Quote: Saddly. With out knowing the OS It's hard to answer. How ever if it's 2k or xp they are going to have issues with this. You will probably get a BSOD on the reboot. What you could try is do the ghost and then do a repair install, might work.. Oops sorry, It's a windows NT server 4.0/sp6a. I kind of think I'll get a BSOD but I'm hoping maybe changing something in the BOOT.INI will fix it.

I would like to migrate our network from NT server to Win2000 server. Since I am not fully verse with AD yet can I upgrade to 2000 using local.domain.com just within our network only. We have internet access that we use for email and website. I want to leave the internet connection as is for now. What's going to happen in this scenerio? or would it be easier if I just created a workgroup instead of a local domain. Sysadmin please jump in...thanks in advance

I'm curiuos as to why large company uses the dot instead of dash for user email (name.lname@xx.com) Is that a restriction of their web server where the _ is a reserve character? I have friends with emails using the dot scheme.

Just a general question. Where does windows2000 kept the cookie files that remember your username when you go into a web site. For example when I log into this forum I type the first letter of my id name and the name pop up. Same with the search bar in google. I delete all cookies/caches in IE as well as manually search in the cookie folder. Delete everything and still don't take care of it. I must be looking in the wrong place.

Check beneath your userprofile folder... iirc, IE tends to "mirror" (keep 2 copies of cookies & such) that data in 2 spots. Even if you move the default webpage cache location... you will still get cookies mirrored. That's probably to help out the folks that code browsers really, because afaik, that is the ONLY WAY they can keep "state" on the users of their site to both profile them & also to keep their settings and such, & that is to use those cookies as a sort of marker on your disk keeping that state up-to-date etc. APK P.S.=> C:\Documents and Settings\Bytemangler would be the place to start looking... apk That was the first thing I check. Got in my profile and delete everything in my cookie folder, and everything in /local settings/temp files. Still not work when I jump to google and it stillbring up the past search words. I did everything in IE too, clear history, cookies, offline files...nada...tuneS suggestion was the only thing I didn't check in the content tab..duh....that did it. All is well now. I'm running IE6.0.2600 just to let you know. I test version 5.0 and 5.5 (which most of our workstations run on) and I can't duplicate it.

Thanks, that was too easy. Where does it actually store the info??

Hello all, I'm hoping some of you admin will be able to help me out. I am looking into a bigger tape drive for work. Currently we have a Sony DDS-3 (12/24) drive and it work great. Unfortunately our storage will outgrow the tape in about a month or so. I am looking for a 40 gig uncompress type of sroage. I have some not so good expreience with Travan technology so I try to avod it. DDS-3 or 4 it good in my experience but I have not seen any drive bigger than 20 gig using DDS technology. AIT? I don't know too much about this technology, still seraching the web for more info. What backup technology are you using and can you recommend?? thanks in advance...
-
Thanks for the replies. The Ultrium seems like a great solution for enterprise clase backup. Our data max about 20 gigs, that may be an overkill. Been looking into AIT from Sony (35 gig one) and it's look pretty good. Anyone have any gripe with AIT? that's the next step up in term of backup technology from DDS-3 and DDS-4 right??

Hi all, Hope someone can help me. I was doing some VB6 programming for a co-worker. I'm just learning this from the book so I don't know much. Here's what I did. I created a simple quoting matrix gride and the forms/formula works fine. The only problem I have is that whe the form is open it overide all application and always place itself in the forground. What I mean by that is this VB program will not let any other apps be the active program. If I click to other apps, about 5 seconds later it force itself to be the active one. This is probably so easy for some of you to fix but what do I need to do to fix this?

Quote: Quote: Excellent reasoning, I would have to agree with you. Slightly off topic, but I absolutely hate my router... Linksys BEFSR41... this is the second one I've had, the first went belly-up after about 4 months. Anyway, I have to reboot/reset every 2-3 days or else my internet connection is lost, at times it will intermittently disconnect me from the remainder of the network... LOL it's a piece of work, that's for sure. From what I've heard, this is not uncommon with the mentioned Linksys router. So... I've updated firmware, to no resolve. I think in a month or two I am going to replace it with a Netgear RO318 router. Very nicely equipped, and I didn't find an extreme amount of bad reviews. Any opinions on that router? I have the exact same one for 2-3 years now, never a problem! * Odd! APK I too have the same router from linksys. Every once in a while I can't connect to the web and it work the night before. I hit reset and it seemed to work.

I search the forum but I can't find related topic to this. Here's my test. I created a user profile in Win2K server (user1). Profile path is root:\users\username. Home is \\root\home\username. My problem is with the home drive assignment. This setup let users see other users folders event though they can't access it. I want to assign drive x: to all users and it would be only their folder they are seeing. Which mean drive x: is everyone's home drive but different folder. I fix it but using the share with $ option and created a user's folder from the c:\username$. Ideally I don't want to have 20 or 30 user folders located on the root drive. I prefer them all located in HOME folder I have created. Server is w2K wks is NT 4 and win9X Any idea?

