shared irqs in w2k how can i seperate them?
Brian Frank replied to braxin's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I had major issues that required a reinstall when I messed with ACPI. If everything runs fine, LEAVE IT ALONE!! It is more trouble in the end, at least in my experience it is. Ive screwed up my system everytime Ive messed with ACPI. Win2k ignores the BIOS IRQ settings, so you can change them all you want to no effect whatsoever. -
Try running the repair option off the Win2k cd. Boot off it like you would to install, but instead of hitting "Enter" to install, hit "R" at the screen. Choose fast repair and then have Win2k cd find the installation for you.

INACCESSABLE BOOT DEVICE.... old one i know but please help
Brian Frank replied to CaRRiT's topic in Hardware
Have you tried setting the T-Bird back to 1GHz and trying the set up? -
What exactly have you tried? And what are your specs? I heard something about this problem in 98, but the mag it was in is at a friend's, so if I see it again, I'll try to remember to post it.
-
For the ATA100, there is a hotfix out for it, or if you have Service Pack 2, the ATA100 support is included. I would see about the hot fix though. Also note that the ALi Magik chipset is a very new chipset and therefore may have some problems that need to be worked out.

alright ... detonator drivers ... 7.xx series or 12.xx serie
Brian Frank replied to kingtrey's topic in Hardware
Actually, the 10.80's seem to be a little faster than the 12.00's, so you might want to take that into consideration too. UT and other games run best under the 10.80's in my experience. -
Hmm, so am I, but Ive been able to switch drivers w/o a prob. Tried reinstalling NvRefresh? Thats the only thing I can think of...unless you can try a few versions of NvRefresh.
-
The only manufacturer to come out with modded Nvidia drivers for the 12.xx is Elsa. You may have to wait till asus puts up their drivers or you may have to give up. Also, note that XP is still in beta, so there are some bugs still to be worked out yet. If you havent, you might want to consider sending in a bug report too.

Yeah, that was a bad move on Jdul's part. Like he should be the one to pull that ****. The majority of the flames here and badmouthing were done by him, so I agree that was one of the stupidest things he couldve done. Also, looking back on the big thread, it seems Jdul was banned before!!!! 8)
-
What depth are you using it under? 16- or 32-bit? 32-bit has a lower cutoff point than 16-bit.
-
Here's what I got about the banning, all what I figured out: JDul had a bunch of other crap against him already, and this was the last straw. He knew his stuff, but on the subject of WinXP he would go nuts if you spoke ill of it. XP is in beta, and I hope they get somethings right before the final release. It seemed to me, that most of the issues, besides his long thread, dealt with WinXP. He was a zealot about it, and if you didnt like XP, you were an idiot. He was closed minded about the choice of OS. Im not saying you are wrong to use an OS if you want and feel strongly enough to recommend[\I] it, thats fine. JDul went overboard when he visciously attacked those who disagreed with us about it. There was a fine line between rational support and extreme life or death support. Go a head and voice your opinions, but dont be an a$$hole about it, if at all possible. Ive had a few threads that Ive been the source of some flames, not to say those shouldve been done, but you get the point here. Enough is enough.

Yeah, Down8 is right on the money. Tyan, which is know for their server boards, has a preliminary board out for the Thunder K7 dual socket A, with the 760MP chipset. It has Ultra160 SCSI, so its not gonna be cheap, however, coming from Tyan it should be stable. The only bad thing is Tyan board abosolutely suck for overclocking, so dont get one if you want to OC. I have one for my P3, and I didnt get a good OC out of it, just because the board was not intended to do so. Wait until Asus and Abit get their solutions out for the desktop. If you want to go see it, Tweak Town has a pic up about it and a link. URL: http://www.tweaktown.com Edit I looked at the board and it looks like it will use a PSU like the ones required for Pentium 4 board. In otherwords it needs an ATX 2.03 PSU with a 12V 2x2 power connector in addition to the standard 12-pin power connector. Maybe 400Watt PSUs will start becoming standard fare in the next year or so with this kind of power requirements.

Firstly, do you have the latest patches and drivers? Also, if you dont have the AMD Win2k patch for pc using the Athlon or Duron, I'll post the link for you. If you dont have Service Pack 1, I would suggest grabbing that at least too. Are you overclocking anything at all? Also, check your cas timings in bios. If they are set to 2, try setting them to 3 and then see if you continue with the lockups. Im just as perplexed as you are, so try this and see what happens.

Id guess that something somewhere is corrupted, but I cant say where. If all else fails, you could do a reinstall, but lets not go there just yet. Got SP1 yet? Have you been using Norton Utilites or System Works? I would not use those again if you are, bad things (registry screw ups) come when you use most of the utilities. Im not sure what it is, but Im definitely thinking that something got corrupted. Also, did you recently add any new hardware, specifically a new stick of RAM? Hope this gives you something to work with.
-
From what I understand the AMD 760MP chipset will be the first dual AMD chipset. It supposed to be out later this year. Im not sure if the current crop of Athlons and Durons are SMP capable, but I believe the next Athlon--Palamino will be. Dont know about the Morgan(the next core for the Duron) though. Dual Athlons=kick A$$!

Ive hit Print Screen, Ctrl, and C, and Im not sure if it took the shot of the desktop. How do I confirm this, and how do I get it on to the post? Im missing something here...

