Clutch I don't think it is a name resolution issue if a workstation is hanging on loading personal settings. Personal settings is loading a user profile up mainly. That is what is lagging here. It's the workstation and he only has a 10 station network, so static IP assignment is easy. Obviously you don't want to staticize a huge network (lots of work..phew I get sick thinking about it). I think it is a user profile or something that is messed up. If it is indeed a name resolution issue then what kind of OS you have around network cause I need more info to start troubleshooting.

LOL! Why you get so mad Brian? Don't be posting that you can't get it to work then turn around and say something else! I run whatever OS I please be it Windows 9x, Me, NT, 2k Pro, 2k Server, Linux, or whatever. I never say that they suck cause I get them going. Well maybe you should program the ROM based OS (if you can call it that) on a fancy calculator or something. That is a flash and go procedure. MS markets like everyone else that Windows is plug and pray, easy to upgrade (just throw the disc in and it goes) yeah right! That's why they call it uh...marketing. To like uh....make money. Stop getting all mad and whining you baby. Not my fault you can't get it to work!

Only had 1 bad IBM drive out of like 5. 1:5 ratio is not good or bad I guess. Oh well, had a major electrical issue. Freaking thing would fry whatever mobo I hooked it up to. Weird, huh? Took me 3 mobos to figure that out. IBM took good care of me and sent me out a way better model and alot bigger one too! Good luck! Maxtor drives sucks...but REAL BAD from my experiences on performance and reliability...but that's my humble experience and GOD knows it is alot!

Ouch! This is a mother man! I don't know, but how the hell your CPU going to assign NT 4.1 (A) and NT 4.0 ( and Win 98? I don't think that is wise and why in the hell you have it setup that way? Why two NT 4.0 partitions on 2 different disks. Like you have server on one then workstation on other or something? If you are using two servers or two workstations with NT 4 then forget it. Also it is going to want to know via BIOS what Disk you want to boot from. DISK ID 0 or DISK ID 1. You have to specify which bootdisk and this is where your problem exists man. Won't work without manually specifying via BIOS your boot disk or using a fancy pants IDE switch which I have seen for like 80.00 dollars! IDE switch idea sucks anyway! Switch it via BIOS and forget the boot.ini setup cause it won't work if it is not switched in BIOS! How else your CPU going to know what disk to boot from? Like BIOS goes uh......I think I'll boot form primary boot device...oh yeah cool there is an NT partition there to boot from and it boots from that. If nothing is there it goes....uh.....can't boot....uh let's try secondary boot device...cool there is an NT and a Win 98 partition. What do you want to boot from? That's when you get your choice man. Have to specify primary boot disk and secondary boot disk and this has nothing to do with master/slave and/or primary/secondary IDE, ok? It is PRIMARY/SECONDARY BOOT DEVICES! Usually like floppy, HDD 0, HDD 1, CD-ROM, SCSI etc.. There can be many types of boot devices depending on what you got and what your BIOS supports!

Easy man. If it is lagging loading up a profile then optimize all the profiles by eliminating the garbage or asking your users to do so, then defragging your disk. Clean all temp garbage out. Assign static IP across a 10 user network and disable DHCP to decrease "look time". If you are using a router just default gateway to that and assign those static IP's and boom that sucker will fire up quick. Minimize the number of services you don't need too! Kill it if not needed. Go in BIOS and tweak your hardware performance out. Tweak out NIC card and set at 100 w/o the autoswitch. All kinds of stuff you can do man! My Advanced Server lags a little too, but there is a default look time on preparing network connections you really can't do too much about and I wouldn't mess with that part that would probably make things worse if anything. Too much work on a server OS anyway. Try these suggestions out and see if boosts your boot time.

Also get your Detonator drivers up to par (date) and verify your video card BIOS! Give me more info and I'll hook you up quick on what it is doing. Do this stuff first OK.

Easy to fix....first off get your A7V BIOS up to 1007. It fixes a few comaptibility issues. Next, go through your BIOS and make sure you know what the heck things are and how to set them up. If you don't put it all on auto ad verify all settings. Update your ECSD. Test it. If it fails...could be all kinds of stuff. I need more info before I can give you more advice, but this is a damn good place to start. Let us know and we'll fix this up like REAL QUICK! Post here!

