    Sp1 Inaccessible Boot Device

Ah, yes, using a localized version is probably best.

    Ditto what clutch said.

    What sound card to buy

You also may want to consider some decent speakers to go with that new sound card. Ive got the Cambridge Soundworks FPS1000 4.1 speaker set and its good. The sound card I have and no trouble with it at all, is the Guillemot Maxi Sound Fortissimo. The only bad news about it is its no longer being made. For $50 it had a lot of features like rear speaker output, Optical digital out/spdif, EAX, A3D, and Senusura. I havent installed the drivers for it, but it works great either way in Win2k. All the problems with SB's especially the live cards make me really glad I didnt get one. I heard a lot of people happy with the Santa Cruz cards as well as the Acoustic Edge.

Utilities to Defrag the Registry and Paging File

Well, this doesnt necessarily defrag the registry, but it does compact it and its called RegCompact. I got it at this website: http://www.pcworld.com

    What annoys you about Windows???

So whats your beef with Windows? Mine is autoplay, I disable it cuz I hate it so much. I also hate those 'Assistants' in MS Office, and that CD Icon dude in EZ CD Creator, they're in my way.

    battle of the computers

Yeah, same deal here w Best Buy. I go to one of the several comp shops to get it though, plus BB doesnt really have a good selection of mobo's, if they're in stock. Ive bought a few video card there though and some 80mm Antec fans, before they doubled the price . I guess its pretty good in the town I live in. Things we have quite a few of besides comp stores: churches and strip bars, lol. There must be too many desperate people here lol.

    Any Problems with SP1 and/or 2?

So how have you guys fared? Are you on the side with no issues, or ones that are just stupid--but dont screw up anything (UT takes longer to load between maps with SP2, the only issue Ive ever had with a SP).

    Any Problems with SP1 and/or 2?

I had that problem once, and the way I ended up fixing it was a clean install. I have absolutely no clue why that was, but a clean install worked out great. Im not totally certain thats the fix for you but it worked for me, just use it if all else fails/last resort thing.

    Help!

Oooh, that's not good. You probably need to take it into a pc repair shop and see if they can fix it, or see about exchanging the board.
  11. Brian Frank

    re

No problems here, two maxtors running flawlessly under both SP1 & 2. What probs are you having?

    battle of the computers

Inferno, you could go to a larger town that has the good stuff. I know that Moline (part of the Quad Cities) has a Best Buy, and you could at least get some decent parts there. That pc store dude is whacked, how do you keep your sanity. Nice system, CrazyKillerMan.

Do you have SP2 or the ata100 hotfix installed?

    Win2k woes.....

Here's the AMD reg patch: http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon-duron/amd_win2k_patch.html That might help, at least I hope it does. You could try a different PCI sound card and see if the problems go away too. The best drivers Ive used are the 10.80's. I havent used a manufacturer-specific driver because of BSODs after exiting one game.

Elsa Erazor III Pro (Video) + Win2k

I'm not sure, but I think the 10.80 Dets support the GF3. I still dont know about TV-out though. Have you tried contacting Elsa? The 12.xx series so far: 12.00,12.10,12.20,12.40. I have a GF2 MX from Hercules and I stopped using them cuz I'd get a blue screen after exiting one game. You may have to just try a few different drivers and see.

Anyone else having strange problems after SP2?

Wow! The only thing I have EVER noticed with either Win2k service pack, and only SP2, is that UT takes a looong time to load between maps, but that's it. Everything runs, even my CD-Burner.

    Sp1 Inaccessible Boot Device

WD40, running the repair option will not erase SP1, it mearly fixes and maintains the Win2k install. Ive had to run the repair option a few times under 2k, and SP1 still lives on. You may have to delete a few items off your start menu, depending on the repair option, but thats it. SCR512 not everything is necessarily a fault with a Via chipset. I have a flawlessly running system with a Via chipset and two maxtor hard drives. The maxtor drives are the best drives Ive ever had. I didnt see anything mentioned about a Via chipset there, just so you know. The only possible indication is ATA66, but Intel has had chipsets that have that too. But this is definitely hardware related. WD40, what is your motherboard anyway? A bios flash may help too, but try the repair option first.

    Dual Boot removing C:\Millenium

Yeah, reformat and reinstall, then run the repair option, or Win2k will go bye-bye from booting.

Need help with Windows XP install

#1, you wont be able to install XP over ME unless its the HOME version. #2, it is HIGHLY recommended that you either do a dual boot or do a clean install. The reason for this is that you'll have a lot less problems than if you do this. You wont be able to get rid of the screen easily. You may be able to change a boot record or something, but Im not sure. The other alternative is to reformat your hard drive. Also, which beta is it? There are several out, and that will help us out too. Unless XP completes the setup, you cant do anything about that OS choosing screen, called a bootloader. If you did, Id put up how to do it, but since you dont, it wont help you any.

Elsa Erazor III Pro (Video) + Win2k

You probably should use the Elsa specific drivers for your card off Elsa's website. Also, which drivers are you using? 12.xx?
  21. I feel that Im in the minority of people who have not had problems with, or hate, Via. I want to see how many people really have had issues with a Via based board, because it seems that many people dont like Via. I personally have not had a problem with a Via chipset, but obviously, others here have.
  22. Brian Frank

How many here have had problems with a Via chipset?

Yeah, thats it, dragon-lord. I also have heard Intel will be completely redoing the Northwood so that going to something other than RDRAM wont hurt performance. P4+DDR, yeah!

    battle of the computers

I have a store that Im not fond of, and they think the Asus A7V is a crap mobo, but at least they get there products right. This dude sounds like a scammer, especially with that AIW "Radeon". He is either trying to screw you, on crack, or an idiot. TNT2 M64 as 'high-end' WTF is this dude trying to pull? Ive only seen that on high end complete systems they sell at Best Buy and Circuit City. I mean I can understand some fluctuation in the price between stores, but $130 for any TNT2? Yeah right. I also know that despite the fact Socket 8 didnt really catch on, it DID exist. That dude is crooked...hope there are more pc stores in town Inferno. Have you checked Western Digital's web site to double check? 10K IDE drives would be all over if they actually came out LOL Maybe you should report him to the BBB. He shouldnt be having prices that way outta whack.

USR Model 2977 OEM internal 56k hardware modem

    Got the 1007 BIOS, zirik?
  25. Brian Frank

How many here have had problems with a Via chipset?

Not the current one. The next version of the P4 will, but the bad news is that it will most likely be in a slightly different and incompatible pin grid array. Ive also heard that Intel will be releasing both Socket 423 and 478 versions of the next P4. Cant remember the code name for the new P4 core though. The current one is Willamette.