My original setup turns out to be correct. The laptop I was testing on got win98. I install win2K and the the profile setting works fine. The drive mapping is good. There is some funky issue that appear when a user log on. The message is "..windows cannot created the profile directory \\server\users\username.pds...please contact network adminstrator" I gave the user full admin access and still the message. What you guy make of it? I tried every configuration thinking it was a access level issue.

Sending message to all computers on a workgroup
bytemangler replied to JoosMan's topic in Networking
great program. I use it and it work great. Net send * "message" will work too but you're limited on how many characters you can type. -
Sorry if this is no the right forum. Does anyone know how to figure how much wattage a server has? I have six computers on a 20A outlet (dedicated). I'm going to be adding a DELL server soon that comes with 900 WATTS. Will it handle additional server?? Thanks

Quote: A simple batch deployment could ask each machine to pipe the output to a file and then upload those files to a given target if needed. Hi clutch, How does that work? I'm interested. thanks

Was testing some thing but I got stump. I have 2 IDE running Win2K server. I was just testing the mirroring feature in W2K. I convert the basic disk to dynamic, create a mirror of IDE0 to IDE1. It goers through the regenerating stuff and reboot. Now I have a mirror drive, everything works ok. Here's the test. I break the mirror. shut down the system. Unplug the mirrored drive (IDE1) and boot from just the original drive. That went well. Now I shut down the system. Unplug the IDE0, plug in the mirror drive IDE1 (making sure the jumper is set to master) and boot. Got as far as the login screen. When I try to log on it says I didn't have enough virutal memory and suggest I change it. Problem is I can't get in the system. Do I have to edit the BOOT.INI file? what am I missing. What I'm doing is to have an identical drive of the original so when the HD fail I can unplug the fail drive and plug in the mirror..not much downtime overhead. You may suggest Raid 1 or 5 but I'm just toying with this idea and I'm trying to avoid expensive Raid solution. BTW. I will not be using IDE on the actual server, I just need it to test. Anyone have any suggestion? Thanks

here's was my test, did it twice from 2 separate hardware config. test 1. 2 20 gig IDE on channel 1, CD is on channel 2. Disk only have one partition (c:\). After the OS is install I just convert the Basic disc to Dynamic and ADD MIRROR. I reboot when it's done. Then break mirror, shut down. make sure the mirror drive is set to Master drive and reboot. At the logon an error about not enough virtual memory. Problem is I can't get into Windows to change it. It just linger at the logon prompt. test 2. Same scenerio as the test 1 but this time I use 2 4.3 SCSI drives. same confuration and same message. I'm babling but hope it answers the question. I ended up using Ghost 2002 to do a drive copy. Works great I can now have a perfect clean image of the OS in the computer wating to be turn on if the main drive ever craps out. This is my way of not going to RAID and have some redundency... I still am interested in how to use the one from win2K though for purely educational purposes...if anyone does it successfully please feel free to post the steps.

I have 5 users with the same computer computer configurations. One user in particular has a problem with her email in outlook 2000. She says she sent email in the morning and it wouldn't arrive until an hour or two later. All outlook client are set by default to check for new email every 10 minutes. My desk have to problems getting emails. We're not on exchange just postoffice workgroup. I suspect her .PST file is getting too big (70 megs compare to most people at 5 megs). Anyone run into this situation?
-
Hi Clutch, Users are using Outlook 2000 (part of Office 2000) using MS Postoffice mail. My next test was going to be as you suggested. This does not happen all the time. Just once in a while, and then it's back to normal. All their .PST files are located on a server. Network traffice would not contribute to this cause it's not that congested. It's just wierd. I thought about re-installing the client again and see what happens. thanks for the reply.

Hi all I got another question on top of my previous post. Security issue with win2000 pro. most program requires I install it under admin account. After that however, I set a shortcut for a domain user to access. What I have run into is access denied to launch the application. For example I have a station setup to just scan in B/W blueprints using MS Photo Editor (part of office2K install under admin). Everytime the app is load I get this message "no file information found in the registry". I i give admin priv. to the user no prob. Outlook,Word,Excel does not seem to have issue at all? anyone have a suggestion?

I want to setup a w2K server for a test. It's not hookup to the live network. It's on it own separate hub. Was trying to set it up as a domain controller with no AD or internet connection. Every time I go through the setup as "Only server on the network" it got as far as configuring Active Directories and a message come up "network location cannot be reached". Can it be setup as a domain controller without AD? All network guru feel free to jump in. W2k is new to me. I'm getting a book on AD to learn it right now. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply from everyone. I did my own P=VR thing and having all servers on 1 breaker is pushing it. We're going to run another breaker for the new server, maybe even take some of the servers and move it into that breaker too. thanks

I know someone probably have posted this in the past and I musted have missed it. I have some W2k client on a network (mostly NT 4 wks). Each time a client computers connect to a network a script is run to map drives, synch clock with the server clock, etc. I like to know where I can set a user right in W2K Pro to be able to change system time so a script can be run to synchronize the clock. The PDC is still NT 4. NT was fairly easy in the user manager..but in W2K I have no idea where...anyone? Thanks

Hi Clutch, yea the earlier posts everything worked the way I wanted it. Everything wa NT wks 4.0 than. Now I have some new computers that come with windows2000. Some security settings is not where I'm use to in NT. I'll try the suggestions from the reply post and head out to MS KB.
