I have run into something similiar with out Linksys switch at work. Sometime after unpluging the CAT5 cable from the port the link light indicator still on. Reseting it (off/on) seemed to have fix the glitch.

Hi all, I have an NT 4 BDC that was recently got promoted to a PDC status. The previous PDC was demoted and being rebuilt. Here's the problem, Everything works fine the BDC became PDC, users are being authenticated when logging on. I had to do a complete re-install of the OS and during the process of creating a server to be a BDC part of the domain it tells me there is no domain controller on the network. Also the BDC that was promoted to a PDC will not allow me into the licensing manager (ACCESS DENIED!). I have also been getting a lot of Browsing event error from an NT2000 box saying it can't retreive lists of servers. Any idea?? thanks

I've used the trial program, did a port scanner on one of the server and it reports a bunch of possible trojans...freaked me out. I did a virus scan (CA Innoculate) and found nothing. How accurate is the reporting???

Does anyone know what could cause a print spooler service in Win2000 server to stop? rogue program or virus?? it's just wierd that it only happens when I have gone home. The next morning (7:30am) I have to restart the service up again. Bad thing is the owner comes in at 6am and try to print reports but can't. That is a problem. I've tried re-apply service pak (sp2), still no fix. Short of re-installing the OS I don't know what to do. Anyone have any suggestion??

My Win2000 Server is started to act funny in the past week. Every so often it would loose all network printers connection. The print service spooler has been stop (not by anyone). I have to go and restart it backup and than printing is fine. Also the event logs show me this The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master \\SERVERNAME on the network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{28B79676-E85C-4CE7-8191-37BCA9764B77}. The data is the error code. The description for Event ID ( 4-digit numbers ) in Source ( TermServDevices ) could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s): == This I started to get every time the server boots...NO clue Someone help..I almost have to restart the printer services everyday now

The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{D61EA51F-0E29-47E3-BF52-7B12D762C5E9}. The backup browser is stopping. The description for Event ID ( 1100 ) in Source ( TermServDevices ) could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s): . I'm stumped. So far the problems lies with only printing through terminal server mode. MS suggest a registry hack but I hope someone can give a better solution.

I get TerServDevice could not be found (Probably because my printer spooler was stop by some freak reason) Than the Browser cannot find a list of server... MS Knowledge base have something similiar but not exactly and it suggest re-install the Termservices (but I think getting the browser error fix would likely take care of it too...hopeful). I was thinking of deleting the WINS database and do a complete reboot of all servers (4), with PDC being up first. I'll try anything now cause the error's starting to be frequent now. thanks...

According to the services, NETLOGON is started. I have a NT 4.0 PDC set up with WINS, and DHCP. All network printer are controlled by the print server on the PDC. The win2000 box runs our production database set up as terminal server. All users access/print through a terminal server clients. This just start happening about a week ago. Any idea?

Does anyone know how to integrated a newsreader into MS outlook? or is it possible? Outlook Express seems to come with it but we use outlook 2000. I'm on the net looking for info about it, but not much lead. thanks in advance
-
Thanks for the info Clutch, but what I wanted to do is having Outlook 2000 be the only window open where news and mail can be viewed, eliminating the need for OE. Doing what you have suggest will only launch OE, or did I missed something?. To answer Ryoko, we are corporate/workgroup if you mean like we use outlook for everything and internet email is just one of the feature. Tried looking for addons but didn't have any luck, neither does Technet. I am trying to eliminate multiple windows opening since my users get "confused". The newsgroup was going to be use for Q/A or meeting forum for the employees. Note: I am currently looking in Office XP for this possibility but right now Office 2000 is our office suite. Thanks

For my NT wks 4.0 users I just go into the client's user setting, policies, in user's right add the option to change system time. Than it's just a matter of adding a NET command in the logon script...NET TIME \\DOMAINSERVER /SET /YES. When a user logon on the network the script (located in the NETLOGON folder) tell the client to synchronize the clock with the specified server, set it, and don't prompt for a Y/N answer. Hope it help

I'm trying to setup an FTP server using cable modem (insight) and win2K. Where's the good resource link you guys can direct me to? thanks

I wanted to setup some kind of a newsgroup type for the users at work. This will strictly intranet only. The idea is to have users collaborate on day to day things by posting. 1. I'm new on this 2. can anyone recommend a shareware or commercial prog? 3. give me some pointers..especially if you have done it. 4. I want to use Outlook express as the client (or can you recommend a better {cheap} alternative) thanks...

