Everyone talks about overclocking, what about noise?
Marktait replied to Marktait's topic in Slack Space
That Fan looks great, is there anything like that on the market for an Athlon XP and do you know where i could get one from an England based Shop on the internet? -

I'd rather not remove the CPU fan if possible, i had thought of maybe buying a 5000RPM Fan. Also i DONT LIKE the noise -

The 1.2 downstairs is as sweet as can be and is pritty much silent, but the Athlon XP is just getting so much on my nerves. Such a noisy fan in there, i cant really complain though because i got the fan for free of my supplier. I had heard about this plastic pipe that you can put over the CPU + Fan and then lead it to the back of the case, maybe that would silent it? -
Im using an LG DVD Drive in both computers which is a speed of 16x/48x. The drive that is in the 2nd Computer is the one i am having problems with. When i put in a CD everything is fine, the autoplay runs, etc but when i install anything off any disc the DVDDrive seems to think the disc has a scratch or summin and wont read it properly, then i wud get an error message from the setup saying could not copy files please check your disc and then i have to put the disc in the CDWriter and that works great. The DVDDrive on the 1st Computer works fine and reads everything OK!I know the DVDDrive is OK coz i installed windows using that drive.Any help would be appreciated coz its driving me insane. ---------------------------------- 1st Computer ---------------------------------- AMD 1700+ Athlon XP ASUS A7V133A VIA Motherboard 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 3 Ti200 (Det 27.10 Core:195/Memory:460) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 40x Compag CDDrive 16x/10x/40x LiteON ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 Player Creative 4.1 Surround Sound 1600 Speakers 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter - 2nd Computer Networked WinTV Primio FM TV/Radio Tuner ---------------------------------- 2nd Computer ---------------------------------- 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 2 MX200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 40GB Seagate 5400RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 24x/10x/40x Samsung ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster 128 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Cable Connection 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Laptop Networked 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - 1st Computer Networked 300Watt RMS 2.1 Active Subwoofer Logic Speakers ---------------------------------- Windows XP Professional Corporate Platinum Edition(IE6 SP1 beta 2813) Windows XP Plus Pack Office XP Corporate Edition with Frontpage Publisher XP Corporate Edition

Managed to sort this problem, the power supply going into the DVDDrive is dodgy so have to buy a splitter for another power supply wire. Thanx

I would probably say personally to get the drivers from Nvidia's site or find the detonator 27.XX drivers and see if you get any better results from them. ---------------------------------- 1st Computer ---------------------------------- AMD 1700+ Athlon XP ASUS A7V133A VIA Motherboard 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 3 Ti200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 40x Compag CDDrive 16x/10x/40x LiteON ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 Player Creative 4.1 Surround Sound 1600 Speakers 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter - 2nd Computer Networked WinTV Primio FM TV/Radio Tuner ---------------------------------- 2nd Computer ---------------------------------- 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 2 MX200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 40GB Seagate 5400RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 24x/10x/40x Samsung ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster 128 (3x)10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter 300Watt RMS 2.1 Active Subwoofer Logic Speakers ---------------------------------- Windows XP Professional Corporate Platinum Edition(IE6 SP1 beta) Windows XP Plus Pack Office XP Corporate Edition with Frontpage Publisher XP Corporate Edition

I'm getting a problem with my 1700+ that when windows is starting to load, it just stops doing anything. The harddrive light stays on and the slider for the Windows XP boot screen moves across but the HardDrive isn't being accesssed coz theres just silence. Then after about 3-6 seconds it starts loading again. This only happens 2 out of every 5 boots but gets annoying. ---------------------------------- 1st Computer ---------------------------------- AMD 1700+ Athlon XP ASUS A7V133A VIA Motherboard 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 3 Ti200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 40x Compag CDDrive 16x/10x/40x LiteON ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 Player Creative 4.1 Surround Sound 1600 Speakers 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter - 2nd Computer Networked WinTV Primio FM TV/Radio Tuner ---------------------------------- 2nd Computer ---------------------------------- 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 2 MX200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 40GB Seagate 5400RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 24x/10x/40x Samsung ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster 128 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Cable Connection 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Laptop Networked 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - 1st Computer Networked 300Watt RMS 2.1 Active Subwoofer Logic Speakers ---------------------------------- Windows XP Professional Corporate Platinum Edition(IE6 SP1 beta 2813) Windows XP Plus Pack Office XP Corporate Edition with Frontpage Publisher XP Corporate Edition

