Is this your first exposure to NT / 2000? If so there is something different about the memroy management in 9x vs the management in 2k. In 2k, you actually have to increase your page file because of how each application you run needs its own memory address space.

Well I remember a fellow message board member in hardware central stating that a 60GXP wouldn't let win2k operate well on a be 6 ..so there has to be some hardware incompatibilities that's all ...if anything newere hardware should have better support . sorry about your attempt to migrate going sour..i do hope that another test bed will do the trick

I would say add another stick of memory and look at matrox solutions. Matrox is another 2D giant
-
no i haven't but i'll ask around other message boards for you and gather a common consensus

Well...do you know about your video architecture? is it shared?

could be caused by bad RAM or faulty BIOS revision ..i know that happened to me when i uopgraeed to 3r for the kt7, had reboots...then I just downgraded to zt ..everything's better

[H]ard Ocp did an article about the a7m266. Apparently they found no problems when transferring through the 686B ..they seem to see that the problem lies between the via nb and via sb ..not amd nb and via sb (with the exception of the mp chipset as laid out by AMD's whitepaper detailing the incompatiblities between the 762 and 686b). I would say that it seems ratehr safe now to get kt266...especially when the a7v266 ..received decent reviews. .

It's not all that buggy ..be sure to update yourself through critical updates and service packs.. then make sure dma is enabled for all possible devices..make sure you have a good BIOS revision. Well there is NTFS, memory management robustness, pure 32 bit stability. NTFS has been known to more of a tough guy's file system, very resilient to fragmentation and file corruption. It is also very secure. Win2k has better memory management compared to any 9x OS because the way it handles it is different. That means you cna multitask very fruitfully ...no resource meter looking over your shoulder. Teh memory mangement of 2k is more efficient at getting back memory from closed applications. Here's how I see it though. In the view of a man running win98SE, his system will be built around the best hardware available. win9x just has hands down compatibility no questioning that. So a person can put a radeon in his or her system without suffering bad frame rates. In the win2k world, everything is built around the Hardware compatibility list. People look for stuff that is compatible w/ the OS. So win2k in a sense is rather picky about hardware and drivers. Tahts' why there seemst o be a good # of 2k users running an nvidia based graphics card. Because of Nvidia's appealing windows 2000 support.

I noticed the difference too. 256 is definitely the sweet spot for power users

now that's why I don't believe in installing "upgrades" It's much safer to do a clean re install and reinstall your programs. Mainly because the 2k and 98 registries are totally different from each other

runs flawlessly on my system

Just download the latest compatibility update. This should give you to right click on a short cut, and then seltect between compatibility layers.

Hmmm..more and more i'm beginning to feel a distrust towards western digital. I mean come on ..i need to set UDMA 5 in some software program . That's odd to me at least. But they're drives are reliable, so I'll give them that.

thanks for the tip

Hey Bladerunner remember how k6III in hardware central would often yell out one sound card, and that one card would be the santa cruz by turtle beach

Multi-Boot Win2k and WinME. WinME support NTFS?
ValkyerieK7 replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Hardware
NTFS stands for New technology file system. It is the native and proprietary file system for NT based machines be they NT4.0, 2000, or XP. -
Is the loki patch still available? or can it be e mailed to me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. lssanjose@csupomona.edu

What chipset are you running? If running a VIA chipset and wanna run your desktop at 32 bit. Then forget about winTV..there's this nasty occurrence of massive streaking on screen.
-
I would say keep it away from pci slot 1. Because this shares w/ the agp slot
-
full blown system specs?
-
What about those running multiprocessor systems under 2000? Are they really forced to run acpi ? or can they choose something else> What is mps anyway? I never really knew that's why
-
heheheheh..only for those that want no questions asked compatibility..and that's it
-
I personally would only install service packs through fresh installs

Is There any sound card that works in win2k really well ?
ValkyerieK7 replied to imtim83's topic in Hardware
thanks for the heads up -
If push comes to shove ..re install because the HAL needs to be re established. . The easiest way is to do this under device manager and change teh computer type
