Looking for a Voodoo3 3000 or Voodoo 5500

Chicago, IL. Why,.........do you have a board you're looking to sell? Would have responded sooner, but have been out of town all week. SnapperOne -
I have been using the MPEG player that came with my Plextor 12/10/32a CD-RW for almost a year without a problem. All of a sudden, a problem. After downloading and successfully running an MPEG file using the Plextor player, when I try to download a 2nd file, while the player controller comes up on screen, the files doesn't automatically begin playing (it used to) and I can't make the file play by pressing the "play button" on the player. However, when I go into Taskmaster, it shows a file called M2K.exe is running. When I EndTask on M2K.exe and download the desired MPEG file again, the file downloads, the player comes on screen, and the file automatically begins playing. Any idea what's going on. SnapperOne

An IT guy we occassionally hire says, because of some suspicious hard drive sounds, we should "Ghost" one of our mission-critical business PCs. The repair vendor we use, however, says they don't (read won't) ghost a Win2k system, they image them. The sayd you can't ghost a Win2k system. One - Is there a difference between ghosting and imaging? Two - Could it be that our IT and repair vendor are using the term "ghost or ghosting" interchangeably with Norton's Ghost, and Three - Can a Win2K system be "ghosted"?

Just purchased an HP Scanjet 4400C. While the scanner software recognizes Microsoft Office, Access, Image, etc..... it doesn't recognize Picture It! Photo 2001 as being on the system. Can't get into Microsoft's site to ask why. Any ideas? SnapperOne

Used the trial version of WinWasher once or twice over the 30-day trial period. Appears to be a nice program. Didn't use it enough, however, to determine if I wanted to spend $30 for the complete package, so I tried to uninstall then reinstalled the demo. In short, the Install Wizard said, "Your 30 days are up!" Here's the question! If the program was, supposedly, unistalled using Control Panel's "Add/Remove" function, do you have an idea where they stored the file(s) that triggered the "Your 30 days are up" message. I found some residual files in the Registry, but apparently missed some others. SnapperOne

OK........I finally figured out I was supposed to make a desktop shortcut to Recoil's setup.exe on the CD, right click the shortcut to get to the compatability tab, etc, etc..... Program appears to have loaded OK. With that done, I replaced the desktop shortcut to the CD's install exe. file with a shortcut to Recoil.exe on the HD to initiate the program. Unfortunately, while the new shortcut will get me into the game (mouse movement, sound, etc...), when I mouse-click on the <Start> button (or for that matter any game control button), I'm dumped back to the desktop. Sooooooooo, close, but soooooooo far. Anyone have an idea how to get this thing to run. I think I've done just about everything I know how to do. The game compatibitliy list says it should run! DosFreak......... Finally figured out how to implement ACT 1.5 using QFix. Have, however, been unable to get Recoil to load. Have checked both Win95 and Win98 (separately), attempting to initiate Setup.exe off the CD. Program still says I need Win 95/98. Anything else I can try? Steven

DosFreak........... Downloaded and installed the ACT 1.5. I know I probably being very dense here, but I don't see a place to "check 95/98" anywhere in the window copied below. ******(Page view copied from the ACT title screen)****** Overview The Application Compatibility Toolkit contains documents and tools to help Microsoft® Windows® 2000 customers diagnose and resolve application compatibility issues. I have two Taskbar icons (far right side of task bar by volume icon) that I apparently picked up while surfing. While I can make these icons disappear by right-clicking each icon and selecting their "exit" option, I've been unable to find the file that's associated with them that initiates their being loaded into the taskbar in the first place. My question is this. Does Win2KPro have a run command I can initiate that will allow me to track "load commands" during bootup? Or, is there a better way to find where these icon/files are coming from, so I can kill them permanently? Or, is there an equivalent Win98SE's msconfig that provides a method for stopping load-commands by simply checking them off from a list? Steven

Nemesis and El_Mono, thanks for the info. I've already downloaded Startup Control Panel, but will still go poking around inside the Registry simply because I like to see what's going on in there. Thanks again.............one annoying little file is well on its' way to extinction. Steven -
While I've been able to download AVI video files, my system says it is not a supported format. What is it? Can I simply download the capability, something like downloading a master MPEG file so I can play MPEG files? Steven

Someone just gave me a copy of Return Fire 2; said it was a pretty good "shooter". When I attempted to load the game, it says it's unable to find some "Glide file", then continues the install. When I attempt to run the game, same message, but give a choice to use Glide or software drivers. Have tried both settings. NaDa. What's with "Glide"? Where do I get it? Etc.......... Running Win2K, PIII-667, 128M Rdram, Viper 550 TNT video, and an SB-Live.

Looking for a Voodoo3 3000 or another Voodoo-based card that will both provide Glide support AND work well with Win2KPro. Just rec'd a copy of an old (1998) game that requires Glide support.