This was at 640X480, I havent tweaked windows at all apart from changing my virtual memory so that its 512MB(smallest size) - 768MB(largest size) that seems to have been very effective speedwise. ---------------------------------- 1st Computer ---------------------------------- AMD 1700+ Athlon XP ASUS A7V133A VIA Motherboard 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 3 Ti200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 40x Compag CDDrive 16x/10x/40x LiteON ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 Player Creative 4.1 Surround Sound 1600 Speakers 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter - 2nd Computer Networked WinTV Primio FM TV/Radio Tuner ---------------------------------- 2nd Computer ---------------------------------- 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 2 MX200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 40GB Seagate 5400RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 24x/10x/40x Samsung ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster 128 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Cable Connection 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Laptop Networked 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - 1st Computer Networked 300Watt RMS 2.1 Active Subwoofer Logic Speakers ---------------------------------- Windows XP Professional Corporate Platinum Edition(IE6 SP1 beta) Windows XP Plus Pack Office XP Corporate Edition with Frontpage Publisher XP Corporate Edition

I'm using det 27.10 and to be honest im not sure how its getting a score like that, Iv also got this confusing thing that the 1.2Ghz with the GF2 MX200 boots a lot faster than my XP 1700+, and i mean ALOT FASTER. So i aint sure how it gets that score, i was surprised too and also none of that system is overclocked too. ---------------------------------- 1st Computer ---------------------------------- AMD 1700+ Athlon XP ASUS A7V133A VIA Motherboard 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 3 Ti200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 40x Compag CDDrive 16x/10x/40x LiteON ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 Player Creative 4.1 Surround Sound 1600 Speakers 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter - 2nd Computer Networked WinTV Primio FM TV/Radio Tuner ---------------------------------- 2nd Computer ---------------------------------- 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 2 MX200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 40GB Seagate 5400RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 24x/10x/40x Samsung ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster 128 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Cable Connection 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Laptop Networked 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - 1st Computer Networked 300Watt RMS 2.1 Active Subwoofer Logic Speakers ---------------------------------- Windows XP Professional Corporate Platinum Edition Windows XP Plus Pack Office XP Corporate Edition with Frontpage Publisher XP Corporate Edition

I gotta say i like AMD systems, iv never actually had an Intel but i know of three people that have and i have used there systems a few times.Mainly iv stuck with AMD since i had my AMDK6-2 450Mhz, the reason i stuck with it after that is because i was getting much better results from it speedwise than my cousin was getting with his Intel P3 500Mhz. Everyone in my family have all turned to AMD after having there Intels so this also made me get my two systems as AMD Powered as my cousin has a AMD Athlon TBird 850Mhz which he loves and my uncle has his new AMD Athlon TBird 1.0Ghz which he seems to enjoy, both them have said that they will probably stick to AMD CPU's in future. Like BladeRunner said:"Like anything in life once you are happy with something you tend to go back to the same manufacturer again and again." I couldnt agree more with that, for me anyway. ---------------------------------- 1st Computer ---------------------------------- AMD 1700+ Athlon XP ASUS A7V133A VIA Motherboard 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 3 Ti200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 40x Compag CDDrive 16x/10x/40x LiteON ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 Player Creative 4.1 Surround Sound 1600 Speakers 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter - 2nd Computer Networked WinTV Primio FM TV/Radio Tuner ---------------------------------- 2nd Computer ---------------------------------- 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 2 MX200 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 40GB Seagate 5400RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 24x/10x/40x Samsung ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster 128 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Cable Connection 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - Laptop Networked 10/100 Genius Ethernet Adapter - 1st Computer Networked 300Watt RMS 2.1 Active Subwoofer Logic Speakers ----------------------------------

I just used Windows Update last night and it was fine, because i downloaded some driver updates but tonight is the total opposite response. All i get is everything loading fine but once its counted to 75% of checking updates it then just freezes and the Internet Explorer window just doesnt do anything anymore, just completly blank screen,Task Manager doesnt report it as not responding either.Hope Windows Update does start working again. ---------------------------------- AMD 1700+ Athlon XP ASUS A7V133A VIA Motherboard 512MB PC-133 RAM 64MB GeForce 3 Ti200 (Det 27.10) 60GB IBM 7200RPM HardDrive 16x/48x LG DVDDrive 40x Compag CDDrive 16x/10x/40x LiteON ReWriter Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 Player Creative 4.1 Surround Sound 1600 Speakers 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter - Cable Connection WinTV Primio FM TV/Radio Tuner ---------------------------------- Windows XP Professional Corporate Platinum Edition Windows XP Plus Pack Office XP Corporate Edition with Frontpage Publisher XP Corporate Edition

Iv never been told the answer to this question or seen anybody answer it, what does the SSE technology thats built into Intel Chips and now Athlon chips too actually do.Like AMD have 3DNow+ and thats for enhanced graphics on games that support it as far as i know. I recently bought a nice new ASUS A7V133A ATX Motherboard and got all my stuff working on it from my older Gigabyte 71XE4 Motherboard, But now when i have formatted my drive and put Windows XP back on i find that all games crash when loading (Midtown Madness 1 + 2,Serious Sam,etc) and also i get an error from Windows Media Player (The specified key is not valid)when trying to play music. The soundcard works fine as Realplayer and Media Player 6 plays music. Iv updated all drivers for all my stuff and flashed the BIOS but still the same, i also installed Windows XP Home and WIndows 2000 Pro and these do exactly the same. What can i do?
