I'll see what I have and send it to you clutch it may take me a few days to get it there...
-
if you have installed it again and it doesnt improve, I would make sure that you have all of the latest drivers for all of your hardware. some NIC cards had some issues early on with 2K I believe the 3com 905c was one of them there were a few others as well I just cant remember any of them.

I am capable of writing howto's as well if you need extra help.

I have a pretty comprehensive list of WKP if anyone wants it. and also isnt 6667-6669 usuallly used for IRC and Napster and stuff of that nature?
-
jdulmage you are a tester? for M$? and you claim you know all. Isn't that how you start out in the industry? In my experience most QA people are jackasses that dont know what the hell they are talking about(otherwise they would be programmers). But I guess you could be the exception. Just my first impression of you loud mouth.

I got ME running fine the instability was caused by mediaplayer7. On some machines it does have some problems. Especially if you use any SiS chipsets it doesn't like onboard video that much. So I think the real issue is ME doesn't like inexpensive computer equipment. It was never intended to be an upgrade it was going to be an OEM and they weren't even going to release it for a little while. Hey and JJ someone isnt stupid becuase they dont understand this stuff. The only thing that means is, they dont know about computers. Judging someones intellegence based one one subject is rather immature, wouldnt you say? If everyone is dumb in your world then you need to open your bedroom door and go outside where the rest of the world functions. I mean I could probably ask you a few things about computers that you wouldn't know. Am I right? I dont want you to get all excited and think I'm flaming you. Just making suggestions.

sorry starman a friend of mine is goin through the same sh*t right now with his admin. The story just sounded real familiar. As far as AUP I don't make anyone sign anything unless their manager complains to me that every time they walk by he\she cube they are on the internet and they dont get their work done. This way the first is a verbal warning to let them know we know they are abusing privis, and we want them to sign something now to say they wont do it anymore. The second after the agreement has been breached they get the boot(I've never had to implemnt this policy). This is the same way I deal with telecommuting. I know some admins enforce policies because of security issues. I dont feel that it causes a real threat to me because of the security measures that have been taken. I feel for your friend man that is a sh*tty way to go. Like I said before time to refer to him as "The Internet Nazi"

Hey thanks for the link clutch and yes you have to register to get there but its free.

Starman- Sounds like an internet nazi to me. I'm an admin for a company, my view on it is that its not my place to tell people that they can or cannot surf the internet. The only way I will get involved with someones internet surfing is if their manager complains to me then we implement the acceptable use rules. I dont strictly adhear to them. A session may be what is referred to as a browser session when you open the browser and use it to browse sites it records your trails. Most likely when they are talking about proxy stuff. Your admin probably has a squid box. What's a squid you ask? Well, let me tell you its a box that all internet requests go thru and return to so it will populate its cache with sites you go to. Really what this is designed for is, to speed browse speeds up by having the cached info much closer(less hops). So it can return it faster. Because it stores this info it is possible to review anywhere the user went times, dates, etc. Sorry for the over simplified explaination. A hit probably is referring to how many pages were loaded or how many pages he reached. Yes sorry to say it is a very accurate way of measuring usage. I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say page view impressions. Could be because I'm stupid though. To be honest this sounds like a situation a friend of mine is dealing with. I really wouldnt push the admin around too much he is just a control freak and there is nothing you can really do about it. If he is taking it up a level he probably has loads of logs to back his side of the story up. So be prepared to fight with a guy that already hates people. I would just openly start calling him an internet nazi everytime you see him. Moniker Im betting you work for a video game company right starman? and your first name may even start with a st

"oh yeah, it don't take brains to be in the IT business, anyone can do it" Vampyr- You make me laugh kid, would you care to have a knowledge battle. Please, don't trivialize something which is beyond your scope of comprehension, It shows your ignorance. Also, if you want to degrade somebody or something it helps if you use proper grammar and spelling, it adds to your credibility. I guess double negatives impress no one. Now my opinion of ME is: If you uninstall MediaPlayer 7 it is more stable then 9x ever was, out of the box that is. Brian- Linux is open source man it moves as fast as its developers(which is everyone). As a matter of fact you can build your own distro of linux if you want. Cheers -Moniker ******edit****** P.S. Vampyr if you need help getting your linux distro to work right drop me a line and I can help you. [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 28 March 2001).]

I seriously hope developement doesn't stop. If it does they will be doing exactly what apple did to themselves years ago. I'm actually upset that 2K is being replaced so quickly as well. I just upgraded recently and I'm starting to get everything to work the way it is suppose to. If dev does stop 2k will be the last OS purchase I make from M$ as it will be the last straw for me. I think that 2K is alot more stable then NT was and really see no need to replace it. XP is not my cup. I have run it on a few machines that I have around for non-production testing. I have to say I'm not impressed at all. Other then a few silly little features and some new skins I dont see a whole lot of reasons for me to upgrade. on the other hand I think that XP hit it's target market right on the nose People that want something to replace the bastard child that is referred to as ME. I think that it is great for games it is alot more stable then any 9x variation. It also is good for your typical home user that is only interested in using the PC for browsing. As far as from my perspective as an admin I dont like it and won't be switching anytime soon. *****edit***** Oh ya and M$ better get their a$$ on it and come out with sp2 [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 28 March 2001).]

