    Where it NetBeui at?!?!

I'd tried that, but it didn't work on XP. MS should re-evaluate NetBUEI, but I think they want it out so they can spy on us.

    PCI latency?

Hmm...I only get that thing about PCI latency with my duallie rig, not my A7V though, and both are Via chipsets. The SiS735 and the nForce 420 are good options, and the nForce 220 might be okay, but the first two should be good once they hit the market. I would wait for reviews of the nForce first, but the preliminary results for the Sis735 kick arse, in some cases beating the AMD760!!! Fortunately, I don't think these solutions will be utilizing an ISA slot. ISA is toast now, but if it takes this long to kill off a standard, we're going to see a long and slow death for a ton of stuff.

    crash

Yeah, 64 is really slooow. Plus ram is so cheap anyway. BTW FYI, PC100 and PC133 SDRAM will work with that Celeron.

    crash

Do you know the exact motherboard you have? I know the SoundBlaster Live! cards have caused issues with motherboards using a Via chipset, so if you could post what the motherboard is and/or the chipset on it, that would help a lot. In Device Manger, look under the System Devices list. It will list devices on the motherboard like CPU to AGP controller, and will list the manufacturer of the chipset most likely. It should list several devices made by Intel, Via, ALi, or SiS. A couple of things I also thought of: Did you purchase your computer at a store, like a Compaq, Hewlett Packard, E-Machines, etc.? The second thing is another way to find out your motherboard, but you will have to open the case to find out. On the motherboard between the PCI and/or ISA slots many manufacturers list their name and the motherboard model. If you don't see that or want a second reference, look for the two largest chips on the motherboard. One may have a heatsink on it, but the second one won't. The one with the heatsink will be closest to the CPU slot or socket, but if it doesn't look for the largest chip closest to the cpu if its not covered up. The manufacturer of the chipset--not the motherboard--will be printed on that chip and the other large chip which should be on the bottom half of the motherboard around the PCI or ISA slots. Again you should see Via, Intel, ALi, or SiS on the chip. Also, there should be numbers on the chips to give information, which we can track down. The TNT2 works better with older drivers, namely the 7.52, if I remember correctly, try using those instead of the latest. Next time you're unsure of where to post, pick one place so we don't get confused. Thanx.

    crash

When it crashes, what happens exactly? Lock-ups? Blue Screen of Death? Which programs are crashing? What error messages are listed? What is your entire configuration of your system? Motherboard, video, sound, chipset, drivers? There's quite a bit that could be wrong, but I can't rightly say what it is without more info. And yes, don't double post. It's harder to remember which post you responded to, and screws us up.

    Choppy games

ATI is killing themselves with their drivers under 2k, but their drivers aren't much better in Win9x either. Pick a GeForce any GeForce. Hell, a Voodoo 4 4500 performed just as well as a Radeon on my box, and I wasn't going to pay $200 for something that wasn't going to up my performance that little. I got me a Hercules GeForce 2 MX 32MB AGP and it kick @ss! Only $100, but you should be able to find a GF2MX for less online. Until ATI gets their drivers right, I will not get their cards or encourage anyone else to do so either.

It is very lame for an addon. If you already have Opposing Force, there is really no reason to get BS. There is absolutely NOTHING new as far as weapons and enemies; you don't even get really difficult puzzles or a badazz end boss. The only good things are you get to play as the Barney cop, and the high-definitions pack. Other than that, don't buy it if you have OpFor.

    Nividia nForce... will you buy??

Read my reply to Tim earlier in post...

Reformatting soon; switch to NTFS or keep FAT32?

NTFS is only a problem if you're doing a dual boot, since to my knowledge, WinNT/2k/XP are the only OS's that can read NTFS without a program to do so. This will not and does not affect things accross a network. And about NetBEUI, right here at home there are 5 computers all running Win2k with NetBEUI working just fine. MS had to take it out of XP, and therefore screw up everything.
  10. Okay, I finally saw it. Animation is top notch, and sometimes I forgot it was animated and thought it was real life because of how well the characters were done. Movements were on top, which is the best computer generated animation--or animation period--I've ever seen. If nothing else, it should be seen for just the animation. I have a new video I want to add to my collection...

    Nividia nForce... will you buy??