The point is this. Let me dictate it for you cause "God forbid" (borrowing from anonymous of course: Brian) you have to actually update something like your BIOS. Dude if you can't even update your BIOS and device drivers and do not do so on a regular basis cause it is too much work......THEN STOP MESSING WITH COMPUTERS NOW! THIS IS OBVIOUSLY BEYOND YOUR ABILITIES! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BELIEVE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. DANGER! DANGER! If you can't even flash your BIOS and update device drivers, then I can hardly figure out how you got your computer working at all. You must have just put the CD-ROM called "WINDOWS" in and prayed. No doubt, I believe Win 2k is a superior OS. Win Me soesen't suck though. For it's OS type it is a great OS. No comparison (to me anyway) between the 2 as far as performance, but all this "sucks this and that" is merely opinion anyway. Based on my experiences it is OK. I mainly use Win 2k Pro/Adv. Server, I have yet to really install XP, but there is a newer build out today anyway. Have to know where to get it before I can take a peek. Build is like 26xxa now or something. Brian sorry if I offend you here, but Win Me is cool for the 9x kernel. That's just it! It is 9x kernel based, so of course it has it's advantages and drawbacks. SO does NT!

Dude, relax. Lots of info, but what were doing here is "bouncing all over the place". I have had literally over 20 people tell me that Win Me sucks, but guess what? I have gotten it working and stable for everyone of them. If there is an issue it may be a single application once in a while, but 99.9 % of them time I have found it is their configuration be it hardware, bios, device drivers, IRQ setup etc. Yeah, if Win 2k works for you then great, but like you said it does not support everything. I use both anyway and a variety of other OS's. I love it when people tell me something sucks, because I know that 90 % of the time I can fix it, and they say...uh...oh..well....and I say yeah whatever man..it's cool...don't sweat it. I'm a little cocky, so don't let it bother you. I have good reason to be, but we won't go into that. Win Me I have found is a great OS, it just takes some experience and possibly some patience. What OS don't you have to have this with? When they get it right let me know, eh? Give me your hardware setup and I'll give you the advice. Depends on YOUR level of pride to try it out. Like I said, it sucks when people say uh...oh..uh...but it was like and this that. It can't be that hard man. It is just Win 98 with a different GUI and a few additonal features. Basic to setup regardless of hardware and I have setup some freakin' legacy systems on it man. Crazy old stuff that just meets the requirements and like some driver for stuff from like 1995. LOL! Let me know if you need some help. That's great you can tell me a bunch of stuff that really doesen't pertain to the issue, but what is it exactly that is causing you issues in Win Me. Be specific before you go on a generalized rant that has nothing to do with your issues. Why does it suck specifically man? What doesen't work. What happens?

Joosman, Your OK, ALI and Via are both good chipsets. AMD rocks, but DO NOT buy a KT 133 chipset cause the FSB settings suck! Can't overclock much! KT133A is OK though. I like that Asus A7A266 which uses either SDRAM or DDR RAM. It is out, but not readily availbale at alot of places YET! Like 2 weeks. Also I hear the Iwill and the Abit KT7A are good, but go with the ALI chipset. They are much better and have higher fault tolerance from what I hear. Can Overclock for days try like a 155 or higher FSB setting. LOL! Tell that to those Intel junkies. Anyway all I can say is JJ is rolling along rock solid stable at 1.45 GHZ on a 1.2 266 FSB T-Bird. Beats out...more like freaking blows away the 1.5 P4 in every bench except memory. Who cares anyway? Like there are even apps that take advantage of it yet. Believe me man I have some decent experience. There is no perfect choice just sometimes a better one. Good luck.

Update all of your BIOS' be it motherboard and video card etc., have updated drivers ready for everything. FDISK then format the drive after backup. Install Win 98. Then fully update Win 98 via Windows update @ microsoft.com. Load your "new" drivers up too for everything including your mobo chipset drivers the latest ones. Do not install any applications yet. After doing all that. It takes awhile, then upgrade to Win ME. After it updates, then go back and reapply Win Me updates via microsoft.com WIndows update. Clean all temp files etc. out of C:\Windows\Temp. Defrag after done. Now reboot and then start installing your applications. After you finish you should defrag again. Voila! You are ready to rock and roll! Everything fully updated and Win Me is rock solid and fully stable. You can't just go in sticking this and that wherever man. What do you think your CPU is a freaking calculator? LOL! ANyway, try it I bet it works. Lots of work, but well worth it. Good luck. Never just stick in and upgrade. You should know that by now. Always do a clean install whenever possible after backing and and preparing for it.
