    W2K or XP?

Clutch, thanks for the reply. >If you buy XP Pro, you are allowed to install Win2K Pro in place of it as the license is backward compatible...< I'm not quite with you. Whatever version of an OS I have pre-installed, surely I can install any other OS on the same machine if I have the original disks, can't I? Put another way, if I have NT4WS or W2K pro on a pc, what's to stop me loading XP pro if I have the original disks? Am I missing something? Regards, Alan

    Netware client services

I have Netware client services installed on my pc (W2k) but I don't need it any more. Does anyone know how I can uninstall it? It is not in the list of installed applications in the Control Panel 'Add/Remove programs' option and I cannot find an Uninstall.exe anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. Alan Harris-Reid

    Netware client services

Bursar... >Erm, how come you have the Netware client installed, and no network adapters then? What was the point of installing the client? < Even though I am on a standalone machine, I had to connect remotely to a client's site via my ISP using VPN (Virtual Private Network). Because the client's server was running Netware, I needed the Netware Client Services installed so I could see everything on their network. It was very unreliable, and now we've ditched the solution in favor of a pcAnywhere connection, which is infinitely better. >Ah well, have a look at the properties of each of your dial up connections to see if it is in there< I'll give it a go. Many thanks, Alan

    Netware client services

Bursar... >Right click Local Area Connection (assuming you haven't renamed it) and choose Properties.< Erm... I have a couple of dial-up connections that I've setup, but no Local Area Connection. Should I have? Is there any other way of getting rid of the Netware Client? Many thanks, Alan

    Netware client services

Bursar, thanks for the reply. >The easiest way is just to remove it from the list of installed services in the Network settings for your NIC.< I'm rather ignorant in this area. NIC? Please tell me how I get to the services list (I'm running W2K on a standalone pc). Regards, Alan

    Website failing...

Using IIS 5.0 under W2K, I'm having a problem with my website frequently failing. If I look at the site properties in the IIS Management console, it _appears_ to be running ok (ie. no 'Stopped' message against the root virtual directory), but all I need to do is stop it, restart it, then everything is ok until the next failure, which may be a couple of hours or days later - there appears to be no pattern which I can see at present. Looking at the NT event viewer, I noticed the following error message which occured when the server was last rebooted... "The HTTP server was unable to load the ISAPI Application 'C:\WINNT\System32\idq.dll'. The data is the error." The file mentioned in the message is present. If anyone could suggest anything that might be causing this (embarrassing) problem, I would be grateful. TIA Alan Harris-Reid

    Website failing...

Clutch... Here is what I can see from your 1st reply in this thread. As you can see, the stuff you quoted in your second reply (Removing unused script mappings, etc.) is not there! Quote: Are you using Index Server? Because if you are not, remove it from the global WWW properties. You can check that out here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...crsc_iisscr.asp Also, have you properly locked down IIS (all the updates, use URLScan/IISLockdown, etc)? IISLockdown would normally unregister that filter anyway unless specified not to, so you are probably not using it. You should check your IIS logs as well to see if you are getting scanned or have been attacked by some old Code Red servers, because they used to hit some old exploits on that filter. If you were being scanned, you would see some gibberish like this in your logs: /scripts/..%%35c../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir HTH __________________ Regards, clutch Regards, Alan

    Website failing...

Clutch, many thanks for your reply. I'll take a look at everything you suggested and see if it makes any difference. BTW, I'm looking at your original reply right now and I definitely cannot see the last part. How could we be looking at different versions (apart from the fact that I am a 'Junior member' (when do I lose that tag?) and you are a moderator)? Regards, Alan

    Website failing...

Clutch, thanks for the reply... >>Are you using Index Server? Because if you are not, remove it from the global WWW properties.<< Sorry, I should have said IIS was running on NT4 SP4 (I was looking at the wrong server!). AFAIK NT does not have Index Server (at least I can't see it on the services list). If not, how do I remove it from the global WWW properties? >>You can check that out here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...crsc_iisscr.asp<< Tried that. All I got was the message "The page you're looking for has been moved or removed from the site." >>Also, have you properly locked down IIS (all the updates, use URLScan/IISLockdown, etc)? IISLockdown would normally unregister that filter anyway unless specified not to, so you are probably not using it.<< Sorry, you are talking to a total novice when it comes to some of these terms (the site owner's IT dept, who installed IIS, don't know much about it either!). What are URLScan and IISLockdown? >>You should check your IIS logs as well to see if you are getting scanned or have been attacked by some old Code Red servers, because they used to hit some old exploits on that filter. If you were being scanned, you would see some gibberish like this in your logs: /scripts/..%%35c../winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir<< Logs show nothing at present... Regards, Alan Harris-Reid

