Price of XP Pro? ......Hopefully not as much as Win2k Pro, L
Questionnaire replied to Questionnaire's topic in Hardware
Ok guys... I'll just have to wait and see when the RC 1 & 2 that I purchased from the preview deal ship. If RC 1 & 2 turn out the same as what i'm running now, which is exactly what I expected XP to be, then I guess i'll just have to pay more for the extra shiat I want. Win2k features and stability + Win9x compadibilty and multimedia with the option to go dual CPU if I decide to go down that road at a later time. There will be a upgrade version from win98 to XP Pro, right? Upgrade CD's scare me after what happened with millinnium. But I guess i'll just give it whirl and cross my fingers. -

Quote: Why sell a ton of admin functionality to home users that don't need them, and then charge them or more for the "combined" version of the OS? That will be another reason for them not to upgrade. Then whats the reason to upgrade? Um, I thought the big hype of XP was it was finaly bringing the home and business OS together? Or did we all forget all the hype ups from a few months back? A reason for people not to upgrade is why buy XP when they already have 98/ME and all their current programs are well supported and work prime? Just for a blue and green toolbar and some other useless graphical updates? Heck, you could just use Windows Blinds or Lightstep and make 98 look just like XP or better! So lets see, why would anyone want XP?? Hhhmmm.... Well, the very reason I wanted it was to have the gaming, multimedia and compadibility of Win98/Me with the added features, admin power, security and the like of win2k all in one OS! Exactly what all the hype about it was! Um, have any of you been paying attention to computer sales? Computers arent selling like they used to and I see no reason for people to upgrade to XP if they already have 98 - win2k. Like I said, for what other reason other then a blue and green toolbar and um, mabye the new start menu? So you guys fill me in on why someone would want XP if their system already runs everything prime with what they got? It must be the new icons, LOL!!!! -

Quote: It is not so easy to determinate what is a home user and what is a pro user. What if I work at home, and play games? What If I want to use my system for Image Retouching, and after that, code my programs (with a legal copy of VIsual C++ 5).? No need for comment on that one! Quote: You go on living in you're dream world, where all computer products should be free. I didn't say anything should be "free"! I just pointed out that most software is overpriced and perhaps the very reason of the majority of warezed software out there. And after he/she misjudged me, saying I "ripped OS's" then I put him/her in their place when I started posting pics of my bought and paid for legit OS's Anytime you're ready, i'll start scanning in reciepts to all my software=) But I gotta admit, just like I have yet to try 2kpro because of its price, if XP pro comes out at over 0.00, then for the first time I might rip a OS. I don't want to....But hanging out here, by butte is already to sore to take it anymore. Quote: With lower prices, people would be encouraged to buy a legal product. And with good promotional upgrades, there would be no need of "I want this, then I download it from ***** servers". If only we could get M$ to "understand" that! Quote: 2-I'd love to see a Pro+home Windows XP version merged. Maybe I'm a "professional at home" user Thats exactly what XP Pro beta 2 is right now!! Just leave it that way and can home, price it inbetween the two!! Same profit in the end:D -

*Sigh* I can see when I bring home, home edititon already. No real user accounts- You can bypass the logon password by pressing cancel like in 9x. None of the prime administrative features/power/control of pro. (i'll let dual cpu support slide even though i'd like the option when/if ever I wanted to go that route ) Like I said, I run XP Pro beta 2, 2462 right now, and for all i'm concerned, this *is* a home, multimedia, business, everything OS! If you've run it, then you'd understand there's no need to split them up! You can change from the new Luna to the Win2k look on the fly! But I havnt actualy run home edition yet (mabye i'll go d/l that version to check out), but from the people I talked to that has, they said it's either *identical to pro*, or *almost identical*. So if its that close to being that same, then why waste the time? Oh and about: "Blah blah blah..... Business users dont need Movie make or whatever else they put in there, blah blah blah blah blah" Thats why I said a few months ago that all that fud should be user selectable on the intitial install or un-installable at a later time and not *forced up the butte* on the user. Oh and BladeRunner, don't let the flaming get to ya! After its all said and done, i'll still let you, or any other fellow M$ zealots get me in the butte! We can take all are windows cd's, oil them up and rub them over each others bodies.... oh yea....mub that windows cd all over me ya stud... oh... oh... now rub the win2k cd on me... ooooooohhhh baby...... ive never had win2k yet.... oooooohhhhhhhhhhhh:D HAHAHAHAHAHA LMFAO!!!! -

