's going to take over the desktop market, especially on the home front, is crazy. Many people see the computer on the same level as a TV or toaster, and they just want to turn it on an do what they want. Windows, while it does have problem--like any OS, is much easier to use than Linux. While I personally don't like or want XP, I certainly see why it would be appealing to more than just a few computer users. I don't think Windows is going down any time soon. Linux has potential, but it also needs some work before I really would consider it for home use.

Happy Birthday, Phillip. "For he's a jolly good fellow..."

8)In 32-bit? 8) On a GF2MX, 32-bit is going to only be good up until 800x600, and that's really the limit. I'd say he's doing pretty good. I've found the fastest dets., at least under Win2k, are the 10.80's. That Celeron 533 is probably hurting him too, and is probably the biggest issue of speed here. I find that pretty hard to believe myself of 800x600x32. 16-bit, I'll bite, but 85fps at 32-bit on any MX? I don't think so. That's Radeon and Kyro II territory. Your friend either doesn't know what he's talking about, or is smoking something... The MX's aren't crappy, but he seems to think they can deliver more than what they really can without overclocking.

PC Speaker beeps everytime I empty my recycle bin
Brian Frank replied to stpatrick44's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Two ways: under volume controls, make sure you see PC speaker with the box checked. Or, in Device Manager, disable System speaker. You also could unplug the speaker from the motherboard if you're really desparate. -
I got Win2k at home and grabbed that patch ASAP. I guess it's nowhere near as bad as for a server--which I have no clue how bad it must be for you guys. Whew! Disaster avoided...for now. ;(

Four-and-Twenty: ouch! Heh. Me have RC1 &2 but haven't tried them out yet. I've got too many classes and work to try to fiddle with XP right now. Hey, at least you got a nvidia card under XP, I gotta deal with my Voodoo 3 under it--which kicked arse in Beta 2!!!! You know the GF2MX's are pretty cheap, so you could jump to that and leave the TNT as a backup card for emergencies, which is probably what will happen to the V3 once I find something really cheap. Oh, someone mentioned earlier about Win2k drivers for nvidia cards: still using 10.80's. Haven't seen anyones faster and got tired of trying new dets out to find the fastest.

Did you try the AppCompat utility? It's on the Win2k CD, but there are updates on SP1 and 2.
