    battle of the computers

Yeah, OLEerror, but your processor is UNDERmarked. Mine is OVERmarked. I realize that they cannot get to the exact speed every time, but usually when they cannot reach the speed they are looking for, they back up the speed & send it out @ 50Mhz slower. I downloaded a small program that is supposed to measure processor speed to the .01Mhz.

    Will XP replace 2000?

I agree totally that once a company spends thousands on upgrading to 2000 that they will not upgrade again for a while. What about when Microsoft has a full release of XP?? What about new companies & companies that haven't upgraded to 2000 yet? I don't believe that Microsoft will have 2 OS's in direct competition. It doesn't make financial sense to have direct competition with yourself, so Microsoft will more than likely put their full support into XP when it gets the full release out the door. What the hell is blackcomb? If this is another codename, they should fire the guy making the codenames.

    Geforce 3

OK SHS, I know that was a joke.....right? I was laughing at your post until I stopped & thought that maybe you are serious. No, can't be. Just in case: >3dfx is dead nope there not dead there are still lot of new card out there All 3DFX cards were pulled from the shelf. There are NONE, no more now, no more later. >Wrong Wrong there a few board out there I have seen them The Voodoo 5 6000 are only going to be OEM in a few workstations. It will never hit the open market. >Transistors count as nothing to do with it after all the idea of make a small die ".15" was help cut the cost not jack it up to the roof like Intel dose Kinda had to decipher this, but I think you are saying that just because of new die size & new technology, they shouldn't jack up the price. See clutches post. >But then again the card is useless any way being it maybe 1 yrs before we see any games if not longer to make use of it and by that time there most like lee be a faster one or ever one 5x better now they have 3dfx core. OK, you can sit there & say that it will be more than one year before we see any games make use of the card. How can you say that with a straight face? How about 3DFX's "revolutionary" BLUR TECHNOLOGY??? Did you notice that when 3DFX died that game-developers didn't seem to panic & change their games to fit Nvidia because their games were built around the Voodoo series cards?? There is a reason, all the new games didn't use ANY of the technology that 3DFX said were going to "revolutionize" games. Game developers saw that Nvidia was the future, saw what a bad decision it was to put out a card that directly competed with an Nvidia card that was 2 revolutions of the card older than was available at the time the Voodoo 5 6000 was going to be introduced. I can see the conversations that people would have had if the Voodoo 5 6000 hit the shelves. "Hey my Voodoo 5 6000 beats the **** out of your Geforce card" "Oh, that's OK, I got a Geforce 2 Ultra now, it is 2X faster than your card & it doesn't need its own power supply!!" Like I said, I know that you were kidding, but if you weren't......wow, that's all I can say. [This message has been edited by qwerty01 (edited 02 March 2001).]

    Geforce 3

3DFX is dead. The price will not go up, it will go down just like all the other Geforce models. The reason that the Geforce 3 costs the same as a P4 could be because it has more transistors than the P4 & has 64Mb of a specialized DDR memory. It costs more to produce than any Graphics card in the personal computer market. I bought a Geforce 1 w/ 32Mb DDR for $300 the week it came out. Now you can get a Geforce 2 MX 64Mb card for less than half that price. The cards will always go down from the initial price. Oh, in case you didn't hear, 3DFX is dead. It was bought by Nvidia. The Voodoo 5 6000 will never see the light of day in a personal computer.

    Cable internet, what's needed?

I read a long & exhaustive report on NICs & it turned out that one Linksys NIC, not sure which one, but it was $30 instead of $20, was the best NIC for under $100. Well, according to this one report it was & they did pretty exhaustive testing on it. I know of 1 site that said that the Netgear RT311 (older style) was the best router & the newer one RT314 was going to be reviewed soon. I have one & I have installed a total of 4 & all were easy to set up, had a good firewall, and, as you said, were very pretty.