(Win2K system) When I attempt to enter "winipcfg" in the <START><RUN> box, the following error message appears: "Cannot fint eht file. Make sure the path ahd filename are correct" Can't find winipcfg on the HD anywhere. 1) Shouldn't I be able to access winipcfg? 2) If it's missing, where can I get it and where do I put it on the HD. From the recent posts on XP, it appears MS has bought everybody off with game compatibility, stability, etc....as a means of pushing product activation down everyone's throat. If everyone is prepared to trade off control of their computer so they can play some lousy game,......... game over, MS wins! Might as well get ready for them to start renting you your OS on a monthly basis. Don't think they'll try! Well, if you're old enough to remember Key Disks, Restricted number of installs, Copy protection, etc........renting you your own OS might not seem so far fetched. Remember, "It's not that you're paranoid, it's that you're not paranoid enough" - ananymous

MasterVadered........ Can't say I agree or disagree about XP being the best of anything, since I haven't tried it. As for being computer savy so you can hack around MS's bullsh_t, why should you have to? But you are, of course, correct (to a point) about not having to use XP if you don't like it! That is until your software is no longer supported and you have to use XP simply so you can buy mainstream software. Unfortunately, while your positive comments about XP's features are interesting, as soon as you get into a discussion with MS about how much (and lets' call it what it is) copy protection is acceptable, "Game over, MS wins!". Your position should be that no amount of copy protection is acceptable. As the old saying goes, once the camel get its' nose under the tent, it's going to be pretty hard to get the son of a ***** out of the tent. And by the way (and this is not meant as a slam about your computer abilities), do you really think you can, forever, find ways of hacking around MS's copy protection if they decide they don't want you to? Netslayer2k1..........an old joke, but it seems to apply ******* An unemployed man goes to try for a job with Microsoft as a janitor. The manager there arranges for an aptitude test. After the test, the manager says, "You'll be hired at a salary of $30 per day, let me have your e-mail address so I can send you a form to complete, and tell you where to report for work each day." Taken aback, the umemployed man states that he is neither in possession of a computer nor of an e-mail address. To this the MS manager replies, "Well then, that means that you virtually don't exist and therefore cannot expect to be employed". Stunned, the man leaves. Not knowing where to turn and only having about $10 to his name, he decides to buy a 10.lb box of tomatoes. In less than 2 hours, he sells the tomatoes, singly, at a 100% profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100; and thus, it occurs to the man that he could quite easily make a living selling tomatoes. Eventually he multiplies his profits many-fold in quite a short time. Not long thereafter, he acquires a cart to transport several dozen boxes of tomatoes, only to have to trade it in again for a pickup truck. And, by the end of the second year, he is the owner of a fleet of pickup trucks, managing a staff of a hundred formerly unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. Considering the future of his family, he decides to buy some life insurance; and, calling an insurance agent, he picks an insurance policy to fit his new circumstances. At the end of the telephone conversation, the agent asks for the man's e-mail address in order that he might forward the documentation. When the man replies that he has no e-mail address, the agent is stunned saying, "What, you don't have e-mail?" "How on earth have you managed to amass such wealth without the Internet, e-mail or e-commerce?" "Just imagine where you would have been by now if you had been connected from the very start." After a moment's pause, the man, now a millionaire replied, "Well, I would have been a janitor at Microsoft!" The morals of this story: v v v v v 1. The internet, e-mail and e-commerce do not need to rule your life. 2. If you don't have e-mail, but work hard, you can still become a millionaire. 3. Seeing that you got this story via e-mail, you're probably closer to becoming a janitor than you think you are. And..........the biggie 4. If you have a computer and e-mail, you've already been screwed by Microsoft at least once; and, if you allow Microsoft to paint you into an ever decreasing "box of options", you will continue to be screwed by MS as often as MS can arrange it! Has anyone been able to get Panzer General II (a Win95 program) to run under Win2kPro? Not a critical questions; I just found a "new copy" in a bargin bin for $6.99 and couldn't pass it up. Just wondering if it's worth the time loading it. If not, I'll just put in on the shelf with all the other still shrink-wrapped games I've purchased but never run. Guess I just like collecting games. Looking for any play by e-mail gamers or info about PBEM clubs focussed on East Front, East Front-II, or West Front. Any gamers, links, addresses, etc....greatly appreciated. Was hooked up with www.theblitz.com, now .org, but site seems to be down or club is no longer active. SnapperOne

DosFreak......... Yep! Guess you are right. Looks like we have arrived at the "what the heck" part of this pesky problem. Sooooooo, I've decided to first download NVidia drivers 6.34, then 6.50, then 7.58 to see if any of these solve the problem. Already know 12.20 didn't. Then, if no improvement, I'll load the newer DirectX version. Catch you again sometime. SnapperOne

Four and Twenty........ imtim83................ DosFreak............... Got a post from someone who had the exact same problem on similar equipment. Says he/she found the problem was related to DirectX, and that I should make certain I am using 8.0a and not 9.0. But, since he/she couldn't tell me how to determine what DirectX I was using currently, it was suggested that I simply download 8.0a from download.com and reload it over whatever version I am using now. Make any sense to you? DosFreak................ "....something wrong with your config." Game config? PC config? Any best guess would be appreciated. SnapperOne

Installed Win2000-Pro several weeks ago as a complete install, not an install over Win98SE. Have come across something I don't understand. I have the monitor set to go-to-sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity, but leave the PC and hard drive alone. When the system is left in this state for a day or so (haven't checked if for shorter periods of time), and I move the mouse to bring the screen back up, the system goes into a reboot and runs chkdsk. What's up with this? SnapperOne
-
Kriker........ Yep, already found the problem. But thanks anyway for the post. For reference, the problem was with the Logitech mouse driver. They've come out with new drivers,.....problem solved. When I uninstalled the mouse driver, up popped another problem. It was apparently being hidden by the mouse issue. In short, with the system on standby (monitor and HD shut down), when I brought the system back up I was greeted with an "out of resources error". Turned out to be a scanner detection file call SDetect.exe that always ran in the background. Since it wasn't needed to run the scanner, too-da-lewed the file. Problem solved.