I'm not officialy allowed to agree with yaz until I get atleast over 500 posts in:p Quote: Why should the corporate version be bundled with add-ons and programs that only home users might have a need for (movie maker, and whatever else they throw on) Um... I run XP "Pro" right now and Movie maker and whatever they throw in there, is in there! Quote: Why should the average home user have to pay more for features that he/she wont use? Because! Quote: In addition, I don't know if the terminal services/remote desktop features would even make it to the home version, but in your scenario this would be a certainty. I don't believe that would be such a brilliant idea, do you? I dunno.... We'll talk it over to Gates as he rams us up the butte!? -

No no no no! I'm still looking for the rest of my OS's! (Do I have to post any of my linux ones? Just bought Mandrake with like 6 CD's full of goods about two weeks ago from EB....) Fark! I'll hopefully dig out the rest by tonight! (heh, i'm suprised I found the NT CD and Book, lol) EDIT: I'm gonna chill with the personal attacks Peace, and have fun with XP -

Quote: I hope you enjoy and continue to rip OS's. ROTFLMFAO!!!! Sorry, I have yet to rip them off, LOL!!! I'm a "Kid" ROTFL!!! Hey bud... I "OWN" my own business:D Do I have to prove that also? Dont try me, i'll always win:D I wont go out of my way to sound like a fag who gets it up the ass, without "lube" from bill gates, but i'll always own you! You may scream, there's no shame:D -

Number one, I 100% agree with what EddiE just said. No quoting needed here. Number two, since even on the M$ site they said somewhere that they expect a fair majority of home users that are power users to be using pro and on the other hand they said they realized that a fair amount might use home for business! Now let me get to my next point- The whole point, the big shindig over XP was it's finaly merging the business OS with the home user. Hasnt this been the main thing since we all heard about it(XP)? So dividing them once again is kinda defeating the big thing thats its suppose to be about! Why not just can lame home edition and make pro be for both? Like the whole point of XP and just name it Windows XP? No Pro, Home, Soccer Mom, Power User etc versions! (Excluding the advanced webserver versions) Price it somewhere inbetween what home and pro would cost and all confusion solved, lol! This is how it should be: Xp Home = Cancelled because its like soooooo pointless when Pro is almost the same exact thing and the point of XP, its big hype is that its suppose to finaly merge the business OS with the home user. (Have I said this enough yet? lol) Or possibly just release it on OEM, soccer mom little baby systems? XP Pro = Just named Windows XP, for business, and for the home user just like the main hype-up of XP! And just price it inbetween what Pro and Home would be. Why make two whole versions when they're so close to being the same exact thing? D'OH! Ok, and on to number three finally (are we having fun yet?): Quote: I really don't see why people have such an issue with having to actually go out and buy a copy of an OS for every machine they own. Um, please be serious here, lol. They're having enough of a "issue" with all the w4r3z out there getting people to buy one copy, for one machine let alone paying an upwards of $269.99 + Tax a crack for two or more personally owned and run machines! ROTFLMFAO!! You cant realy expect someone to pay an upwards of $269.99 + Tax a crack if they personally own two-four machines that's only used by that one person, personally! Doesn't matter, this whole discusion is pointless. Most of you guys must jerkoff to windows splash screens instead of pictures of pretty females, lol! Becuase by the sounds of some of yaz, you sound like you would let Gates ram ya up the butte in a heartbeat (Or do you just work for M$? Be honest, I am ) They overprice and be lame = people gonna get it for free They can have it any way they want it! I will win either way Oh and BTW you M$ zealots, lets not forget so soon how M$ equaly rips us off! Windows Millennium anyone? [ 19 April 2001: Message edited by: Questionnaire ] -

Quote: If there are many enterprise applications that don't support SMP, then why should there be a home OS that does? That's my whole point! Not many apps or what have ya support dual cpu because the average person doesnt have a dual cpu OS! So why would there be any dual cpu supported apps when most folks run Win9x? So therefor, the lack therof is possible because the mainstream used OS just doesnt support it?? Just think how badass a dual 1.5GHz gaming rig would be, lol! (Or do I need to get some sleep, hehe?) Ok, how do these prices sound? Becuase we care about the hard devolopment MS does for us, lol! Promo: $60.00 Upgrade: $89.99 Full: $179.99 ($199.99 Absolute Maximum ) Or overprice it and... W4r3z $Free Do those prices sound more fair for both consumer and MS? And I said dual cpu support should be a standard not because everyone can afford a dual cpu rig! But because if it's a standard, then more apps/games would start supporting SMP! Not saying just because the OS/Software supports SMP that im gonna go out and build a dual cpu rig. But it would be a nice option for people who can afford it, always knowing the option is/will always be there when your ready! [ 19 April 2001: Message edited by: Questionnaire ] -