    Running games on NTFS

I currently have my HDD partitioned into a C: drive (FAT32) and D: drive (NTFS). Currently all games are in subfolders of c:\games. I wish to convert the whole HDD to NTFS. Will I have any problems running games or should I stick to FAT32? Typical games currently running are Elite Force, Star Wars Racer, Quake III, Worms 2, Rogue Squadron, Phantom Menace, Tachyon. I am using W2K SP2. Any help would be appreciated. Alan Harris-Reid

    Voyager Elite Force

I am having problems with Voyager Elite Force. The graphics are bad, worse than I would expect from a game of this quaility running on this hi-spec hardware (far higher than the minimum recommendation). The edges of many images (especially people) are too 'straight' and 'blocky'. There are also occassions when the image freezes on-screen and occasionally blacks out, and the sound repeats itself over-and-over again. The only way to get out of this indefinite loop is to reboot the pc - I cannot even kill it via the task-manager. This freezing happens randomly, sometimes twice in 5 minutes, then nothing for 40 minutes. Configuration... Windows 2000 ATI Xpert 2000 32Mb AMD Athlon 1GHz 40 GB HDD 128 Mb RAM Soundblaster PCI 128 sound card DirectX 7 Any help would be appreciated. Alan Harris-Reid

    Voyager Elite Force

Thanks to all who have replied so far... Hawkboy... >As for the cheap graphics, I suggest a refund!< My ATI Xpert Pro 2000, cheap?? :-( I suppose it is by today's standards, but it was blinding when it first came out (aren't they all?). I find it hard to believe that the min. recommendation of 233 MHz processor, 8Mb video card, 64Mb RAM would be sufficient to run Elite Force on any machine! Regards, Alan

    Receiving faxes with W2K

Using W2K, does anyone know how I can launch the fax service so that there is an icon sitting in the task bar from which I can switch receive on/off. I am looking for a quicker way of setting the fax to receive mode than going into the Control Panel, clicking on the Fax icon, going into Advanced Options, clicking on Fax Service Management Console, expanding Devices, right-clicking on Modem properties and clicking Receive. Any help would be appreciated. Alan

    CD packet-writing with W2K

I am trying to find some decent packet-writing software for my CD-RW (Plextor W1210) running under Windows 2000, but I'm having the following problems... 1. Bundled with the read/writer was WinONCD 3.7, which is W2K compatible, but the associated packet-writing software (Packet-CD) is not. No upgrade available on website. 2. Nero 5.0 is W2K compatible, but the bundled packet-writing software (InCd) is not. There will be a free upgrade when it is released (Jan 2001 according to the website), but there is no sign of it yet. 3. Adaptec's Easy CD Creator contains DirectCD, which appears to be the most popular solution, but I can't find a supplier here in the UK which has any copies in stock at the moment. Is there any other software worth trying (perhaps shareware)? Any help would be appreciated. Alan Harris-Reid

    CD packet-writing with W2K

Quote: <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by HN: HN just saved Alan Harris-Reid from spending money on a program he already owns, clap-clap-clap :-)</font> I might own WinCD 3.7, but until you pointed out that DirectCD for W2K replaced PacketCD as a download from the Adaptec site, I'd never have known. CD packet-writing with W2K

    >Adaptec/Roxio is still offering upport...in german...(HA-HA) They have supplied DirectCD v3.01E (works perfect with Windows 2000) for us Windows 2000 users with WinOnCD 3.7 (it checks for WinOnCD)< I'll check it out - many thanks. Alan

    CD packet-writing with W2K

    >DirectCD's good stuff... I like the fact you can work with Cd-R & CDRW just like it's a harddisk! Drag & Drop files to it from your harddrives, delete them (not true delete on CDR though, only blows that track out), etc. the whole 9 yards!< Sounds just what I need, now all I need is to find a supplier that has it in stock, or join some long waiting lists. Win2000 SP1 installation

I've just upgraded my Win200 installation to Service Pack 1 via the 'download modified files only' option on the MSFT W2K website. The files were downloaded into c:\winnt\servicepackfiles\i386 and automatically copied into the appropriate directories. In case I need to install SP1 again I would like to do so from these files (which I will back-up onto a CD). The question is, what program(s) do I run in order to reinstall SP1 from these files? Or can't I do the installation this way? Any help would be appreciated. Alan

    Games won't work under W2K

    >I think you mention below that downloading the latest ATI driver fixed the problem - is that all that was needed to fix it?< In my case, yes, that was all that was needed to get Star-Wars racer running. However, I would still like to get to the bottom of the "MSVCRT.DLL for Win32 Error: MSVCRT.DLL is not compatible with Win32s" problem. Anyone got any ideas? TIA Alan
