ATI Radeon 9800 (R350) - Thoughts and opinions?
Brian Frank replied to Mr.Guvernment's topic in Slack Space
When the price drops enough, I may look at a 97/9500 Pro card from Hercules or Tyan since I like the blue PCB they use. -

My KVM switch came in, and it just rules. Not the most high-end, but a 4-port model for 60 bucks with 4 KVM cables was a great deal!. -
I've been using Abit's original nForce 1 board for almost a year now and it's been solid as a rock---and completely changed my mind about Abit. If I wanted to get a new mobo, I'd probably be looking at their NF7-S or possibly MSI's. Chaintech's Zenith looks pretty sweet, but that's about the priciest one out there. I've heard alot of good things about the Asus boards though. The bad news is, Asus tends to run you a bit more than the competition for a similar product.

I got the Antec-style cases with a precut side window in it today. I plan to get a 4-port KVM switch here shortly as well. -
It's a neat concept, but I'd much rather have something to read instead. It takes less time to go through a written review than a video one. 60MB files are pretty big for a review of something. Unless you have a T1 line or something, it's not always feesible. It may become bigger when more people have a fast enough connection (which isn't ever fast enough)

SECURITY FLAWS in NIC drivers by tons of name brand vendors
Brian Frank replied to Brian Frank's topic in Security
Hopefully the next time a new networking protocol comes out, they'll make sure to fix this issue. Or the next time they update TCP/IP and the like (if they can get that going) -
I think it runs about $50-60 here in the US.

I've had the previous 2 Fortissimo cards, and they were very good. I'm not surprised that the latest incarnation is a good product.

"DareDevil" with Ben Affleck: You plan to go?
Brian Frank replied to sapiens74's topic in Slack Space
Saw it, thought it sucked. Why? Too much was being crammed in in too little time. Some of the characters that were in the comic I can't recall their names being said in the movie. Unless you knew the actor/actress playing some of the DD characters (Karen Page, Foggy Nelson), you didn't even know who they were during the end credits. Colin Farrell had to be the highlight of the film as Bullseye. Jennifer Garner is pretty hot, but that and the talents of the actors and actresses were horribly wasted on this film. IMO, Spider-Man and X-Men were much better comic book films. I think the comic book movie that's worse than DD is Batman and Robin. -
I'd like to see an actual PCB instead of the paperware version. [H] got ahold of nVidia and it doesn't look like they knew anything about it. I'd love to see an SMP nForce product, but I'm a bit skeptical of this.

Started off great, but it was disappointing at the end. Lots of different enemies, but a number of them do not show up in more than one level. The Skarrj are supposedly the main enemy, but they don't show up very much. I may play it again, but the first time through I couldn't find a way to kill the cutscenes---which is nice if you happen to play it through again. And, uhhh, where's the end boss. You had some sort of boss in earlier levels (that were actually good), but what about the end. Also, some of those missions were too short. For 3.0GB of space I gave up, the game itself is a major disappointment. I'm a big unreal fan, but the sequal isn't anywhere nearly as good as the original.

Problems schedualing Kazza with Task Schedualer
Brian Frank replied to Brian Frank's topic in Software
Never heard of the latter. I have used Kazaa lite (actually presently using it), and it works great. It's the Kazaa program with adware/spyware removed. -
Chaintech is certainly getting popular lately. I imagine I'll try them out sometime soon.

If I had the money, I'd get that Gigabyte Granite Bay board. That thing is so sweet. Not to mention loaded. However, the price is a bit more than I'm willing to pay for a P4 board. I am looking at the GA 8PE667 Ultra---I am trying to get a definite yes on something about it though: Does the Promise ATA133 RAID controller support the use of drives in a non-RAID configuration---like being used like an extra IDE controller? I've tried d/lding the manual, but it's gotten corrupted both times. This board looks good, but, I need to know about that Promise RAID controller.

ECS K7S5A, onoly one drive per IDE channel!?!? WTF!?!
Brian Frank replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Hardware
ECS=Crap. That's why you pay good money for other brands. -
I was inquiring over at another message board about if MS has another file system in place to replace NTFS with sometime in the future. I heard that this might be in Longhorn and Blackcomb. I figured I should hit this place up to find out if that was the case or not or if it's not a sure thing. Or should I be signing up for the beta testing?

New File System for Longhorn/Blackcomb?
Brian Frank replied to Brian Frank's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Ahh, you said the one based on MS SQL server, and now I remember hearing about that awhile back. I think Yamhill was supposed to be Intel's move against AMD x86-64 platform, but I forget what came of it. -
Me thinks it's time for a password on the BIOS.

Yeah. My granparents have a local ISP, and they connect at 48k pretty consistantly. Not as fast as the DSL I'm used to, but I'm impressed to say the least. -
I think a lot of cards fit into that category ;(

Security and the internet... the alarming truth!
Brian Frank replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Security
People who aren't educated on computers=job security (when I can get a job in PC work). Right now, as long as <strike>stupid idiots</strike> customers walk all over the floor, I have a job to clean that up. It may be a pain in the ass, but it pays
