I had a problem after installing SP2 where none of my cd drives would show up anymore. They would show up under device manager with some error about not being able to load the correct drivers. I removed both drives and reinstalled them and they still wouldn't show up under My Computer. I ended up deleting both drives from within Device Manager and then uninstalled all my CD-R burning software, CDRWIN, PlextorManager2000, and Nero, then rebooted. Then reinstalled all the software and now everything works fine. You can try doing this and see if it works for you.

I've been having problems with IE loading up webpages when I click on links outside of IE. For example, when I click on a hyperlink contained in a e-mail sent to me, it opens up a blank browser window instead of loading up the site. Anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks.

When I was running under Win98SE, browsing my friends' computers over Network Neighborhood was quick and painless. (Their computers were also all running Win98SE) However, ever since I upgraded to Win2k, it takes 20 seconds or so for a directory to load up now when I connect to their computers using Network Neighborhood. Can anyone tell me why and how I can fix this annoying delay problem? Thanks!

Thanks for the help. Deleting the key did the trick.

One of the things about Win2k that I've been trying to understand is how its pagefile is reported under task manager. I currently have 384 megs of RAM and I have my swapfile set to 20 megs, down from the 250 megs I originally set it at. I also have the DisablePagingFileExecutive registry tweak enabled which is supposed to keep the kernel loaded in memory rather than the pagefile. Yet when I check my task manager, under Kernel Memory it says total is 49 megs, Paged is 41 megs, and Nonpaged is 8 megs. When I look at my pagefile, it's set to 20 megs minimum and 20 megs maximum. When I check the pagefile.sys file on my drive, it's also at 20 megs. How's this work out? My mem usage is reported to be 107 megs with available memory at 257 megs. No matter how I do the math, this doesn't make sense.

I've noticed a problem that I've been having w/ win2k networking. I'm currently on a LAN at school and have trouble browsing the network. For some reason, everything works fine for the first 3 minutes after I reboot. I can transfer files and view other computers over the network. However, once 3 minutes has passed, I can't access network neighborhood or my network properties. When I try to browse the network after the initial 3 minutes, I get a "Workgroup is not accessible; Handle is invalid" error. When I try to access my network card properties to view my protocols and stuff, I can get to the first menu where it shows general status and number of packets being received and sent. But when I click on properties to view the protocols and stuff, I get an "Unexpected error has occured" error message. I'm running Client for Microsoft Networks, Printer/File Sharing, TCP/IP, and IPX/SPX compatible protocols. I've tried re-installing them, but I still get the same error after the first 3 minutes.

Oh, never mind. I tried using the Net Config Server command and jacked up the autodisconnect values and now everything's working fine.

Just recently I've been receiving error messages in my application and system event logs when I reboot my computer under Win2k. The first error is an application error caused by WinMgmt that says, "WMI ADAP was unable to load the the winspool.drv performance library due to an unknown problem within the library: 0x0". The other error is in the system event log and it's a warning that's caused by the Browser server and states, "The value for the parameter DirectHostBinding to the browser service was illegal." Both of these come up everytime I reboot. Never got them before, but I just noticed this problem starting yesterday for some reason. Any advice?

thanks for the link. i did a little more research on performance counters and an easy way to enable them is through the diskperf command at the command prompt. diskperf -n will disable all disk related performance counters. if you ever wish to re-enable them, you can use diskperf -yd to start them up again.

HDTach works fine for me. You can get it here: http://www.tweakfiles.com/drives/

Well, I looked around online for a good hour or so and couldn't find anything at all. I was also pretty sure it was caused by either the NetBEUI or the IPX/SPX protocol since my friend didn't have the DirectHostBinding entry in his registry and the only difference between our computers was that he didn't have those two protocols loaded. I just uninstalled and re-installed both protocols and now the error messages are gone. I guess my stupid person's solution worked!

I think my computer's still running fine and I don't notice any problems. I don't think this is something major since it's only listed as a warning rather than an error in event viewer. I'll search around online later tonight and see if I can figure out what's causing this. Thanks for the help though!

Well, TCP/IP is a given. I have the IPX protocol installed for games. The rest I have installed so I can print on my roommate's printer over the network. He's running Win98 SE and unless I have those installed, I can't seem to see him. I have a feeling the DirectHostBinding issue is caused by either the NetBEUI protocol or the IPX/SPX protocol. I tried to check and see what legal values there were for DirectHostBinding by searching through my friend's Win2k registry. No instances of it showed up and he doesn't have IPX or NetBEUI installed on his comp so it's probably one of those I'm guessing.

Thanks a lot for the help jaywallen. The winmgmt commands cleared up the problem and they haven't returned. If they do, I think I'm just going to turn off the counters. As for the DirectHostBinding error, I'm not sure what caused it since I'm fairly certain I didn't change any settings or install any new software when the warning started appearing. Some general info as to my networking setup is that I'm on a LAN connection within my dorm at school, T3 connection. I'm currently running Client for MS Networks, File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks, NetBEUI, NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS, and TCP/IP. When I look it up in the registry, the value for DirectHostBinding that's reported as being illegal by Event Viewer is set to \Device\NWInkIPX\Device\NWInkNB. I have no idea what that means though.

Win2k Windows Explorer Nuisance???????

Hmm, I don't know why it does that for you, but when I do sort by name, priority is always given to foldes and then individual files and shortcuts.