My testbed P2-450 128MB RAM Adaptec 2940 / Seagate 4 gig HD Win2000 Server I finally was able to install the program but this is what I have found. During the setup I have told NT to use the entire partition (4330 MB) for the OS. It does the install/copy and when it reboot while trying to load from SCSI drive I get Invalid Partition Table. WTF...I thought W2K solved the 4 gig barrier on an NT partition limit (I know NT 4 I have to create a boot partition and leave the rest for files). Anyway after a couple of try I was able to get it working by setting the boot partition to be 4096 (4 x 1024) of 4330 MB, leaving the remaining 200+ megs. I have done W2K workstation with a 20 gig IDE with no problem. This is just with SCSI drive. Any hardware guru out there? thanks

Clutch, I'm curios if you are using the W2K / SP1,2. I didn't press F6 during install cause I thought W2K would have have the latest driver for the 2940 (Adaptect have the latest dated 1999). Anyway, not discurage I decided to try the install with the cards next sibbling, 2940UW + Seagate 4330 MB UW. This time I didn't run into any problem whatsoever. Everything installs and W2K boot up without giving me a silly message about "Partition Table not found" on the 2940. So, my first guess is the BIOS on the SCSI card is the limiting factor, but other reply suggested otherwise....
-
I didn't press F6 because the controller was an adaptec 2940. You may be right about the controller has a limit? I'm heading over to Adaptec to see if there is a newer bios/driver.

I'm sure someone has tried this. We have a database server where all users are using for order entry/job etc. It currently has one NIC. If you have another NIC in and both connected to a switch than to a 100 base hubs, theoratically will that double the input/output for file access? or is it the same since it's all going into one database so there is a wait time. I've been thinking about this but I don't have a spare box to test it out yet. The server is a win2K server. What about the chance of data corruption?
-
Yep, I have a switch network. I have the servers run into a switch and feed it out to the hubs. We're running 100base right now and it's fine. I was putzing around and got to thinking that what if each building is dedicated to it's own NIC card? will it make a different. Oh well...just a thought. Thanks for the reply. Here's my thought process in case you're wondering. BUILDING 1 --> 100BASE HUB1 --> 100BASE SWITCH --> NIC1 --> DATA BUILDING 2 --> 100BASE HUB2 --> 100BASE SWITCH --> NIC2 --> DATA
-
I wasn't looking so much into clustering but rather just see if using 2 NIC cards running to on database would make a different in performance and speed. We have a Compaq Prolient that does have 2 nics and a "teaming" option. I was thinking having users from building A run through (NIC1) and users from building B on NIC2. Like I said since everyone share a common Database I was not sure if it's beneficial with the setup. What do you think clutch?

Win2K, anyone got this game to work? it's old I know but was hoping I can find a way to get it working. I tried installing and it didn't go Thanks

CONFIG_INITIALIZATION_FAILED STOP0x00000067 0x0,0x0.. Brand new win2000 install. It give me this from a cold boot. It also mention about file winnt\system32\systemCED (sp) not found... I went on MS Kowledge Base but can't fine any article about it. Any idea??

Well, I have install everything over. All seems to work when I wrote the previous post. Brought the machine in to work with me to keep an eye out. Turn it on and W2K start. Here the error: "WINDOWS 2000 COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPTED:WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced STARTUP OPTION FOR WINDOWS 2000, PRESS F8.

I have not seen a good space sim/shoot (X-wing type) for a long while and thought I might bring up the old WC series to see if it will work. Oh well...

Here the system in question: MB..ECS K7S5A DDR/DRAM RAM..PC2100 256 DDR Vid..Diamond FireGL Pro 1000 HD..20 GIG MAXTOR OS..W2K + SP2 +SP2 hot fix I did the clean install and re-format the drive. Everything is fine so far but the CPU is still being detected as 750 at POST. There is no jumper to set the FSB to 133 on the MB. I'm going to see if there is a freeware diag progs somewhere to test the hardware. Thanks all for the respond.
