I have encountered a little bit of a problem which hopefully someone will help me solve. I have just run Windows Update and downloaded the critical updates pack (the one which includes IE6 from Dec 13). I noticed that I also had a few other security updates aswell. After rebooting my machine, I decided to return to the site and continue with the outstanding updates. When I clikc the link for windows update, the page begins to load and then prompts me to download redir from microsoft. ?!?! This means I cannot get back into the site to continue with the updates. I am running: Win 2K SP2 IE 6 (with the latest critical updates pack, seemingley the cause of the problem) ZoneAlarm Download Accelerator Plus over a 56K dial-up. If this is a setting included in the update to stop automatic running of remote files etc, could someone please tell me where it is. All help much appreciated. Regards Mark

Help! My machine has a 98SE partition and a 2K partition. I can use my 98SE partition without a problem, if the phone rings while I am using it, nothing happens. I have a problem in my 2K partition. If I boot up and use the machine as normal, if the phone rings, the machine freezes. This can happen at startup, or hours after startup. However, if, after it has booted, I connect to the internet before the phone rings, there is no problem and the machine can be on for days no matter if the phone rings or not. The situation seems this: It is a race to see who uses my modem first, either me to dial out or the phone line on a incoming call. If I use it first, everything is fine, if an incoming call gets to it first, I have to reboot. So, why is this happening and why does me using the modem block the chance of my machine crashing on an incoming call. Confused, me too?! Any help appreciated. Mark

This may seem simple but this is my first attempt at networking. I am attempting a bit of home networking and have run into a few problems I have my machine (to be the host) which has a 98SE partition and a 2KSP1 partition. This has an internet connection. I have linked the machines and my problems are these: 1- I can connect the 98 box to my 98 partition. I have to shut down ZoneAlarm. How can I get around this? 2- I cannont yet connect the 98 box to my 2K partition. Possible reasons? The 98 end can see itself but the 2K can't even do that. 3- When I view properties of the Local Area Connection, I only have the General Tab, when I first installed my LAN card, there were four other tabs. How do I get them back/why did they go? 4- Do I need a gateway? At the moment I am just trying to share files, I will sort out ICS later. Note: Currently the host is set to 192.168.0.1 and the 98 box is 192.168.0.2, both have subnet of 255.255.255.0. I have looked in Help but it doesn't seem specific enough to help me with these problems Incidentally, I can ping the 98 box from the 2K but not the other way around. ? I have just realised that even though the ping request is timing out on the 98 box, every attempt is seen on the icon in the system tray on the 2K box and a packet is received in the status of the connection. Even more confused? Help! Using LAN cards with RJ45 crossover cable. Thanks in advance, Mark

Ok, I sorted out the 2K connection problem, I didn't have NETBeui installed. I still can't ping the 2K box from the 98 box though, does this have something to do with requiring a password - hence blocking the ping request? Still missing the extra tabs from the LAC properties, I need this to enable ICS. I can now access the 98 box from my 2K bix but when I try vice-versa I get asked for a password. I have tried the Admin password from the 2K box, and the logon password for the 98 box with no joy. I have also tried leaving it blank. How do I know what this password is, where is it set up? On the 98 box or the 2K box. Where exactly. Thnaks for listening, I'm getting there. Mark

I am trying to install the above, version 3.7 onto my Win2K Pro partition (D:, FAT32). When I try I get the error that it is unable to create a temporary directory and that I must have at least 814kb of free space (or something similar). I can install it on my 98SE partition without problems, and I know it works with 2K as I had it on before I partitioned. Any ideas, solutions, experience? TIA Mark

Does anyone have this working? I bought and installed this using the Full installation option, everything installed fine but when I try and run the game nothing happens. The little caption tells me that default configuration has been loaded and then the screen size window flickers on for a second but then I am returned to the desktop. No errors or hung programs, it seems as if it fogot what it was doing! Anyone? TIA

Mine is the original, I gave up on it and it now works on my all new 98SE partition. Nevermind. Mark

I just ran Windows Update for 2K which is on my D: partition. It said it had a few things to update including a device driver for my display adapter. fter running, it said that the display adapter had failed to be installed properly but the other had worked fine. I rebooted as told but then I get a blue screen telling me there is a problem with a device. I can get all the text if required but the jist of this is, I can't get into 2K, all the options in the F8 menu lead to the same blue screen, safe-mode included. What can I do? Is a repaired installation my only option and what will I lose if I do this? TIA Mark

I am posting this from 2K, I managed to get in before I read this. Indeed, the file in question is related to my mouse, I discovered this when I booted into 98 and looked at the properties of the file in question. I deleted the file and I could boot into 2K but without a pointer. I uninstalled and reinstalled the mouse drivers and the problem came back. So at the moment I have 2K that has no advanced mouse features. Why would this suddenly happen though? I even repaired the installation but the problem now exists everytime I try to install my mouse program. If I unplug the mouse, what difference will it make if it is the driver that is causing the problem? Thanks for the help. Mark

Ok, this is the error message: STOP: c000026c {Unable to Load Device Driver} \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Amps2prt.sys device driver could not be loaded Error Status was 0xc0000221 Then the rest is standard suggestions. Does this help? Thanks again Mark

Hi I am still getting used to using 2K as I have only had it for about a week. One thing that is bugging me, apart from not being able to boot from my ATA100 on my A7V is this. When I boot into windows, the items in the startup tray are loaded, volume, zonealarm and my mouse program. Everything seems fine as if I have booted with no problem. If I go into Start | Settings | Network and Dialup Connections, the machine freezes. If I leave the machine for about 2 minutes, it carries on as normal. It does this everytime guaranteed and doesn't do it in any of the other branches of the Start menu. I thought it was Norton Autoprotect and/or Auto Liveupdate but I have disabled both of these to no avail. If I look at Task manager during this freeze process, I cannot see anything running apart from the Idle process. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this problem and how to stop it? This will probably be the first of many questions so I hope you don't get fed up with me too soon. TIA Mark

Thanks for the replies. I installed it with a clean install and don't really want to have to do it again. The problem seems to lie in the Network and Dialpup folder, it also pauses if I explore my drive and go to the aforementioned folder through browsing my drives.

Well, my 2000 has arrived and I think I'm ready to take the plunge. Just thought I would ask if you reckon there is anything I need to do or know before I go ahead with it. My system is: Duron 800 Asus A7V 2x128 PC133 Crucial Cas2 (soon to be 512) Maxtor 30Gig, 7200, UDMA66 Pioneer 16x40x DVD Plextor 8x8432 Rewriter (All above running from Promise 100) Diamond V770 Ultra TNT 2 Hollywood+ SB Live 1024 Creative h/w 56k I currently am running Windows Me with my drive partitioned so that C: is 10 gig and D: is 19 Gig. On D: I keep all my mp3's, documents, downloaded files, email etc. Both partitions are FAT32. So, my plan is to format C: and install W2K. Couple of questions, considering I have never used 2K before. At what stage and how do I use NTFS, and will I be better off using this on both partitions or just C:. Partition Magic that I used to partition was version 4 and I don't have 6 yet. Will I need this to change the file system or will 2K let me do this? Will I have any problems with any of the hardware? Should I take my cards out at first, install 2K then add them one by one? Does 2K have as good driver support as Me? Any pointers that will help me out, all help appreciated. TIA Mark