Yeah, a lan box would be a good use for it, since both of my rigs have a full-tower, which I don't really want to lug around. Of course, I'd like to see how it turns out first. I personally think it's cool, as you can all probably tell from my other posts, but then again, the 820 chipset looked cool before we saw what it really was. If I do rig it up, I'm gonna stock up on enough DDR, 384 megs ought to be plenty--I seriously doubt you'll be sharing all that. Ooooh, Swiftech--nice an cool, and loud. You getting (or got) the Thunder K7 or are you waiting for more options?

    Voodoo3 not a NT compatible?

    Voodoo 5 drivers on a Voodoo 3?

Best det drivers as of today?

I've been happily using the 10.80's in Win2k because they seem to be the fastest I've used. I stopped switching drivers after the 12.20's because my speed started dropping on my GF2MX.

    Nividia nForce... will you buy??

I haven't heard how they perform yet, mainly because--to my knowledge--there aren't any nForce boards out, so I'm just putting up what I've read at Tom's Hardware and Anandtech, and some from [H]ardOCP. Intel didn't bite on nForce because they said it was unproven. True, but it's basically what's powering the X-Box and is running a PENTIUM III chip. It looks like another mistake for Intel, which could cost them. It will only support AMD chips as of right now, and that includes the Duron. Asus has an nForce board in the works I've read, and I'll assume Abit will too.

I really don't know about Windows file protection being an issue, as that's more for the critical Windows files that shouldn't be displaced.

    A+ Certification...

I'm wondering about the A+ Certification as to how helpful it really is. So far, I've only talked to one computer tech, and he basically said that the course goes over older technology--like 486 stuff--and is more for show than anything else. As for certifications in computers, how much does it really help your employment? I know it's not on the same level as the MSCE, but it seems that it is important nontheless.

    Nividia nForce... will you buy??

Not totally sure, but maybe $10-20 more than comparable motherboards, but that would be a good trade off considering you only need two more items to add to get the system fully functional. Oh, yeah, there are two versions of the nForce: 220 and 420, with the 420 having all the goodies and a wider memory path. Basically, the nForce seems to be the X-Box chipset adapted for the PC. Sooo, logically, if the X-Box has issues, the nForce probably will too.

    Need This File

    8) 8)Your using Norton Utilities!!!!! 8) 8)AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a cursed program! The only parts worthwhile are Speed Disk and Norton Antivirus. WinDoctor screws stuff up, Crash Guard causes crashes, and eventually your system is down the tubes. I would seriously not run NU because it always ****s up your system.

    Netgear = CRAP!!!!!

Got a D-Link in one rig and a Linksys in the other. The other 3 rigs use Realtek 8029-based cards and we got D-Link Gateway and hub. And this is at home too with DSL:D I live in my parents basement and am a social leech:D

Got the latest update for HL? and SP 2 installed? It's probably just me, but I'm not too clear on what has the latest updates. It's rather perplexing that HL doesn't run, because that system looks okay. You don't need to install it through the Application Compatibility program if you have been. Actually, I'm not too clear on what's happening with HL? Does it even launch into HL and crap out when you try to run a game, or does it not even start altogether? Are you getting error messages? Did you do a clean install or upgrade? Which drivers are you using? What's your entire specs?

New 2 HDD acting wierd.. Please help

Set ur hard drives as masters on separate channels on the Promise ATA100 controllers and go back to the 1007 BIOS unless you really need the RAID function. Set your CD-ROM as master on the primary IDE channel on the chipset controller--the ones infront of the ram slots. I have two maxtors, and I leave them on their separate channels. Also, don't play with cable select, just do master and slave settings for the maxtors. Western Digital has their own set up, but that doesn't apply too well to maxtor or vise versa.

    AMD Win2k Patch

Yeah, I figured out not to mess with the BIOS as much as possible. Hmm. The Voodoo 3 might be better off if you get the latest drivers for it. Unfortunately, while it is a solid card, a lot of games seem too much for it I've noticed. About the only thing you can do is overclock it for a little extra performance, but that's it. I reset the BIOS back to it's original settings, and changed very few things from then on.

    Nividia nForce... will you buy??

Hehe. System builders are gonna looooove nForce a lot. Plus, in comparison with the current crop of integrated audio and video, it won't suck (as much) as current solutions.

    Action figure addictions....

Rock on. Anime iz the best. I've got 3 X-men figures sitting on my desk and several more figures from various lines sitting around my room. I got other things to buy now, so I can't afford to get much, but I have considered a few FF movie figures. Before I was a computer geek, I was a comic book geek--well I still am sorta.