My opinion of the flame wars probably doesn't matter much to you guys but, here is my suggestion anyways. I would suggest that you act professional even if someone tries to draw you into a flame war. I have seen a couple of your posts where it looks like people intentionally pulled you into one. I know what are you suppose to do when you spot a troller? Let them troll. If your intrest is to keep it professional, dont let yourself be dragged into a shouting match, with no real resolution. They came in with the intention of starting a flame war. So if you don't respond they aren't getting what they want, and, will proceed to leave. This is all just IMHO of course -cheers Moniker [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 28 March 2001).]

Thats a great link clutch for all who dont know about the tools they have at their disposal.

INFERNO2000- you are absolutely right. Thank you for correcting me. We wouldnt want to misinform anyone. I guess I better start confirming stuff before I ramble things off. I changed it in my post so if people read it they wont be "cornfused" -moniker

that would do it. must be nice

Im going to have to agree with HarU. I work in a Unix/NT/2K environment. One of my workhorse 2K servers has been up for a little over 6 mo.*hang on* to be exact 197 days 6 hours and some minutes. with no reboot and its running a ton of apps from the server to emulation clients. So I would say when setup properly tehy work ok. Just arent as configurable.. -Moniker

I know there were some problems with some 3Com cards and win98se(something for you to look into). Also there were some issues with one of those linksys routers(something 701)*I think*(I would look into that as well). To be honest though it sounds to me like your are having a browsing issue. *It sounds like* one machine wont broadcast the resources it has available after a certain amount of time. I know that 2k had an issue with its browser service falling off after 15 minutes of what it *percieves* to be idle time. The only reason I say it sounds like a browser issue is, that, it only happens on large file transfers. ***had to edit bad spelling*** [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 26 March 2001).]

Just wanted to make a few other points clear just for informations sake Differences between hub/switch, switch/router HUB- Works on the Physical layer of the OSI(open systems interconnect). It works by re-broadcasting all packets passed through it to every wire on the network until another physical interface(transiever on your NIC) accepts the packet. So, the action is: computer sends broadcast to hub; Hub takes it, re-broadcasts it out to entire network; recieving computer (matching address) accepts packet. SWITCH- Works on Data Link Layer of OSI. The switch actually analyzes the packet header retrieves the address and broadcasts the signal to just that computer. Action: PC sends broadcast to switch; switch breaks the packet down and looks at the destination header; switch re-encapsulates packet(leaving the originating address) sends it to destination address only. PC accepts packet. ROUTER- a router works on the Network level of the OSI. The main difference between a router and a switch, at least the one you should be concerned with is.. When the router gets to the section where it is analyzing the packet and reading the destination address, it checks against its table of routes(gee wiz Capt. Obvious strikes again). It then finds the fastest route to its destination address and sends it that way(doesnt just blindly send it to that address). Another difference in a router is, when a packet passes through it and it is re-routed, it goes through a re-encapsulation stage like a switch. The difference is when it leaves the router it has the routers address on it as the source address. Hope this will clear some stuff up for you. -cheers Moniker [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 27 March 2001).]

Quote: Originally posted by mthaler: Pardon my ignorance, but which cache are you talking about, and how do I clear it out? Are we talking about the cache on the server or the workstation that is slow logging in? Is there a way of telling it NOT to store massive amounts of data on the server that needs to be compared and downloaded each time? Thanks The command I believe clutch is speaking of is C:\>arp -a <----will show you current entries C:\>arp -d <----will clear entries C:\>arp -d 192.xxx.xxx.xxx <----will delete specific entries(substitute the ip entry you want) C:\>arp /? <----will tell you all variables and switches you can use with command *****edit***** It also sounds like you may be having broadcast problems (an out of control NIC). Does your network access improve once its logged on? Or, is it always slow? [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 26 March 2001).]

No, I dont this is a fresh machine I'm trying it with. I have other things running on other servers so I cant chance screwing them up with some obscure registry setting. I finally got an error to come up in the log and I think I may be on to something. I just have to do the research and try the fixes Ill post when I have more info (may be tommorrow or monday). Thanks for your help so far... -Moniker

Ive tried it with multiple machines. So I guess I've already done that as well what I'm doing at the moment is enabling advanced logging for specific things hoping it will record some events to enable advanced logging for those who dont know regedt32>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Diagnostics hopefully I get something from this... I appreciate all the suggestions youve given so far it seems we are both thinking on about the same track. So if you come up with any other suggestions please post them. Thanks in advance.... ****EDIT**** for values on setting up logging in the regisrty 0=none 1=minimum 3=medium 5=maximum [This message has been edited by Moniker (edited 24 March 2001).]

Yes, the server is already in the domain and has a valid machine account. Ive tried resetting the machine account thinking that maybe the SID just didnt match(for some reason fell out of sync)but I tried that and had no luck with it. I have tried dcpromo while it was included in the domain and while it was just logged on to the local machine. I havent tried it from no domain account(workgroup)to directly coming in as a DC. My first inclination was to try the account@domain.com and the good old DOMAIN\account neither of them worked. My eyes are constantly drawn back to the "MACHINE$ account" error. I've been reading as much as I can on AD as well but havent't found anything as of yet that could explain it. The worst of it is it won't even spawn any type of error in the logs that could at least give me something to look at.

have you run into any issues with your admin account not being able to promote members to DC's or any problem at promoting machines at all? It just keeps complaining about the machine account and I've tried a number of things but to no avail. If you have had any issues along the way could you let me know, as they could point me where I need to go. I can also provide info on problems I've encountered and the solutions I've found so far. Thanks for your help in advance. -Moniker
