Have ZoneAlarm running as a firewall. It keeps popping-up with a request from a "Generic Host Processor for Win32" to access the net. Can't find anything under Google regarding this. Is this something I should allow access to the net on a regular basis, if at all?

Changing networked hard drive name?
SnapperOne replied to SnapperOne's topic in Customization & Tweaking
adamvjackson Once again, your suggestion worked. But, once again, Win2K is throwing me a new curve. Now, whenever I attempt to access system #1 from system #2, I am prompted to "Enter Network Password". Never had this before. Don't know where to look to disable the prompt. We're trying to run a simple 2-PC LAN behind a LinkSys router and ZoneAlarm on both PCs; and, while it may be a poor security decision, we'd really like to use the two machines without passwords. No MS-Office icons or "Start\New Office Document"
SnapperOne replied to SnapperOne's topic in Software
AlecStaar Tried "Repair". Didn't work. But, I think I may not have correctly explained what I'm trying to have show up when I click "Start". Before I installed the new hard drive (and as it still occurs on another PC of ours), when we clicked on "Start", in space above "Programs" there was a shortcut to "New Office Document". When we clicked on this, a large multi-tabbed box would open that would allow us to start any new Office project......word processing, spreadsheet, etc..... This "master box" eliminated the need to have multiple short-cuts cluttering the "Start" button. SnapperOne -
Changing networked hard drive name?
SnapperOne replied to SnapperOne's topic in Customization & Tweaking
adamvjackson Whoops..........followed your instructions, entered a correct PC-name, rebooted as instructed by Win2000 and, TA DA, a new PC ("BasementPC") shows up in "Computer near me". The only problem is, the old PC still shows up as well. Did I forget to do something? SnapperOne -
Changing networked hard drive name?

adamvjackson - re: "Yes I am a geek"....... From someone who is as far from being a "geek" as you can get, I notice that, when a non-geek's system goes kaboom, I don't hear my phone ringing off-the-hook. So, Geeks, thanks sincerely for all the info' you make available. If we had to count on the Microsoft's and Iomega's of the world, we'd all be screwed with out you. SnapperOne -
Had a new HD installed by a local computer shop. Due to a problem with an application unrelated to the HD install, I have been directed to start the system using my old Win98 Boot Disk. Currently running Win2000Pro SP-3 as my OS. When I attempt to start the PC with the "98" Boot Disk installed in Drive "A" (a 1.44M / 120M Super Disk), it appears the system no longer looks to the floppy, at any time during the boot sequence, for information. The system appears to go to one of my CDs first, then directly to the HD. I know there's a way to change the boot sequence to include the floppy, but I can't for the life of me remember where or how. nebulus - Thanks for the reply. Didn't know you could make a boot-CD. Are there any potential problems setting a system up that way? I thought you were always supposed to go to a floppy first during the boot sequence, just in case there was a problem with the CD or HD. (System info for a follow-up question: PIII, 512M, 30G Primary master, 12G Primary slave, SuperDisk floppy, Win2000Pro/SP3) I was able to change the boot sequence from: 1st: ATAPI CDROM, 2nd: IDE-HDD, 3rd: Disabled. The first time around, I changed it to 1st: Floppy, 2nd: ATAPI CDROM, 3rd: IDE-HDD, but got a boot error. Can't remember the error message at the moment. The second time, I changed the sequence to 1st: ARMD-FDD, 2nd: ATAPI CDROM, 3rd IDE-HDD. This seems to boot properly, until I get to the Desktop, when Windows wants to run the "Found new hardware" proceduce, adding a (nonfunctional) Floppy "B". Floppy "A", the SuperDisk, continues to work properly, reading both 1.44 as well as 120M floppy disks. Here's the question. How do I stop Windows from adding the non-existant Floppy B? When I "unistall" it using the Control Panel's "Remove Hardware" procedure, Windows just reinstalls it the next time I boot. Or, rather than chasing this problem (other than to learn), if there is no potential boot problem using a bootable CD, am I just better off returning to the orignal boot sequence; i.e....CDROM then HD? Thanks..........SnapperOne

