Off topic. the decoding of human DNA, a mistake.
Brian Frank replied to Cardinal's topic in Slack Space
Imagine the most annoying person in the world, like Jim Carey, and have a bunch of them running around. Id go insane! Sometimes one person is enough to make you glad we dont have human cloning yet. Yes lets clone people. Just what I need, a physical mean to literally mean it when you say you ****ed yourself. ;( I dont want a second dose of another person regarless of who it is. There is only one of you, and I dont think I want to see me in other than my mirror. Is nothing sacred anymore?! Cloning organs is a completely different matter, if they can do it without having to clone the whole person for harvesting, thus, screwing them up. Organs that can be modified so they wont be affected by some defect is okay, but this has the definite potential to wreck havoc on mankind. Plus, this is kinda getting into God's domain anyway, dontcha think. Cloning is something that certain aspects of can be good, but, I agree with felix, technology is a double edged sword, and we could be setting ourselves up for some major problems if this is not treated carefully. As with anything, there is the potential for abuse of it, so we need to tread carefully. -
ROFL! Oh yeah, I forgot, silly me? Hahaha! If it works for you, go for it. Confusion...LOL! Hahaha!

The game is only $20, but you may be able to buy it for less. That is an excellent deal for the game, especially considering its a totally new game engine and a totally new game. Serious Sam is FRAGALISCIOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D:D

I must be one of the few lucky people who havent had problems with Via based mobo's. Both of my PCs use are Via-based and run flawlessly. Just my 2 cents here.

Okay, help me out here. I got the FOP 38 today, and though it would lower my cpu temp, well it didnt. I put thermal paste on it--stuff from Radio Shack. Its the same temp as with the generic orb cooler. 2.) The fan is listed as a 6800rpm fan, but its not doing nearly in the +/-10% it claims, 4500rpm is NOT in the 10% range! WTF?! Also inside the box it says to hook it up to the power supply, and says something about the current being a problem. But so far the only problem Im having is the fact that it wont do nearly the speed it claims. Is this because Ive got it hooked up to the mobo or what?
-
I dont care what Ive got so long as I can overclock 200MHz over and still not go over 50C on a full load, even with the warmer weather. I dont think the place I bought it from knew about that, so Im definitely thinking the box was mislabled, cuz all theres was like mine. I did notice a rise in temp when I went to my full tower, and Ive got the flow of air from front to back. It will peak at 50C, but only for a few seconds. Also, my overclock is using a 1.75 vcore on a Duron 1016MHz (9.5x107), I guess this is a reasonable trade off for the power.

If the key mapping doesnt work, you could always buy a new keyboard, its not like they're terribly expensive or anything. Just a thought....you'll only be out $20. I know this is kinda a dumb thing to be recommending keyboards, but the only component left on my pc since I had my first one, a Logitech Deluxe 104 keyboard. Ive, like blown it out once and it was really dusty, but Id never had a problem to do and I realized that that might be a good thing to do. Ive had this one for 2-2 and a half years and it works great. And I have four cats too.

We all h a t e you JMD, dont worry about it. We're all out to get you. Hahahaha!

Hahaha! LOL!

I think as far as storage is concerned right now, you can get a decent price on a 40GB hard drive at 5400rpm. You probably will pay $20-30 more for the same capacity under a 7200rpm drive. I cant imagine that 40gigs would be too little, but you can buy bigger ones. I dont think 80GB drives are running at 7200rpm yet. Even if youve got a ton of files, definitely keep the old maxtor as a backup or storage for stuff like mp3s that dont need fast access, then you can grap a faster drive and use that for all your games. I should probably tell you the last time I tried swapping main drives out on my pc under Win2k, it wouldnt boot into it, so even though I copied the stuff over with a utility, it still wouldnt boot and I had to reinstall. I even ran the repair option... Just letting you know what you could expect, pimpin.

That is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!:D I dont really see the need for water cooling, but that still sounds, and looks cool. I love my full-tower case, and the painting I did to it. Someday, I might get water cooling. If you need it, from what Ive read, its pretty reasonable for that stuff, but Im guessing that's still pretty expenisve. Heat be dammed, I'll overclock regarless. The Durons are said to operate up to 90-95 C 8) 8)

The best thing, providing cookies are enabled, is the fact that I dont have to log on every time I post something. There will always be a question that has been answered, but sometimes you cant find it for one reason or another, so you have to ask. Thats happened to me, Im not trying to be annoying, but sometimes, I just cant find it.