Hhhmmm.... I still say most software is overpriced, end of story! *sigh* I hate the thought of upgrade CD's and not the full one because I heard so many people had problems with the upgrade CD of Millenium, called it a shit OS, then later getting the full CD version and no problems....Then everyone agreed it was a problem with the upgrade CD's. Well i'm getting the full no matter what! Even though I already have the full CD to 98se, NT 4.0, and Millennium. Better start putting money aside for it now, lol! -
I had access to the latest build a week before I downloaded it! Wasn't realy interested in it until I ran it! WOW! Kickass OS thus far. Also, I bought the RC1 & 2 here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/preview/default.asp The confirmation e-mail I got said I would recieve them around the june-july time frame. But heck... Why call it w4r3z? I keep hearing from alot of people saying the beta's are leaked on purpose?? True? Well I don't care.... E-mail Bill Gates and tell him I just couldnt wait for the previews I already paid for to ship. I'm not the kinda guy thats into w4r3z, but if I have the chance to try out something so big like XP before the general population, you damn better believe i'm gonna jump all over it Anyway.. Lets have a contest for whoevers the first to post a screenie of their reciept for XP when it hits retail The winner will recieve a brand new geforce 4 by yours truly- jdulmage [This message has been edited by Questionnaire (edited 12 April 2001).]

Heh...Good point!

That's the same link from my post! That's totaly pathetic (if true). This is the only reason why I have a Windoze PC instead of a MAC! BEING ABLE TO UPGRADE AT ANY MOMENT I WANT, WHATEVER I WANT!!!! I don't even care if they arent gonna do that, but just the thought of having a little baby system that's not upgradable and tweakable is enough to leave my PC hobby all together!! If my only options was to have a system that was totaly locked down, you better believe i'd go with the MAC! Or... I can just run my fully cracked, timebombless Beta2 forever, HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! In reply to: Quote: <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">The system does not allow end-user access to expansion bus cards. READ! http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2701649,00.html?chkpt=zdhpnews02 Microsoft's spec for your next PC "The system does not allow end-user access to expansion bus cards. This means users will no longer routinely open their PCs to add peripherals." And also read the comments from the people!! WTF is up with this??? I thought JD said we where all trippin' over nothing? "they'll never do this, or they'll never do that Mr. Official tester said" Why are they making such a kickass OS (so far), so LAME in some ways????? Neither! WindowsXP all the waaaaaaay! Ok, this post has the potential to start another OS bash war, lol! Now about Win98se Vs. WinMe. Understand one thing first, WinMe was never intended as an "upgrade" to 98se, you see. More of a sidegrade, IMHO. It was just 9x evolving, not being re-designed. Now for which one is better then the other, there is no answer. Some will have better luck with one or the other. I prefer WinMe over 98se, but some others on this board will have other opinions. They both have their ups and downs....Only you can be the judge of what one's better for you! If you already have one or the other, I *highly* recomend waiting for WinXP!! And if you can't wait, you can buy the release candidates here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/preview/default.asp Hope this clears up some confusion!

Hahah, just think where this post will be in two years .......still at the top with 400-500 replies, lol! -
I just wanted to say.. WinRAR 2.71 works here no problem. Both the trial and full. Infact... Ive yet to install a program in 2462 that doesnt work, including a mess of games....
-
Grrrrrrrrrreeeeeaaaaaaaaat tip!
-
Well I turned it off! It's completely off my system! LOL!
-
Nope, tried the fonts thing.....It's actauly everything that's a tad' blurry, just more noticable in text. Mabye it's just a driver/monitor/refresh rate problem in 2462? Becuase this didn't happen in 2416 for me, using any specific drivers. I think i'll check for an updated driver for the monitor.........

I did the mscofig like 20 times and it still kept commin back! *sigh* I finally deleted the whole folder of it: C:\Program Files\messenger\ I think that was it. XP is so kickass in someways but they need to kill all those little annoyances.