    Win XP & physical memory

This goes out to all of you that are trying out XP. I know Win2k handles memory better than 98 or NT, what I want to know is, not the server version but the personal version of XP, if XP can utilize memory above 256. I have read everywhere that there is no need to get more than 256Mb of RAM (which I have running 98SE) because Windows cannot utilize more than that. Does anyone out there know if I will see any difference using XP with 256, or 512 or more? ------------------ "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. Cable internet, what's needed?

I am a big fan of the Netgear RT 314 myself. 4 port 10/100 switch, NAT+, DHCP, DNS. I am comming around to the Linksys NICs though. Electricity bills

LOL You guys obviously don't live in Texas. I have received a $350 electric bill for 3 straight months last summer. It stayed over 100 degrees for 29 days straight with NO accumulation of rain for 3 MONTHS. I have many electronics, but its nothing compared to having your air-conditioner having to stay on 24/7. If you turn it off during the day like most people do, you come back to a house that is about 89-90 degrees. EDIT: It has been nice lately, its just those damn summers that kill. ------------------ Athlon 700 @ 698 Epox 7kxa 256Mb PC133 Hercules Prophet 32Mb DDR Sound Blaster X-Gamer Pioneer 16x DVD HP 9100i CD-RW 2-30gig 7200RPM WD HD ViewSonic PF790 19" Win98SE Full Tower [This message has been edited by qwerty01 (edited 26 February 2001).]

    Quake3 Arena

I have heard from several sources that Q3 is compatible with multiple processors in Win2k. 1. Is this right? 2. Has anyone tried it?

AWESOME screensaver to use with your GTS!!!

Yeah clutch, sometimes it takes things like that. I was at a company where I brought all their computers, hubs, switches, and server from 10baseT to 100 & they just said, "oh, ok". When I installed MSN messenger & gave them all Hotmail addresses so they could send messages to each other they thought I was a computer GOD. Its really sad.

    Win XP & physical memory

When I'm running WinXP on a new DDR mobo w/ 512Mb of DDR RAM I might try it, but until then, I have my second HD for my page file. ------------------ Athlon 700 @ 698 Epox 7kxa 256Mb PC133 Hercules Prophet 32Mb DDR Sound Blaster X-Gamer Pioneer 16x DVD HP 9100i CD-RW 2-30gig 7200RPM WD HD ViewSonic PF790 19" Win98SE Full Tower

    Win XP & physical memory

Four&Twenty, I have never heard of anyone turning off virtual memory in Win 98!! It sucks as far as memory the way 98 handles RAM, I didn't know it would run like that. Do you just run apps, or do you run games too?? I wouldn't even try to turn off VM when trying to play Giants at 1024X768X32. The reason I asked this ?? is, I have a friend that has almost the exact same system as I do & he has 512Mb of PC 133 & I have 256 & I can't tell that his system is any faster at all. He copied my system exactly except for the amout of RAM & the case. ------------------ Athlon 700 @ 698 Epox 7kxa 256Mb PC133 Hercules Prophet 32Mb DDR Sound Blaster X-Gamer Pioneer 16x DVD HP 9100i CD-RW 2-30gig 7200RPM WD HD ViewSonic PF790 19" Win98SE Full Tower

About to take an MCSE test

I am going to take my NT 4.0 Workstation in about 3 hours. I have been taking the Microsoft PEP practice tests & TransCender practice tests & am averaging 96%. I have been studying out of 2 books, both Microsoft certified. I have been taking practice tests from ExamCram.com & the practice tests there are much different than the others. I was wondering if the real test is more like ExamCram, or the PEP & TransCender tests. Thank you in advance. btw, I have my A+, CNA, and the Networking Essentials tests passed. I am trying to get the MCP in 4.0, then go on to test in Win2k. ------------------ "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. About to take an MCSE test

I just made a 91% on ExamCram, so I guess it no longer matters if it is the same or different. I hope that is enough to pass the exam. ------------------ "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. " - Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
