Himm, there is a way of doing it. it goes as follows. First you need a decent reader and burner which can read sub Channel data and all. Then you use blindread ( http://www.blindread.com ) to dump an image with subchannel and everything. Then you use the fireburner to burn it. If it does not work it is because your reader/burner does not really support RAW Sub Channel Data. You can "BACKUP" Safedisc 2 this way P.S I thought you have downloaded the game or such. sorry. My mistake. Addition: Toshiba SDM-1502 DVD Rom is the most decent reader i have met. It just reads everything like most toshiba devices. as of Burners, well go for a good and reliable brand. Usually Philips & Yamaha does what it says on the Box, even a bit more that it does not say. Dunno about most plextors but had some bad experiences with them in the past both myself and customers.

Im so F****** sick of this I could almost buy a Mac!

Since your problem is hardware related i just listed the standard issues. It might not make any sense but general troubleshooting is this. Also it is my mistake since i forgot you have tried different MB's. But Nic you should try. also try the modem. Communication devices can be tricky or pain in the a**. -
What do you consider the best computer game ever made?
Uykucu replied to pr-man's topic in Slack Space
Master of Orion and and Civilization (maybe not the last one) Oh I can't forget the Doom either And Finally Day of the Tentacle and Beneath a Steel Sky as Advantures. -
Get up, walk or drive to your neares EB, Game whatever you have there. And buy a copy of the game! So it won't ask for the original CD since you already have it.

Is your wall power jack properly grounded? I know it sounds stupid but trust me. It might be a grounded jack but open it and see if there are 3 or 2 wires inside the socket/connected. HDD's very seldomly die of formatting snce formatting is pretty much the same as read/write, hence they are designed to do this. Have you seen a car that brokes down when driven? Another suspicious pece of hardware is your memory. Do you have access to some spare Dimm's? have you tryed taking out one of the modules and then the other respectively (Obviously you need some to run the machine.) I don't think heat is an issue in your case. Athlon's are pretty hot anyway but still somewhat reliable under 60-65 degrees. Also another solution/troubleshooting would be to take out your modem and NIC. and see what happens. Nic is my first suspect as troublemaker since you state it as based so it no-name. You have probably picked it up for about a fiver or so. LQ Hardware makes you nervous. Well if we can't find any solutions after all there is always Dos and Windows 3.1 -
Hi Guys. Is there a decent piece of software to do this or am i missing something on my deployment. Here is the scenario i face regularly: Small 100MB Lan (5-10 terminals) no server W2k P2P Networking with static IP's etc. They just bought Office XP and we set it up. They discover the outlook contacts and calendar and nearly always they wonder if they can share it.... I know you can assign tasks to other people and everything can be forwarded by e-mail but it is tedious work for them. Is there another way of synchronizing the contacts on all systems. Please note EXCHANGE IS NOT AN OPTION! Reason: ££££!

Outlook XP Contacts Sharing (and tasks, and journals etc.)
Uykucu replied to Uykucu's topic in Software
Well, Net Folders are not an option either since they have just bought Office XP, and backward compatible or not i can't put them on Office 2K. And since they are refusing to buy Exchange, they just have to live with only being able to play with themselves when they are not inputting contacts. Thx. Guys. -
Quote: Buy XP Pro, as the license is backward compatible with 2K anyway. It's a waste of money to buy Win2K unless it's less than 0US for the full version (which I doubt). I didn't know that. Win2k OEM is retailing at about £90 that makes roughly $140 or so (you just have to buy a new mouse or cable or something with it, not that it makes much difference). Win2k is a lot more stable since XP still needs at least 2 service packs. But in my opinion W2k fared a lot better even without the SP's. Also just remembered. WinXP Pro and Win 2k pro are about the same price +/-£5. If clutch is correct which i presume he is. do as he says. Get the XP, Run Win2K, upgrade when SP2 is out etc. BTW XP is stable but it is a pain in the *ss. Loads of HW does not have decent drivers for it. I advise against it to all my customers. It is good for games though

Hey guys we have settled this about a year ago or so with deciding to screw the LED's. What is the big deal anyway. BTW you are correct bimmerm3m5. It is because board keeps the NIC powered up in case of a wake up signal so the led stays on without activity. If APM or ACPI to set to monitor the signals etc. you know the rest. There is a ghost in my machine, it turns itself on suddenly!!! Spooky!

LAN computers with diff internet ips = slow transfer
Uykucu replied to El_Mono's topic in Networking
Why don't you stop using DHCP? I take it your 3 IP's are static. so there is absolutely no reason to use DHCP that i can think of. There are just 2 PC's. They are not gonna get to each others throat about IP allocation. If you are using a 3rd. Like a NB which regularly plugs in you can set it to use dynamic. Well Ithink anyway. -
Hey Clutch, You are right as always. My reply to Dirty harry is, Hey it might be personel computer but the fact is users are not the one paying me and they ceratinly do not pay me out of their pocket for extra time we spend at location. I sell the company (the owner) service agreement. And if we have to on site everytime someone thinks it would be better to work @2048x1536 res becuse his friend told him the other day at the pub that he works at that, i would be out of business. On top of that certain things have to be standardized or policized in a corporate network to prevent any and all future problems, and to make it cheaper for the "company" to maintain them. Another verry important point is they do not have the right to check their personnel e-mails at the company time nor do they have the luxury of jacking with icq when they should be working. That is what the Boss thinks and since he is the one putting food on my and my engineers table that is cool with me. That Computer only becomes a PC when the workers pay for it and use it for whatever they want on their off-time! It is just a workstation part of a network when the company pays for it. This is my opinion anyway. And so far I have been expanding the last 2 years continuously. So i might be doing something right;) P.S I forgot how i missed this forum stuff. Internet access in Saudi arabia and Syria was Sh*t!
-
Unfortunately I do not have the luxury of hiding my profession (No it is not spelled on my forehead) since i relly on word of mouth for new clients (mostly). But like clutch that does not stop me from saying no to friends and relatives or to present them with an invoice. An invoice usually prevents any time wasters from calling except realtives! My least favorite type of user is the one that thinks he/she know sh*t loads about a computer but does not. Try to talk them through something over the phone. Absolute nightmare. And they tend to get p*ssed when you restrict their access to certain areas. Like changing background image or the TCP/IP properties (I dunno what they would do if they could reach TCP/IP anyway but!) But i can usually get away with it saying it is the new company policy or their boss has ordered it etc. If any of you system admins, support engineers wanna have some fun, try blocking hotmail, yahoo mail etc and messenger ICQ, yahoo trio along with it. To add up more spice you may wish to disable floppy writes and certain popular addresses on the internet. They called me on my mobile at bloody 02:00 in the morning. to ask about it.

