Is this PC USB 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0 compatible?

Quote: Quote: If the drive states that it is USB 2.0 & 1.1 compatible, this probably means that it's actually a USB 1.1 device - it's being a bit cheeky, and stretching the truth a little, since USB 2 is backwards compatible with USB 1.x devices. Not necessarily - you can make a USB 2.0 device that will operate at the USB 2.0 high speed, but if it is on an older USB host, then it will operate just fine at USB 1.1 full speed. I stand corrected (well, at least, I sit down corrected). I didn't realise that USB devices could do both speeds - I thought it was "all or nothing" as far as USB 2 went. Every day, something new to find out! I stick to my point though, which was that there are a lot of products out there that say they are "USB 2.0 compatible", simply because they are USB1.x devices taking advantage of USB2.0's backwards compatibility. Just because it says it's compatible with USB2, doesn't necessarily mean it is a USB2 device... Rgds AndyF

I'm not sure what the chipset you mention relates to - try searching on the Intel website or Google, that should help. Alternatively, do you know the motherboard make and model (that would be an easier way of finding out) Rgds AndyF

Stop Excel from making numbers an equation?

Quote: Isn't it quotation marks? (") Well thats what I use anyway =) Seems to do the same thing. Not saying your wrong, just never done it that way =) In the cell try "1234567890" see if that works for you. Good luck No need to surround the figures with quotee marks, just precede them with an apostrophe. Quote: the @ sign does th trcik, or a , after the number i was told elsewhere now, i select a row of emtpy cells i plan to put these numebrs into and i choose format custom @ but when iput the number in Excel does its pain in the arse math equation crap again! so i need to AGAIN format the one cell, then paste the number into it again! i really do NOT like excel anymore! The bummer with Excel is that when you copy and paste, it pastes the format as well as the data. If your number is already displayed as "1.12345E17" or something, then also, unfortunately, Excel will have truncated the number already - which is why in the example you gave above when you changed the format, the number displatyed was different from what you enetered. Looks like the only way you're going to get around this is format the cells first, then type the data in again...hope it wasn't too much ;( Rgds AndyF

Stop Excel from making numbers an equation?

There's two ways round this - format the cells as text (custom code @), or type an apostrophe (') before you type the number. Either way will get Excel to treat the number as a string and not as a number. You may need to edit the numbers to get them to display properly (press F2, then just press Enter should be enough). Windows XP SP1 DDK

CUViper Just a thought, but is there a way that you could isolate the 2 parts of the circuit using, for example, optical links rather than electrical links. I started to get into RobotWars a couple of years ago, and this problem of EM interference happens in robots too (low power radio control circuits controlling high power motor control circuits) - one of the solutions mooted was whether you could use some kind of an opto-isolator to separate the 2 parts of the circuit? I don't remember the specifics, but it's a thought. And congrats on the internship, BTW - I know how much competition there is for those things! Hope you learn lots and have fun doing it! Rgds AndyF

  11. It would be easiest to create separate shares for each folder - if you append the share name with the dollar sign ($), this will mean that your users will not be able to browse to the folder through Network Neighbourhood/Network Places. You could use login scripts to map the drives... Just a couple of thoughts Rgds AndyF

    Win2k Server Troubles

Another thing to check is whether you have a TCPIP copier/printer sitting on the network. Sometimes with some of the larger machines, they may announce themselves to the network as a server (as I speak, on our network there is one RIP that is calling itself "Win98 Server", and one calling itself "Win2000 server") Rgds AndyF

    64Bit Time!!!

Just read this article from the front page. It looks like, in 32-bit mode at least, that Opteron is as fast, if not faster, than a standard AMD 32-bit processor... Rgds AndyF

    64Bit Time!!!