General message to all concerned - GoBack / Roxio is apparently having some difficulty with something within Win2000, Service Pack 3, or "?". After performing a "boot-time" defrag of both drives using DiskKeeper 7.X, I was finally able to install GoBack 3 Delux. It would not, however boot properly; rebooting, and rebooting continuously, on its own, without ever getting fully into Windows. GoBack is aware of the problem, asking that I forward something called a Pinfo.pxt and .nof file to them for review. SnapperOne

Kaiser Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I defragged both HDs before trying the GoBack install again. Didn't help. With regard to utility-type programs, there were none installed on either HD when I rec'd the first "whoops message" from GoBack. If need be, I'll reformat drive "C" and "G" again and start from scratch. No response from GoBack (the company), so I can't think what else to do. As for GoBack as a program.........has saved my _ss enough times that I'm fighting to get it back on-line. As for GoBack (Roxio / Adaptec) as a company, while I have religiously suggested that people install GoBack on their PCs, from now on I guess I'll have to caution them that the company's customer service needs a bit of work. jimf43 - No, I haven't! Thought about it, but decided it would be a waste of time, since GoBack was originally installed on this PC with two drives already installed. Thanks for the thought (truth is your idea will probably work), but I'm just tired of crawling under the desk, disconnecting and reconnecting the PC, etc., etc.......so, I'll probably leave your idea as a last ditch effort. Thanks..........SnapperOne

Our Norton's AntiVirus 2000 ver. 6.0 Live Update virus definition download subscription expired. We went to Symantec's site and successfully purchased and updated our subscription, processing the information through our 1st PC. Here's our problem; we can't figure out how to transfer the updated subscription info to our 2nd PC so we can run Live Update from that PC as well. Norton's FAQ section has nothing on this subject and, of course, you can't speak to a live person to determine how to do it. Any and all help appreciated. SnapperOne (aka Steven)

Updating Norton Antivirus subscription on two PC's
SnapperOne replied to SnapperOne's topic in Software
Clutch........ As mentioned earlier, we're a small business running on two PCs (connected by a LinkSys Router). Please correct me if I am wrong, but unless I'm missing something here, the (trumpets blaring) "CORPORATE VERSION" would seem to be a bit overkill for our two-piece LAN. -

Clutch....... Guess I should check into the "corp" version of their software. My guess is, as a "small" business owner vs. a corporation, the cost will be prohibitive. Nonetheless, relative to MCAfee's retail products, my experience(s) indicate the best way to use them is to suggest them to people you don't like. -

Clutch....... I'd be more than happy to use an antivirus package that is 1) an industry standard, 2) does a good-to-excellent job of protecting my equipment, 3) doesn't screw my system up in some way or another AND 4) doesn't charge for updates.......haven't found one. The only AV program I've come across that "seems" (per reviews I've read) to fulfill 1 out of 4 (protection) is NOD32 out of Australia. It isn't, unfortunately, an industry standard which leaves me a bit nervous about ongoing support. I've been on the bleeding edge before.........and didn't like it. As for McAfee Products in general, I've had nothing but bad experiences with them as have my friends. I simply won't install, even for a test, any McAfee products on mission critical machines. Once burned......Oh well, it happens. Twice burned.......Everyone is due a second chance. Three times burned......."You asked for it!" -