LAN computers with diff internet ips = slow transfer
Uykucu replied to El_Mono's topic in Networking
First of all, you can have multiple IP addreses for a single NIC. On W2k Go to your Local area connection properties. You can reach it by right clicking My Network places and choosing appropriate connection. Or through the control panel as always. Highlight TCP/IP and choose properties. You will see an advanced button on the lower right. Click on it. on the IP addresses i suggest you enter an internal IP with appropriate subnet (ie. 192.168.0.1 SM: 255.255.255.0) and a second IP for your router. I am presuming your IP's are static of course. Finally enter your Router's IP as gateway. You may wish to enter your ISP's DNS servers on dns tab. (DNS: Domain Name Server ) Do the same on your other Comp and you are set. of course you should not give the same internal IP to your other Comp If your IP's are dynamic, Then I suggest you define one of the machines as Gateway and let the other pick the connection through that one. I hope it helps. Let me know what happened.... -
Can you tell us which services you have turned of in return of some imaginary performance increase??? Than I can pinpoint the one you messed up

Quote: "You can just copy msconfig.exe from a Win98 or WinXP computer to your Win2K install. I never had problems when doing this. " how can you drag it over from win98 when the XP version has the ability to stop services (which you can do anyway)? Or do you just mean it will work as far as it goes? Oh Yes it will take you as far as your next recovery console session

Quote: There is also an old Windows ver of that game too. Exactly the same..except Winders. Well, if you have it then it is fine. But where to find such a priceless work of art is another question.(I am just exhausted do not mind my dramatization etc.) Quite frankly i lost my ambition for it. I have been looking for it on and off for years in UK, Germany, France wherever i go. I have even searched the "illegal" abandonware sites. No Luck whatsoever!

Cybergen, I am really surprised. No body that uses modern communication/time/contact management software will even think of what you are suggesting. You are probably not using any such SW (Outlook, Act, Lotus etc.) however, even basic knowledge of how Modern Windows software operates would have been enough to prevent you from making such "empty" suggestions.

It is not a HW problem.

I had a similar problem the other year at my parents house in istanbul. A lightning hit one of the satellite dishes in garden and apart from the melting LNB etc we had all the electronics in the house messed up. Computer especially really had it and had to be replaced. I was lucky about the HDD's though. So as an EEIE i vote for a Low intensity EMP wave caused by close proximity static discharge. (I know it sounds scientific and maybe a bit dogged but i do not know any other way of saying it.)

Quote: Yeah, it's crazy - an advert gets banned because 136 people out of millions of viewers complain... Sometimes there's such a thing as too much democracy AndyF Yeah but you don't see the other millions cogratulating about it. I mean if it is such a cool advert then we should write to ITC and demand it back! Democracy works both ways (I think). Ps I missed it since i have been away for 2 mths...

How can i a restore Perms on share map ?
Uykucu replied to VVSGAVH's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I wish i could help. Only if i could understand clearly what you were saying. do you mind trying to clear it up a bit? -
Have you installed Office 2K service Packs? and you said all versions of office. What do you mean exactly? Office 97, 2K, XP etc.? If so i think Sampson is correct on his diagnosis. U.

Himm Guys, It can be done and terribly easily that is. ADmiral LSD already told you the solution. Just install the Office XP Resource Kit from the CD and use the Save my settings wizard. I am sure you resourceful people can find it on the CD since i do not remember exact location and i am too lazy to find that out right now U.

As a matter of fact it does work. It is a bit fast though:P First you need something called VDMSound. It is a sound emulator for win NT in short (DOS sound that is). You can get it from here: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/ After installing it you run the setup. You go to the Game directory and right click on install and choose "Run with VDMS" After you set your sound card. (VDMS help files explain what settings you should choose) You run the game in the same way "Run with VDMS" colonize.bat Happy Colonization U.

Himm, I remember this problem. First of all in order to get the compatibility tab you have to create a shortcut to the executable you wish to run. Only after than you will see the necessary seetings when goto the properties of this shortcut. But unfortunately as far as i can remember this ain't gonna help you a bit. If my memory serves me right it does not work under w2k SP 1, 2 or 99 does not make any difference. However it does work under winxp, with some problems but it does in a way. (Try forcing it to full screen. W2k and Winxp has limited vesa support) What i am going to suggest is, if you like old games like i do. Just scour your local computer junkyard, computer market whatever and get yourself a nice little 486 with ISA sound card, and an awesome 4MB Vesa Compatible PCI Graphichs card. That is what i did when i got so p**sed off with crashing MOO and non working privateer. U.