When I talk about Linux Zealots--Im referring to those who like any other OS zealot(Windows, Mac, BeOS) that refuse to see the problems facing that OS, and think that every other OS is totally inferior. Plus, it seems that certain memebers of the Linux community compare Linux to Windows 98 as far as stability. If they would look at all the other WinOS's(Win2k and XP) they would see that the Windows crashing is not as common. I think the OS that is used depends in part on what apps youre running. If all I did was graphics, Id have a mac. I like Linux, but even the mac has been around a bit longer. Unfortunately, there not a whole lot of Linux apps you can get right off the shelves. I think the biggest issue facing Linux is getting onto the home desktop market. If Linux got there that would be sweet. Linux is cool, but unfortunately, the lack of drivers and apps out for it is a major issue too. The latest offerings by MS have made me at least consider Linux as an option. I love the fact that with Linux, you get a ton of apps, which helps to offset the fact that there's not much out there for it. Yes, I use KDE...when I have it installed. I think Im gonna get SuSE 7.0 Professional sometime, because Mandrake isnt good for gaming and stuff. Pluse SuSE is supposed to have excellent driver support. I wish that with the OS's there could be a variety of files that could be shared without having to have 3rd party software. Like have a hybrid cd for Windows and Linux of the same game. I know theres a file for UT for Linux that you can download and it will install the UT game off the UT disc for Windows. That is good, because it seems that most of the Linux community has had enough of MS, and probably still have their Windows apps discs laying around. Now why cant there be more of that universally?

Im not for piracy here. I just think that if you have legally purchased any product, you should not have to continually register. And if using a crack to stop having to register every single time I will. Im not gonna burn off my copy of XP, go buy it yourself. I dont mind putting in an product code, but it bugs me that I have to register the OS, everytime. That is something that should be optional, and not have a time limit. Im not endorsing copying a ton of programs from somebody else for yourself and then cracking them all. I really dont feel like having to call up MS and have them give me a registration code. Also, I dont know about you, but I dont feel like getting the same software for each computer I have (I have 3), so the OS alone, just the upgrade if I bought it for each OS would be $600. Why should I buy the same software twice? Also, if, and a big if at that, this product activation makes it so if you replace a bunch of parts so your machine is way different than when you installed XP the first time, you might not be able to register it. Plus, think about these review sites that take out motherboards and other parts on a regular basis. Im sure they do a clean install once in a while, so this activation is a problem there. Plus, whats all the latest and greatest hardware if you keep loosing your data? You data, it would seem, makes the computer, not the hardware. The activation looks like it checks the hardware on your pc. We're all smart enough here, figure it out. Plus, I know a lot of people here like XP, so Im not trying to start a little flame war here. I dont like it as it is, I think that Win2k is better right now. XP should be good in its final release, but Im sure thats what was said about ME when it was in beta still.
-
Im not saying that piracy should happen, but when you purchase a pc, you should have a say on what OS you use. MS should not be told of this, because of the possiblity that it could use it for evil. Microsoft does not have the right to tell the end user what OS or any other software it has on it. Microsoft does not like it, and I dont care if the manufacturer tells MS that some users are selecting to not have a preinstalled OS, thats fine. I dont think any good can come of pc manufacturer's getting paid to rat anyone out. I dont think MS is allowed to have that sort of information about the end user of a pc. That is a transaction between the user and the pc maker, and although the MS OS may be used in the pc, that doesnt mean it has to be used either. Piracy is bad, but this has nothing to do with piracy. If someone wants to buy an OS for themselves where they live, they are entitled to do so, and there is nothing MS can say or do to stop this. MS seems to have some motives in the way of monopolizing the market, and so far they have been unsuccessful, so hey, why not resort to low tactics?

Well, Im not really too crazy about this activation crap to begin with, especially when I have leagally bought a product. I will use war3z/cracks if necessary to avoid this activation crap. Plus, if I do go a head and get XP final, I will buy one copy and one copy only. I will be blunt--if you have more than one computer at home, you should not have to buy a copy of software for each computer. This is not illegal to my knowledge, and since I purchased the software I should be allowed to install the single copy I have on all of MY computers, not anyone elses. I have heard some horror stories about activation, and you can bet I will fight against activation, because I think MS or any other company should not put the consumer through this crap if they have legally purchased a product. True, there are the few bad apples that do burn off Windows copies by the truckload, but most of us are honest people (I think). BTW, Ive been running XP, and I think that Win2k is better, so Im probably sweating over nothing. I do screw up Windows, but not fast enough to reinstall every two weeks. Im glad Sonic Foundry was nice enough to up my activation times so I dont have to buy another copy of ACID. Im hoping MS will work on a better system so that it can nail the crooks without having to smack the consumers.

I know in HL if I use D3D, I will have a black screen, so I have to use Open GL for it. I dont know if that will help with Diablo 2, but you never know.

Blade Runner, good thing for pointing that out. I hate Linux zealots, because about the raving on how good Linux is. Sure it may be good, but the apps I want to run are always on Windows, and we're lucky if we see the full playable version of it on Linux. Plus, Linux is not going to get very far if it cant penetrate the home market. End rant. Okay, back to the topic: So this is the final version of SP2? Thanx in advance!

Well, if Sony has only designed the laptop to run on certain OS's, there's not a whole lot that can be done, except to try the compatability app.
-
I think you can disable the speaker in bios.
