http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/library/resources/reskit/tools/hotfixes/sysdiff-o.asp Someone mentioned before that they wanted a way to incorporate everything into a windows 2000 install (i.e. WMP7, IE6, DX8 etc), this lets you do it. Quality.

You guys have mp3s? If you do then this is for you. Shove them all in a folder, and if poss subfolders by artist, then right click on the taskbar, and select new toolbar, point it to the root folder of your mp3s (i.e.) e:\mp3s\ not the folder of any one artist, then click OK. Now, it will probably try to take up all the taskbar, but drag it towards the clock, and voila, a list of mp3s arranged in the style of a start menu that pops up and scrolls.

I imagine Microsoft made more of an effort with the TCP networking code in Advanced Server than they did with Professional, and it shows as my throughput is always much faster in Advanced Server, but it begs the question, if they have this high speed ability in Advanced Server, why hamper Pro? It's like someone must've said "Shall we make 2K Pro faster and better? Nah."
-
What is the story with this thing. In 2K Pro it slows the system down to horrific 486 speeds (judder judder) every time you try to connect to the internet and all the time you are connected. Windows take ages to redraw etc. But, and it's a big but, reboot into Advanced Server, and the same drivers have absolutely no problem with the modem, it runs flawlessly, so, is this a problem with the modem, or some power management or TCP/IP problem in 2K Pro? If it's any help, I ahad the same problem in Me, and I am convinces the TCP in Advanced Server is better as I get noticeably faster connections every time in it.

I think to be honest it is the USB device is crappy (no manufacturer name on it, and when I eventually found out, the website had no drivers). Advanced Server is possibly more tolerant

7.17 are solid as a rock, and speedy, the 12.00 produce problems rendering bitmaps on a number of systems, look at the thread regarding the 12s for some info

Thanks, but it's not my idea. It's a friend of mine, I'd post his email address so you could send him credit, but he'd probably not like it. PS, Thom, I was gonna credit you when I got home tonight, I was just gonna ride that wave of praise for a little while longer.

I was referring specifically to Dial Up Access to the internet, although it does use the same TCP stack as a LAN/WAN connection. I don't think it's a random chance thing either, since the connection in Advanced Server is always at least 25% faster than Pro. Any ideas, if you need more info, let me know.

Anyone know how to do this?

Not sure personally, but in all my experience (both NT and 2K), whenever you have to dualboot with a 9x OS, the 9x OS always has to go on first, cause installing it always alters the MBR so boo.ini isn't even referenced. I don't knwo about simply putting in another HD with 9x on it and editing boot.ini, though NT seems quite accommo[censored] and probably would co-operate if you got the syntax OK

Just a thought, have you tried disabling IDE autodetection in the BIOS?

I have had not a single problem with any game in 12 months of 2K and Athlons, and the performance, well, there are games that I couldn't run well in Me, so I shifted them to 2K and voila, success, I think the better memory management is a real boon for gamers.

I know someone running the FOP 38 (and a few other case fans), and to get everything running as it should, they had to cut a hole in the back of the case, shove in a second PSU, and run a few of the fans of that (although it does beg the question "Why not just get a bigger PSU")

I fixed the AGP problem in DXDIAG with these 12.00, but the black square keeps appearing occasionally, could this not be related to the bitmap display problems cuke is having? I imagine the drop shadow is a bitmap. I haven't run any games with these drivers yet, but I will let you know as soon as I do.
-
So far, the only drivers I have had great justice from are the 7.17 drivers, they seem to run everything quickly and stably, anything I have tried above them (even WHQL) seems to bu**er up the AGP function or have massive artifacts when running games.

In my experience, so long as you don't have some offbeat Russian graphics card, Windows 2000 will likely support you hardware right out of the box, and if not, you can usually download a driver in a few minutes from te manufacturers website. It's not as hard to use or scary as people coming from 9x tend to think, the hardest part for most of them is getting your head round accounts and privileges.

Oh, and sorry, didn't mean to call you personally a Dumb home user, (I don't think anyone discussing NT based OS's in here is dumb), sorry if it came across like that.

To be honest, I have not personally used XP or "Whistler" (maybe you can furnish me with a copy?), but from all the reviews I have read, and using things like MSN explorer and IE6, the two products that are to XP what IE4 was to 98, (do you rememeber what happened to 95 when you installed IE4!!!) it just seems ridiculously user friendly, and a WINNT directory closing on a gigabyte in size? I have a windows 95 machine across the hall and it has a windows directory 75Mb in size. BLOAT. I am just a bit angry at the way it's all gone Seattle Coffee House en vogue crap. Have you installed MSN Explorer, and listened to the Corporate sounding soft dulcet tones of the female introducer "You and MSN, day one..." OMG it's so crap. That said, on the day I get XP, I will undoubtedly be on here detracting all of my above statements.

XP is a bloaty piece of crap, as will be Office XP, and with all this activation deactivation authentication crap and the crap about crappy Outlook XP not handling exe attachments and Windows XP not supporting USB 2.0, Microsoft are going ****ing insane. Windows 2000 is brilliant, XP is going to be a nightmare for anyone with a smidgen of computer knowledge, having to download patches and tweaks and fixes and cracks to get past all this "User Friendly" shite, I don't want some OS that has a wizard for wizard (Windows will now run the Internet Connection Wizard Wizard, to Wizzify the wizzbang of the omniweb.) I know how to manually set up connections, I don't need this User friendly crud. Windows XP has detected you have moved the mouse, Windows will now launch the interactive multimedia training session on how to use a mouse, please insert Windows XP CD12. CRUD.
