(0==== McAfee Manufactures Virus Threat ====0)

I remember them from Dos times too. Just utter BS.... It won't only damage the company, it would mean a nice holiday in jail somewhere for about 10 years from the security guard to CEO.

Hmmmm...how about an NTCompatible mailing list?

Why not, it will give us the opportunity of *****ing about another "junk mail" I have one idea about it though. Most stupid threads and answers

    Gay "Send Error Report" thing

Or just sort out what is causing the crashes.... That is gotta be the most efficient in long run. I never heard of someone complaining about this b4. Contrary to popular thinking, computers are not supposed to crash or give you Ulcer.

    120GB harddrive woes

Actually not all of them supports it, and your OS doesn't make any difference. If you are using NTFS, which i suppose you do, it can support up to 4 TB's or something. And your OS acceses the HDD via the File system. So unless you are using a retarded W98 or Dos 6.22 no problems there, even then, you can multi-partition it or download the support files (like ez-bios) from WD website (they should have been supplied with the drive). If you wanna use it, just buy an ATA 133 Controller and you are in game. Speed is not the only difference on your HDD, but also the sector sizes and head counts etc. are outside the range of your current bios (I don't wanna get in to all technical details, not that i can remember most, do a web search if you are really curious.). if and when you install a ATA 133 controller all your problems will be solved. BTW speed increase of course is not significant, it wasn't significant when you upgraded from ATA 66 to 100 either.
  6. I don't wanna state the obvious but have you tried the windows update catalog, It contains IE menus & dialogs for W2k in all languages. I am not sure about XP since never needed it. address in question is: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

c drive scheduled for chkdsk almost every reboot

Are you on NTFS or Fat? and what is the role of this machine? PC, Web/print server??? If Fat Converting to NTFS would solve most of it. That file you mentioned with []. It is a temp file which was left behind because of a messed up this or that, don't worry too much about it. There is a minimum amount of space each file takes up on your drive no matter if they are empty or not. My system32 Directory is 610MB But i do not regularly check the size of it, and dunno who does. unless it is zero, which in that case you can't boot anyway, why worry. Also is it possible you choose the option to scan your drive at every reboot? or did you suffer any bad crashes or power failures lately? Your Hdd might actually be damaged, and windows trying to keep it going. Are there any bad Clusters etc?

need help with a batch file

Well user names go with NT so, actually you haven't had any problem. Oh if the connection is slow, you need the patch!

    Drivers keep going missing

For another immediate solution of freaking w2k, you might wanna go to the uninstall unplug device applet, select show hidden devices. and install all instances of your sound NIC and Video card. Have the drivers handy though, you are going to need them big time, when you reboot. There might be a problem of no video whic in that case boot i to the safe mode, remove the VGA driver (the one that windows uses to display under any circumstance.) from the system applet, install your video driver whola! BTW if you are not confident about this, just call somebody in, or take the machine to somebody who knows what he/she is doing. It can get messy and cause a great amount of hair to be lost in a short period.

Windows ME -> Windows 2K upgrade

My guess is, MS was so uncharacteristicaly embarressed about W98, they were sure everybody would leave it at earliest possible time. About ME, They now it is just a sack of sh*t. So they are playing dunno, haven't seen it and disowning it big time

Anyone own a Sony DVAS300 DVD Player?

I had it, for a while, It is good all around machine and verry nicely priced. However sound does distort after a certain amount of Volume (about %50). So i bought the Pioneer one afterwards, it is very similar but a lot better and about twice the price. Now I don't have either and use seperate decks.

Windows ME -> Windows 2K upgrade

In my opinion do not go the way of upgrade for any OS. It is quite steep downhill. Do a clean install and save your self million forum threads about problems and a clean install eventually anyway

    logitech camera problem

Quote: Uykucu it is fine as far as it conserns the brightness and similar sets . Is there any similar ways to download a vid or take a photo as it happens in the set of tools program ? Himm let's see, If it recording video or taking snap-shots you are after there a sh*t load of them... You can try my recommendations or just go to TUCOWS (Long live the COW) and download one of the zillion alternatives. We usually use them for simple or complete survelience (Talk about Cheap) and we use Web Cam Control Center or there is one from JPC Software . One massive advantage of these SW is, they work fine and second you can use any compression codec (Hint: DivX) you want. Alternatively. I know Genius WebCam SW is not picky about the brand of camera etc. if one of your friends happen to have it or if you DL it from their Web site. Than you will have all the functinality that you have mentioned above. Others might do to, I remeber vaguely Creative also had something similar. I hope it helps.

