I should put out a warning that your PCI bus and components as well as the AGP bus will run out of spec the higher you go. However the trade off for it is great bandwith. The best way though is OCing using both the FSB and the mulitplier.

Wellp, Ive thrown together a crappy little server. Im installing Win2k on it right now. I snagged an Abit BE6 mobo for $25, and have enough parts laying around to throw together a halfway decent pc for hosting games. Here's the specs: Abit BE6 Pentium II 400 64MB PC100 Matrox 2MB PCI video card Fujitsu 5.2GB ATA33 Fujitsu MX400 4x CD-ROM 1.44 floppy crappy 15" monitor I'll be dropping an old ISA network card soon so It can be on the network. Im also hoping to grab a stick for my multiboot machine and dump the PC100 into my Abit config considering the stuff's dirt cheap. And I can spend money now that I got money for my colleges summer classes. Scholarship just in the nick of time;) This ought to be enough to have host Half-Life.

Are all MS XP products gonna be sold on a subscription basis
Brian Frank replied to zirik's topic in Hardware
I agree with ThC 129. I dont want to have subscription based software, but for companies, that just might be the ticket. MS may be screwy sometimes, but I dont ever recall hearing about charging for updates. -
Uhhh...could you post what yu r doing when you get the error message. Thanx.

Ive just about given up hope for SP2. However, SP1 is running just dandy for me.

Yeah, get some newer drivers than that. Those are pretty old. And thanx for not multiposting...

Oh, goody!Another EA game that wont work under NT cores. I dont mean to be a downer, but EA just doesnt seem to support the NT base yet. They need to, or a lot of XP owners are gonna be pissed off at EA. I dont know what EA's problem is with NT code, but they better get a grip on it soon. Look at the compatability list on this site and see if its listed as running. Maybe that will give you clues.

Does MS want another lawsuit? How about the other companies? Is MS really trying to take over the world?

Well, I just picked up Serious Sam today. Wow! If you like to shoot things, this is THE game to get. Apparently, its got a new engine to it, the Serious engine. Anandtech has been raving about this game. If you want an interesting storyline, this wont be your bag. If you like to kill a bunch of enemies, it is. Its not just teams of enemies, but swarms of them, and many of them are big dudes. You barely have time to breath with the onslaught of enemies. And this is on the Tourist mode. You will like the weapons. Its a frag fest for all.

Maybe you should just hook up a floppy for the install of WinXP. You still got one laying around...right? If not, fdd's are cheap to pick up.

Dont have proper encryption level for remote connection??
Brian Frank replied to ThC 129's topic in Hardware
Just a thought: are you logged on as the administrator on both? Ive just got XP, so thats the only thing I can think of. -
I cant quite seem to get XP to share a drive. Is there some way to do this. The sharing option does not show up in the menu when I right click a drive. And I havent found anyway under the networking to get it to enable sharing. Ive tried the home networking wizard, but to no avail. And then for some reason, XP cant see any other pc's on the network, the two Ive tried so far and really want to network to are running Win2k SP1. We all use netBEUI, and I used that info someone posted to get nB on XP. The Win2k boxes will see XP but they cant access the drives. Im pretty sure its just a matter of getting sharing enabled under XP, but I cant say for sure. Sharing is all I need. Thanx.

Sharing drives in 2462? And cant see any other pc's...
Brian Frank replied to Brian Frank's topic in Hardware
Awlllrighty then, I'll play around with that, after my finals are all done. *sigh* -
Yeah, it was a fun thing, up until JD got banned (again) finally. Somehow, I think that was probably the best, seeing as how people were ready to start out there complaints about JD. I dont think that the offender should be brought up seeing as he seemed to do exactly what he said he wasnt trying to do via the name of the big thread.

Yeah, I'd try the repair option too, before anything else. What were you doing to screw up your system 32 folder. Thats some sensative stuff there, homi.

Problem with installing Norton System Works 2001!!!
Brian Frank replied to Son Gokou's topic in Hardware
I have yet to install it on XP, but Norton AV is the best. You need to get a patch to run it under XP from what I under stand. As for system works or Norton Utilities...DONT USE THEM! They seem to do only one thing well--screw up your registry and system. Ive just done a nice reformat due to a NU install on my Win2k box. -
I know this is kinda dumb, but, did you check to make sure everything is plugged in? Did you change the computer from ACPI to standard computer? I did that once and boom! no mouse or keyboard. Also, yeah try the repair option off the Win2k CD.
-
Yeah, why would you need to open that much? You must have some really big A$$ed TV and some really big A$$ed resolution to go with the needs to see a good chunk of the 270 windows. What do you run that requires that many windows open at the same time?

What are you looking for specifically. The Athlon T-Bird at 1.2GHz is Socket A. I dont think that the T-Birds come in the Slot A version higher than 800MHz, and for sure they dont come above 1GHz.
-
Also, to make yourself really hard to hack, disable File and Printer sharing too, and then get Zone Alarm, the free version and see how you like it. Norton Personal Firewall is good too. I dont know about Black Ice though...

Get Partition Magic and have a small partition for Win2k, and the rest of the drive for all your stuff. That way all your saved stuff will still be there. You will, however, have to install all the programs again after a reinstall of Windows. You should really consider something like a CD-Burner for backups to CD-RW too. That way if both drives manage to go you're not screwed over. You can get an 80GB Maxtor 5400rpm hard drive for around $300 USD. If you dont want to have to reinstall after a nice foul up of your system, so you're back where you were in a few minutes, you probably should consider RAID as alternative. Im not really too familiar with RAID, but if you dont want to reinstall all your programs, thats the best solution I can put up. Other wise you will end up reinstalling over your programs with the multiple partition method. If you dont want RAID, there is Norton Ghost, but Im not sure how well that does things, since some of the Norton line of programs excel in screwing up your registry, among other things.

Got all the security updates and other necessary updates for IE and Win2k? (the Critical Updates)

What browser are you using?

Does this do it all of a sudden or what? When does this happen? Try to see what you're running at the time of the black screen occurances.
