Sharing my IE 'favorites' between two Network PCs
lager_brains posted a topic in Customization & Tweaking
I have two computers on a network and I use a KVM switch box to alternate between them (they are physically side by side). Both have W2K, and my 'preferred' PC is where my IE favorites are kept (the other pc hardly has any IE favorites stored). How can I set up these PCs, so that the IE favorites on the 2nd pc point to the other machine's favorites folder ?? i.e. so that they are sharing the same 'favorites' folder for IE, so that whenever I am on one machine and I wish to add a URL to a favorite folder, the other PC will also have access to that same newly added url (in other words both favorites are 'in sync'). Is this possible ?? If so how ?? Thanks. -
Sharing my IE 'favorites' between two Network PCs

Thanks Guys, Nemesis, I'll think I'll give that a miss....I don't feel confident editing the registry (but it may help others) - but thanks anyway. Xiven, thanks - I've got TweakUI, took a look and this'll do exactly what I'm after. So thanks for pointing me there. Cheers, Jez -
I've been using W2K for a while now and recently purchased a third HD. I wished to delete W2K from the C: partition which was on the 1st HD, and install it on the new 3rd disk, but when I go through the installation procedures I cannot get C: onto the 3rd HD. The installation process always seems to take the 1st available partition (or logical drive) in the list and name THAT one as C:. How can I get around this ?? For example, when I boot up the machine, it identifies each disk as; SCSI Drive HD 6 Quantum 0 0 Seagate1 1 1 Seagate2 2 And it is the Quantum that I wish to install W2K onto. BUT when I am in W2K, the Quantum is Disk 2, Seagate1 is Disk 0, and Seagate2 is Disk 1. When I am the blue screen w2K install screen, again, the order is as I've described as above (i.e. Quantum is Disk 2, when I'd expect it to be disk 0 as described at bootup). Please help. The only other way I can think of installing W2K onto the quantum is to open up the Case and disconnect the two seagates !

Cheers Guys, Got round it by opening up that case. The Quantum (Atlas 10K II) is flying

Please can you advise me what I'm in store for, I've bought some new hardware. I've recently purchased Dual PIII 1Ghz processors (to upgrade from Dual PIII 500mhz). I've never removed these things ever before. Can someone please tell me what I'm in store for with regards to the OS. Will I need to do anything ?? Or can I just swap these babies over and W2K will boot up no problem ?? I have a SuperMicro P6DGU MB - I believe I have to change some jumper settings on the MB. Anything else ?? Thanks, Jez

I badly need some advice on this. I've been working very solidly on a project on a machine for the last few days. Dual 1ghz, 1gb Ram, 1 x Seagate Cheetah 9Gb, 1 x 18Gb SCSI Seagate Cheetah etc etc. In W2K, in 3DS Max R4, went to save the file, and the application said, 'error writing to file'. So I went to the Autobackup directory (in explorer)where the software saves a backup every ten minutes and tried to click on the backup file so that I could rename the extention to the .max file extension (autobackups are just extended .mx). When I clicked on it, 'explorer' failed seriously, and said that I'd need to restart the application. Well, to get to the point, I cannot EVEN single click on the autobackup file in explorer (though I can single click on other files in that directory). When I try to do so, explorer fails. And the ORIGINAL file that I was working on in 3DSmax has disappeared I have the latest Antivirus from Mcafee and I have latest BlackIce as well. I have a laptop on this little network, but even this machine does NOT like this file in the Autobackup directory (just single clicking on the file from the laptop causes the laptop to have a fit in Explorer. I'm guessing that either; I have a very new virus, Or 3DSMax R4 has done a great job of corrupting my file structure (could be possible becuase I have noticed taht Max R4 is quite buggy), OR my machine has overheated on the harddisk (not likely because it has a fan running over it - IonStorm). Any ideas.......

Thanks Clutch, I'm going to post some messages at Discreet's messageboard, see if others have had similar problems.

Please before anyone else cries (or says anything) ...... I did have a 'previous' autobackup file that I could open and continue working from but this error has caused me a delay of around 2 hours (in a VERY tight schedule). 8)

W2K, 1GB of ram, dual 1ghz processors. I'm finding that for example when I open up photoshop 6, it takes up around 30mb of ram. Then I start opening up some small jpgs (each less than 800kb) around 15 of them and the memory usage (in taskbar) goes up to 300mb !! 8) Then I open up 3DS Max, it takes around 60mb of ram, and you can ONLY open ONE file at a time with Max, so I'm playing with ONE file, NOT a big file at all, take a look in Task Manager and it has taken a chunk of 300mb as well 8) What is going on ?? Can I do anything to fix this or is this normal ?? BTW, it cannot be normal, because if I close all the files in Photoshop and just leave the application open, it still says 300mb Any comments ?? Thanks, Jez

This may sound like a really stupid question but here goes.... I'm getting to the stage where I need to start seriously thinking about backing up my system. But I don't have or want to buy a tape drive. Someone suggested I buy a ide harddisk for the purpose of backups and I was going to buy one anyway so this could be good .... I'm particularly fed up of when reinstalling w2k (after a reformat) that I then spend over a day reinstalling all my software (I have a lot of software). Can anyone tell me what would I need to back up so that in the event of reformatting my harddrive (which'd wipe off the os), and reinstalling W2K, I'd be able to reinstate my software without reinstalling all my software all over. I like to keep the OS and Software on seperate partitions (C: & S: respectively). I also don't want to buy any backup software would 'Backup' (in Accessories - I think) - be good enough ?? Many thanks (and I hope my question makes sense !), Jez