    Sapien74's Machine.....

In my opinion, If you are getting a new CD-R Get a Yamaha or Philips or HP. I haven't touched the new plextors because old ones gave us such griefs. I know it is not common but i lived through hell. Maybe it was just a series of them which was due to extremely bad luck. But not only they were faulty sometimes out of the box, but i had nearly half the amount we sold came back faulty in six months period.

    Sapien74's Machine.....

Nice one, but your CD-r kind of sticks out a bit I am not buying you could not afford a new one storry with that config. But if you don't need it end of story. BTW I agree with Yakob. Let's wait 2 months and see how much they are worth

    Slow Network connection

All kinds of devices share all kinds of IRQ's. This is what they are for and they mean Interrupt Request. What OS are you networking with would be my question. also what protocols are you using, and how are they configured? Another word of reminder is just because you see a 100 MB light does not mean you NIC is Full duplex spanking 100 MB. Have you checked the NIC properties is it set to auto speed or 10 MB??? And are you trying to move loads of small files, which would result in bad performance anyway or a one chunky one for testing?

    logitech camera problem

If you wanna adjust your camera, go to the system applet in control panel, pick your camera and hit properties. There is a Tab for you to set brightness etc. It is very similar with all webcam's. We use them for CCTV stuff a lot. Or you can reach it via the capture driver properties in whatever SW you are using (I am not sure about Netmeeting)

Quote: I love overhearing a conversation at eateries where the person talking has no clue about PCs yet is trying to impress their friend who probably never used one. My favorite is when people confuse hard disk space with memory. "How much RAM do you have Bob? "Oh I got like 40 Gigabytes of RAM, still doesn't seem to be enough though." LOL Well Ram vs HDD mixup is quite common, but has anybody paid attention to people trying to use acronyms and mess them up totaly. They will tell you something like "I don't have any UPS ports left where i can plug my *anythin* to." And before being able to reply you have to decode this to not having any USB ports left. This was the simplest when they think they know about computers it is just downhill from there. I had one guy get in to a bet with me claiming DIMM stood for "Dual Integrated Memory Module" I reaally enjoyed that six pack of Stella!
  23. just never occurred to mention it. since a good majority of this forum seems to think Athlon was the first PC processor I have one more if we are going that much further. River Raid I have it running on an emulator too. It's developer would have been proud. Accross decades and Gigahertz's. When it was made a GB was a more or less future prediction or Sci-Fi Stuff.

    NTFS Performance

Well jwl812, what you are describing is definetly not caused by NTFS. If you have any kind of respectable hardware you would not be able to notice the difference without some kind of makeshift test that some benchmark utility managed to conjure up, with no real possibility of occurring under normal operation of a computer. Even on 3D games I suggest you look somewhere else. amount of files etc is usually a good reason and manages to degrade even the fastest UW SCSI drives. For one simple example. If you have a 100GB Drive; standart cache settings for IE will take %10 of it as cache. Can you calculate the amount of 1Kb cookies or 5 Kb Jpegs or html to fill that up??? Try deleting some of your games, (you can't possibly be playing them all) clean out your Temp folders and use any defrag. How good they are does not affect the performance of your machine as an end result. Windows Defragger will do just fine for the moment. It doesn't screw anything up which is the important bit. About Fat32, well i don't even remember number of times i had to rebuild partitions or to do a low level format because of that piece of crap. stick yo NTFS. Anyway you need to format to go back to Fat32.
  25. What about removing it totally and getting a cheap apache or something just for the sake of testing. you can pick one up as low as about USD$15. Give it a try.
