Exactly True , but it's harder to manually setup DNS n config it right, at least for him at the moment , so I recommended to auto install with A.D. else u r right . But one thing I want to ask, without A.D. U can't install A.D. integrated DNS , Does A.D. install, convert it to integrated one ?

For me the easiest way to install DNS is installing Active Directory run - dcpromo.exe n AD install will begin, also it will ask n install dns for u too. 4 things I can tell u to do by order. 1- if there is a dns running on at the moment , remove it. 2- enter your internal nics own ip to dns as well at tcp/ip properties. 3- To avoid conflicts u better use a domain name like xxx.yyy.com using in a yyy.com format will be trouble for 98 clients, bc if there is yyy.com running on the net, they can't resolve the external ip but the internal one, so they won't be able to browse it. 4- After installing AD n reboot, go to DNS managament via mmc n remove the "." zone . It's a root zone but u r not a root dns server so to enable dns forward u have to delete it. After u delete it u can enable forwarders n enter your ips's dns there. hope could help.

wess cool down. No need to turn back to NT 4 . As I see u installed w2k adv srv but u didn't install active directory , also u don't have DNS service yet. I dunno if 95 supports DNS but if u can upgrade those 95 clients to 98 or newer n install active directory ( it will install also DNS service) u will be ok. Of course AD is not easy also not so hard but u better check some articles before u go.

Hello, Having a weird problem. To play with exchange 2000 got a domain name as computheque.com. The company holds the name also gives free dns service. I'm using cable to access to net via nic. When I enter computheque.com as FQDN at active directory install, it skips DNS install. That only happens if I use computheque.com with other names it asks to install DNS . Ok I can unplug my modem for a while but this is not the solution to go I suppose Also lemme add, install domain as xxx.com but let exchange run with zzz.com is ok ? yeah it would work but how ok is this ? tia Ozgur

As it's mentioned above, why don't u use DNS ? U have DC so u have DNS running on that server. I have the same network, near 35 98 clients n w2k srv as DC . All the clients have DNS enabled n using server's ip as DNS ip . No problem with network or such. If I'm missing some reason for u to not use dns , I'm sorry. Else if u can do it soon , it works without problem .

Thxs for the replies all Yeah I have to read n learn a lot n a lot , I know that. I'm not after a short way to learn all those (lol impossible) n not I have few experience with AD n exchange , n no with sql My only stand point is they didn't have a IT or such before, so I will learn with them n yes they will send me to MCSE course next month, probably 350 hours or such. Now from all your points , I came up with this : 1 - SQL : server (even not a client AV , bc there won't be any sharing or such, only the proggy clients use will reach the database, nothing but nothing will ruun on it, so as I assume even a virus spread there it's low possibility tý hurt the srv) warn me if I'm wrong 2 - Exchange , nat , firewall : server . Now we don't have cable or dsl yet. Both ISP's say won't take more than 2 months for the service but for that 2 months my only choice is dialup , n as I know if I keep exchange behind , it doesn't run. So exchange should dial n connect to net directly. I will use Sybari for echange. Warn me again if I'm wrong. 3 - norton AV , file , backup : server I will let norton update the clients , also scan the sql server at nights , when sql won't be serving. I will keep ppl documents at that srv n enable the real time protection. at the moment company won't afford to pay for tape backup. So I plan to schudele n backup sql database n exchange files to here n burn them again warn me if I'm wrong I will keep those servers here at home for 2 weeks n a client , n will check anything I notice will ask for help n for last I assume keeping AD at third server is better , but not sure for this again , need your opinion tia

Guyz, I'm a rookie IT now, I'm lucky I got a job with that little knowledge n without certificate At the moment I have one server n 37 clients. Server is serving SQL 7.0 , that all the clients n things going on that. Some fool tried to install exchange n antivirus to same srv , lol now , I have 3 new server (ok not srv but will be used as) each config is same, AMD XP2000+ Chaintech 7sid sis735 (rock solid n no problems) ram : 1 srv 1 gb , other 2 512 mb DDR 60gb 7200 western intel pro100/s n things I2m gonna serve : SQL 7.0 Exchange 2000 Norton antivirus enterprise Firewall (dunno yet what to use) a domain srv with AD file n backup NAT each srv will be w2k server Now I need opinions as which thing should run with which. I will leave SQL alone . Should I run Exchange with Domain srv or not ? should NAT be on domain ? which one should connect to net n other 2 stay internal ... I'm lost hehe pls help

Return value (1722). searched for it n found I may have a problem with User rights Assignment at srv but couldn't find a problem there also a bud told : ( Another thing might be, because remember how I talked about SIDS in the domain and just giving a computer the same name doesn't make it match anything when it was already there? Sometimes goofey **** like this can be fixed by removing the computer from the domain, putting it in a workgroup with the same name as the domain, rebooting, then re-adding it to the domain again to resynchronize all SIDS. Then go through the permissions in question and reapply them again.) didn't try that yet but will tomorrow , it's 3 am here now but the weird part is, I'm running a domain srv more than a month , reinstalled many times n didn't have that problem , I just started to have it after I change the internal nic on srv I was using 3com to 3com , now srv has a intel nic to communicate with 3com that's on my client I suppose bc those new intel nics have hardware ip security thing that creates the problem maybe intel to intel wouldn't anyway as a last chance I will change it with 3com again tomorrow than QoS is waiting for me sister will be suprised some lol

thx for reply Clutch now there is 2 worse position , 1- sister is using srv , bc I change my client hardware always, also overclock, can't run srv on my pc 24/7 2- she d/l's using Morpheus n Edonkey , so no ftp or www now even if I had a solution without QoS , I want to learn QoS else will feel like it beated me lol will spend the week if I have to , will read all I can find but before lemme ask in a network like that small with 2 pc would I get any benefit using NAT for internet sharing ? (also my icq on client can't receive file, may ip forwarding can work with icq too?) if NAT can help in some areas, also with QoS I will use it , if not will jump it for now so that's the only question for now , than my learning begins with mstech n help files I hope I can do it , will share it with u guyz when I do it not as asx flattering but thxs all who replies n tries to help eachother here , those helps are priceless

I checked help for QoS again this time I installed QoS Admission control service, from there I saw what I'm looking for if I didn't see wrong QoS actually can limit any client n user, looks cool BUT , dunno rest n what to do also as said at help installed QoS packet schudeler to client but will I install that to my 2 nic at srv ? as a result couldn't work it but I hope someone can light me at this point my network knowledge is very low but I got my second pc just for to learn network so that's what I try to do nowadays I don't push myself so hard nowadays but learning everyday just need to leave that genetic lazy part of me

how can I put total d/l limit for client n also for spesific user ? problem is , I have cable here but just the name is cable, my max d/l is 15 kb, as u may guess, sometimes sister logs in n kills all the bandwith with stupid things, also father connects laptop again sometimes, if both come together, my all fxp's stop , in a way I have to put speed limit or at worst balance the bandwith in equal parts . dunno anything as how to about this any suggestions pls pc connected to outside is running w2k srv thxs

Palos if this cd will be used only one pc u r right but what if my hardware changes always ? or use this cd for other fresh systems ? of course with their license anyway thx for reply twolfson, u can't use ghost from inside of w2k u have to boot with diskette n than run ghost.exe also if u will ghost ntfs look for version 7