Blade Runner......... Silly me to assume, since I can install NAV2000 v. 6.0 on both of my machines without having to pay for the program twice, that I should be able to install the definition updates on both machines without paying for the same information twice. Oh well, $10.00 isn't going to break the bank. -
Just bought a bulk pack of CD-Rs. Unlike the other packages we've purchased in the past, there is no matte-white finish on the non-read side of the CDs. Can we write directly on the CD with a broad-tip magic marker or similar pen without the matte finish? If no, what's the best way to protect the CDs surface so we can write on it to indicate what's stored on the disk? SnapperOne (aka Steven)
-
We've decided to scan and than store onto CD-Rs several thousand pages of business notes and Board of Director minutes using an HP Scanjet 4400C scanner and Plextor 12/10/32A CD-RW burner. Since we do not want the stored documents to be alterable once they are stored on CD, it is our thought to scan the documents as images, than store them onto the CDs via Microsoft Word as .jpg files. During tests we noticed that, while the originals scan almost instanly, the process of converting the images through MSWord as .jpg files is quite lengthy. Our questions are......... For an average business letter, should the conversion time be long; and, is there a better way to achieve the results we're looking for?

Davros....... Picture me with tears in my eyes! Thought it wouldn't make a difference. Oh well, look out relatives, you're getting silver coasters for Christmas. Steven

Davros........ We're using Win2KPro on a system running a PIII-667 with 256K of DDram. The software we're using is Word-97 (have found no compelling reasons to upgrade), HP Precisionscan Pro 3.1, HP PhotoSmart, and HPScan Utilities (this last item includes "HP Copy Utility and I.R.I.S. OCR). Can't find <Insert><Image><from Scanner>, but did find <Insert><Object><Create New><Image Document><Select Source> (with one of the choices being the HP Scanner). We'll play around with it and see if it works. And finally, is it you thought that there might be an AutoFeeder for our HP Scanjet 4400c? Thanks again for your insight(s). Steven
-
Davros & Alien........... Whoops, forgot to say that OCR doesn't work for our application, because it would require us to proof-read each scanned document for accuracy. Since we're scanning legal documents, 99% isn't accurate enough. SnapperOne (aka Steven)
-
Davros & Alien........... Thanks for the insight(s). You are correct, we do wish to store the documents in a format that will not allow the text to be altered at a later time. With regard to your suggestions, we do not have Paint Shop, Adobe, or an automatic document feeder. I will check into Paint Shop and Adobe. Unfortunately, while the task of hand-feeding the documents sheet-by-sheet is tedious and time consuming, our equipment budget won't currently allow the purchase of an auto-feeder. Additonally, once this storage process is complete, we probably won't need an autofeeder again. Nonetheless, your "program" and password suggestions are appreciated. With regard to my question about the conversion from a scanned document-image to .jpg, based upon an 8.5" X 11" sheet with an average amount of typing on it, should we expect the conversion process to be lengthy? SnapperOne (aka Steven)

I knew how to do this in Win98SE, but must be having a "senior moment" now that I'm using Win2KPro. I want to combine many of the listings found in <Start><Programs> under more general listings, so the program list isn't so long. I.E.;.....I'd like to group Access, Excell, Outlook, etc...under "Microsoft Programs"; and, Nortons AntiVirus and System Works under "Norton's Programs" etc.... Problem is I can't remember: 1) How to enter the new master-listings, and 2) Move the sub-listings to the new group listing. As I remember, once I've created the master listing, all I have to do is drag the sub-listing to its' new location.

<Start><Programs> How to combine listings?
SnapperOne replied to SnapperOne's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Sampson........... Thanks for the info.....worked like a champ. Another question. Why don't Access, Excel, and Word show up when you go to <Start><Open> and double-click on the Program folder? The short-cuts show up when you go to <Start><Programs>. Thanks again for the lead. Helped alot. -
A friend of mine says ***ually oriented spam was autoloading stuff onto his desktop by coming in as e-mail with 1995 or earlier creation dates, even though it was received, as an example, today. Since he views his e-mail in decending date order, the "old" e-mail was usually just off his screen and therefore out-of-site. Until he stumbled across the unopened 1995 e-mail, at the bottom of his in-box list, he couldn't figure out how this stuff kept coming back. Is there a way to prevent this from occuring?