New processors, what do I need to do ??
lager_brains replied to lager_brains's topic in Customization & Tweaking
To give you an idea of the performance increase this gives, I did some tests before I transferred the new processors. 3D Studio Max - Test Render; With Dual 500 PIII - 26minutes 8 seconds. With Dual 1Ghz PIII - 12minutes I couldn't believe it myself - over 50% performance increase. Machine has 512mb. Upgrade to 1Gb RAM arrives tomorrow. Spent today transferring all everything into a Supermicro 760 full tower case (which is fantastic). 8) -
New processors, what do I need to do ??
lager_brains replied to lager_brains's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Hi Brian, Received an email from Supermicro, apparently I don't have to do a thing 'External jumpers and BIOS settings are not used by Coppermine processors. The CPU multiplier leads are hardwired internally and no external inputs are used at all.' I also checked out Intel's website and they explain removal and installation of these processors. Thanks, Jez -

Upgrading my PIII processors, advise please.
lager_brains replied to lager_brains's topic in Hardware
Thanks EM. Supermicro have gotten back to me and told me I don't need to do a thing. I bought 100fsb because SuperMicro told me if I didn't, my PC would run real slow. Now, if I can just figure out HOW to remove and reinstall these processors Jez -
New processors, what do I need to do ??
lager_brains replied to lager_brains's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Thanks Brian, Do I not need to change the 'Core/Bus' Ratio (jumpers on the MB) ?? Supermicro have sent me the jumper settings but (and I am VERY new to this) their list only goes up to x9.5 (FSB100). Does this mean that I'd have to change the jumper settings to x9.5 which'd mean that my processors will only be performing at 950mhz ?? Jez -
Device\Scsi\Aic78u21 did not respond within the timeout peri
lager_brains posted a topic in Software
Please can anyone help me solve this problem. I am convinced my scsi devices are not operating as quickly as they used to when I first bought this machine (2 years ago). Dual PIII 500Mhz, 512Mb Ram, Supermicro P6DGBU (onboard Adaptec SCSI controller 2940, AHA-2940U2/U2W), Seagate Cheetah 9Gb SCSI (ST39102LW) Seagate Cheetah 18Gb SCSI (ST318203LC) Plextor PX-40TS SCSI Cd-rom, Yamaha CRW4416S SCSI Cd-rom, Epson Expression SCSI Scanner, W2K, SP1, NT4, SP6a, 2 fans. I've noticed that when there are cds in one or both drives, then on startup the machine takes longer to identify the SCSI ids for all the devices. Any idea why I get loads of these messages in Event Viewer; "The device, \Device\Scsi\aic78u21, did not respond within the timeout period. " (Event ID9). "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation. " (Event ID51). "The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block. " (Event ID7). I run Diskeeper frequently (not that I am convinced that this does much). Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Many Thanks, Jez -

I upgraded my Office 2000 Premium with the latest service packs (1 and then 2) and I've not noticed that I cannot SAVE or OPEN an attachment. When I try to save an attachment, the first funny thing I notice is that it doesn't list the name of the file (I have to type it in) and when I do type in the name and hit enter it says 'Outlook cannot save the URL to a file. Path does not exist. make sure that the path is correct'. What ??? Firstly, I am trying to save a zip file (not a URL). Secondly the Path DOES exist. I am using W2K and I have the latest Antivirus checkers/DAT files. Finally, if I try to OPEN the file it then opens Explorer at the System32 folder (but doesn't seem to do a lot there). Please Help !! Regards, jez 8)

Toby, Reinstalled Office - didn't take as long as I expected (around 35mins). Read this AFTER I'd read all the Microsoft stuff..... Office 2000 Service Pack 2 (Woody's Office Watch)
-
Hi Toby, I think I'll have to leave it for now, it'll take more than a couple of minutes, I have to uninstall Office Premium and then reinstall it all over again (I don't know what that'd do to my favourites, my contacts, my current emails, my templates, etc etc). I'm naffed off with Microsoft, why can't they a) make SP-2 removable, explain just a BIT clearer that these sorts of things will happen (not that I am sure that they ARE MEANT TO happen). Now I cannot attach ANYTHING and send it via email....... And I cannot save or open ANYTHING that I receive as an attachment via Outlook 2000. Nice One Microsoft.

Thanks Guys, I've downloaded WinRAR, executed it and 'even' restarted my machine, but the problem still exists. I have put zip;ZIP;.zip in the list of level 1 attachments to be removed and yet I still cannot save Toby's zip file attachment to my harddisk. Sob sob...... :
-
Toby, You've sent me a file called; 'Outlook AttachmentFix.rar'. I don't know what to do with this file and no rar file extension exists on my machine. Please could you send me some instructions !! Thanks, Jez
-
I've now learnt that SP-2 is the culprit. BUT I don't understand why; a) it won't let me save a ZIP file (zip files aren't in the level 1 list) it won't let me attach files which I would have thought safe to send. AAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGHHHH !!!!!