*smack* Oh yeah, that AMD patch would be very nice too. Here's the link: http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon-duron/amd_win2k_patch.html

I know NTFS isnt close to FAT32, but I dont really see the need to use NTFS. If I was doing pc's for a company, hell yeah, they'd all be NTFS, no question. I just didnt want to put too much info down to mess him up, of course, Ive probably done that now. ;(

Ive thought about that, but this 300W PSU thats in right now runs fine. I dont see the need for another PSU or a bigger one at that. I have a ton of fans, Im overclocking and have a dvd, cd rom and a hard drive in my full tower. I do have a cdrw, but its just usb and has its own power supply. Im definitely thinking its a FOP 32 since I havent heard a difference from my Orb fan, so Im guessing the sucker was just mislabled. I have 7 different fan arrays, some alone some together, but I have a lot of fans in this full tower and I have yet to crash it because of too little power. Crashing has only happened because of a bad driver once, and the other times have been from too aggressively overclocking the system.

Im kinda curious about XP, but from what Ive read, I have no compelling reason, or need to jump to it. Win2k is the best OS Ive used, and will continue to use for a while, because the only things I havent run are DOS games. Things are running pretty smoothly under Win2k. I have this friend who has had hell running 98, but since he's got a Radeon, he'd suffer even more under Win2k. The Radeon is a great card, but ATI is killing it with the drivers. Oh, BTW, I believe that a Beta copy( not a War3z, but straight from MS) is $20. I cant wait to test it out when it comes in. hehe

Yes, the 4-in-1's latest FULL version are the 4.29's I believe, and Ive seen those fix a few problems in the choppiness area. It couldnt hurt.
-
Yup, just install 98 on a different partition or hard drive. Then run the repair install--boot off the Win2k cd and hit 'R' instead of *Enter*. Note--if you have Win2k installed on a NTFS partition, 98 cannot read NTFS, so if you want to transfer files, you'll have to be in Win2k. I always use FAT32 regarless of wether Im doing a dual boot with Win2k and some other OS or not. FAT32 helps, but its not necessary for Win2k, but 98 has to be FAT32 or FAT16, but FAT32 is much better anyway. It is ideal to install 98 first but I havent had problems doing it either way.
-
What OS are you running? Ive only heard of that problem in ME...
-
Yes, please list the specs. Its like calling a mechanic and saying "My car wont start. Whats the problem?" He cant just go "Oh, yeah its this, because there are a ton of different cars out, and many have a different configuration. Same deal here. We'd love to help you, but we're helpless until we know what we're dealing with.

Oh yeah, remember Serious Sam is a totally new gaming engine, so there are likely a few kinks to work out yet, that may be hope for older technology, but again I think the programmers are more worried about getting paid than supporting every last bit of hardware, so older technology gets left in the dust.
-
Of course if its gonna be supporting this technology or having the game late or getting paid less, that other technology is just not gonna get the support. No hard feelings, but money is a major factor, along with keeping a job. It is a good thing to have games that can actually utilize the 1GHz+cpus and the GF2Ultras. Yes, that does suck for people with older cards like a voodoo 2, but then again, if money is the drive, somethings will get dropped, wether the end user likes it or not. Life is not fair--therefore it can, and will suck sometimes. Unfortunately, 600MHz is considered lowend right now, but that is a perfectly acceptable speed as long as your video card is decent. The cheaper hardware is not necessarily bad, but in the past the cheap stuff just didnt hold up without overclocking, and even then, that didnt mean that it would be as good as the real thing. The K6 cpus were sort of a competitor to the Pentium II, and it did not perform nearly as well at the P2, and cost nearly the same. We all know what happened there. Nvidia seems to target their chips at a wide range of consumers, and you have the whole slew of TNT and GeForce lines(including the 2s of both series). Unfortunately, the TNT is no match for the GeForce 2 MX, and the MX is no comparison to the GeForce 3. IMO the MX is a very capable card for the money, and if you stick it with a decent cpu, even the Celeron, you can have a sweet gaming rig that should run dandy. End of lecture....
-
Is that an EA game? The reason Im asking is people seem to have problems with EA games under Win2k. That seems to be due to the fact that EA refuses to support the NT/2k code. Also, yeah, having an illegal copy could be the reason for your problems.
-
You shouldnt have a problem with that at all. I believe that Creative has drivers and Live!ware that actually has no problems installing, so that being the only foreseeable problem no longer exists. Also, dont freak out when you see that your system is running a ton of devices on a single IRQ, everything should run fine. Besides, what have you got to lose, other than your sanity;) . Definitely get Service Pack 1 and the Via 4 in 1 drivers. I tend to use the latest beta drivers and the 10.80s work very well, so do the 11.01s and the 12.00s. Oh, yeah, this is a very important patch so make sure you get it. http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon-duron/amd_win2k_patch.html It will keep games from crashing on you with an Athlon/Duron cpu. Its one of the most important things you need to get, other than the Service Pack. Good hunting
