I've got a newbie question. I installed IE6, after doing so, this is the first time that this has een happening to me. When i download some files on some websites, including a couple files on the download.cnet website, they dont prompt me where to save, it saves to my temporary internet files directory instead of prompting me where to save it. Do you know exactly why this happens? How to fix it?
-
The first time the File Download dialog came up, i unchecked the "always ask before opening the file or saving it to your computer?" option. this probubly unchecked that option in the windows folder options for that file type as well. then by going into folder options and rechecking that option, then resetting the security of the browser, it once again prompts me before saving files. even after putting my security back up to medium, the browser will always open the file download dialog prompt. I learned that you have to do "both" of those steps in order to fix this problem if you ever uncheck the that box in the download dialog. It does make me wonder why setting the security in internet options to low, aided in fixing it. I understand why going to folder options and checking the box helped. But then putting the security back up to medium didnt hurt anything. its kind of weird how making a change in the security helped.

thank you very much Brian Frank, everything that Inray posted in that message applied to my problem! "except for I always have unchecked the "Confirm open after download" checkbox on "Folder Options" - "File types", at least for common extensions (.ZIP etc) " This option had to be checked before i installed ie6 and i put the check back in that option, because afterwards i just remember now and forgot to post this, files i download with the zip extension would open after i download them automatically. but that is not the only thing.. what Fatfish said about the security options, setting them to low just fixed it right now as i speak. thanks again Brian Frank

im not sure why, but even after uncheck both of the install on demand options there it still does it

I have a problem where a User keeps appearing under my Security tab of the properties of a directory on my server. Even though this is the only problem that i have with my server right now, I'm worried that a hacker somehow did this. The icon of this user has a question mark under the face and the name shows: S-1-5-21-776561741-1677128483-1343024091-1122 I never added this user and this is the second time it has shown up now and i removed it once before in the past. The user had rights except full control. I checked active directory and there is no user or group in there by that name. Is there a way that i can prevent this from happening again? Does anyone happen to know how it could have gained rights to this directory in the first place?

last night i had to re-install win2k over itself. I went to a couple of directories that had permissions set up from my previous installation, and saw the S-1-0005blahblahblah user under the security tab for each of these directories. I saw 4 of them and had 4 users set with permissions on those directories before the re-install. it makes a lot of sense now, thanks for your help

This is between my win2k server and a 98 machine on my network. Well, here is the issue: I boot up do whatever go in my mapped drive fine, relax listen to music from it for a while and then about an hour or so, when i sit idle or browse websites not touching the server, i go back to it and it says not accessible, access denied. This is what I've tried: I've emptied everything from the network dialog box on both machines and put it all back in a few times. I had a linksys card in my win98 comp that i took out and replaced with my good old 3com card before i last re-format, but i still have the same prob. It doesnt happen to every computer over the network, my server seems to pick on me the most lol. Although it did happen to one other computer a couple times. Is there some kind of default connection time-out setting for win2k which boots me after time? I dont have any service packs on my server, and its been up for so long im a little scared to put it on lol Im starting to reconsider now though.. what do you think?
-
my only protocall is tcp/ip now. Maybe this is some kind of netbios connection time-out issue with the server, which causes the server to deny access after being used? (This problem is a first for me)

it is weird, i have created the account using the original adminstrater built-in account in win2k, but another thing it only happens after i use the share, for example listen to music off the server. If i boot up and dont go in there, i will be able to access the share later on. but after using it, it seems to deny access afterward sometime later. clutch do you happen to know what the problem could be?
-
thats true, what would you do about the server giving you access denied?
-
I used to have: client for microsft networks ipx/spx tcp/ip and file and print sharing although i had to take ipx out because when i click to open the mapped drive it would hang forever causing a crash. I'm now using: client for microsft networks TCP/IP File and print sharing When i get access is denied, i can still ping it of course lol --doesn't crash windows now that ipx is gone anymore.

what is mtu? I've read that the default receive window is by default set for a 56k (high latency)packet size for win9x,nt,2k not sure about xp though [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters] "TcpWindowSize"=dword:0000ffff and the tweek to change this for cable/dsl or faster connection speeds, dword:00007fff ........but its 56k anyways hehe Was this what you were talking about?

but now that i think about it the model number for the card might be on the actual chipset for 3com it might be on the card for this modem i cant remember where its normally at. it will be a number somthing like 663595
-
because its a winmoden, your not going to want to install a standard driver for it... that would normally be done with an external modem. you should take lanfears advice and bring your computer into your friends room, then unplug the phone chord from his computer and plug it into the back of yours (even though its the same line) if its still slow then go to the 3com website and download an updated driver for your modem, if you dont know what driver to get check its chipset.

The IPC$ is the admin share that is used by the browser service. Are you running windows 98 on one of the machines? if then maybe check your password to see if its correct and/or delete any .pwl file for the user that you logon with. Make sure that the user your logging on with has the proper permissions to access the server *you got your password wrong at logon thats why it comes up* i've done that a few times b4 by mistake type-0 hehe Here's a website that can help: http://www.ezine.com/QandA/IPC.html

after thinking about it, the router is fast. I wasnt thinking of the good features only the negative...lol its not so bad afterall
-
if you dont wanna be a server or send files or whatever, the router is a pretty convenient tool to use for lots of ppl hehe
-
I've tried forwarding all my ports and dmz both, i've tried turning the firewall off altogether. When i host a game like starcraft or a half life server knowone can connnect still unless i unplug my modem from the router and plug it directly into the back of my machine lol. this all with dhcp turned off to dhcp is supposed to give probs with this to so i set it up static. it just doesnt work with this router... my brother has this router as well we've played for some time until we were to frustrated lol

the router sucks. lol