I think don't lack of a need for 64-bit is going to deter some people, especially when 64-bit hits the home users - there are always going to be those kind of people that want to have the latest, greatest, biggest, fastest whatever that's around, and that will happen with 64-bit too. Remember the home market has always been where AMD is strongest, the business market is still 99% Intel. I think the only way AMD will make inroads into the business market is if they start producing their own chipsets - they're being killed by the buggy chipsets that VIA produces, unfortunately a lot of people assume this is AMD's fault not VIA's... Remember, also, that Microsoft won't have an AMD 64-bit version of Windows out until the end of this year. Consumer 64-bit Windows probably won't appear until Longhorn. That's going to be a major barrier for 64-bit use, unless people decide to use Linux instead (which could be the final push that Linux needs to send it mainstream?) As far as the killer app for 64-bit: well, on the business side, it's got to be databases - the massive amount of addressable memory means it will be possible to run databases in memory (I've seen Oracle run in memory on Sun, and boy was it fast 8) ). It also makes Windows more able to compete in the data warehousing/OLAP market. Computationally as well, 64-bit could finally push Windows further into the high-end academic/research markets - the markets where players like Sun have had a very strong foothold. As far as consumer use goes, 64-bit is good for anything computationally "expensive" - so video processing would gain, I would imagine. The main home use would have to be gaming though - exactly the area where AMD already has a strong presence - and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see AMD use that as part of their marketing campaign for the home 64-bit processors - kind of like they did when they dropped clock speeds from the processor names - sort of "we're the same as Intel, only better"! Just my 2 cents Rgds AndyF

    64Bit Time!!!

Itanium's taken too long to develop, and when it arrived, it didn't deliver what was promised, especially not when stacked up against existing 64-bit chips like Sparc. It's looking like it's not going to be until Itanium 3 that Intel will be able to live up to it's 64-bit promises - promises it's been making for almost 10 years now! Again Intel seems to have severely misjusdged the market, and AMD have got the jump on them...if, that is, that Opteron et al can deliver the goods! Rgds AndyF

Pc Hangs On Boot and random Hanging??????????

OK, before we all start looking at random things to replace, you need to see what is causing the reboot - you need to turn off the automatic reboot option. (Control Panel->System->Advanced->Startup & Recover->uncheck "Automatically Reboot") - and see what the BSOD is saying... Can you look in the Event Viewer and see whether there are any errors in the system or application logs that might pertain to the crashes. Rgds AndyF

    Powering up Problem

Quote: I had something like this happen to me. I did everything and finnally noticed that the power supply somehow was switched from 120v to 220v. Switched it back to 120v and everything worked fine. Except that, being that Nick is from the UK, he is already using 240V. If he switched his PSU to 120V, it would most likely explode and start to emit nasty smelling smoke. That kind of thing is fairly noticeable Rgds AndyF PS Apologies for the sarcasm, it's been a long day at work...

    Powering up Problem

It could be either the motherboard or the processor, unfortunately I don't think that there is a BIOS beep code for "fried CPU". Do you have another (working) motherboard that you can swap the CPU into? The hard drives spin up, which is good, that means the PSU is okay - but do you have any fans plugged into the motherboard fan headers? Do they spin up? (checks whether the motherboard is getting power) Just a couple of suggestions - but it looks as though you'll be in the market for a new CPU or mobo Rgds AndyF

    DVI or VGA?

I don't think you'd see any improvement using a DVA to D-SUB converter, since you're doing what the graphics board is already doing to provide the signal to its D-SUB connector. I'd imagine that you'd only see an improvement through DVI if you use a monitor with a DVI connector. Rgds AndyF
  23. I'll stop moaning, then You've obviously made up your mind, and are going to stand by it (which is rare enough these days as it is!). I'm also entitled to my view, and we'll just have to agree to disagree I think $10 is peanuts (and you can expect my contribution soon enough) - especially when you think that there are, what, 20-30 apps included in the suite? That 50cents per app - cheap at half the price! Rgds AndyF
  24. Alec I can understand why you do this, however there are 2 problems: (1) You are alienating the rest of the world that doesn't use US date formats (2) It doesn't just bring up one error message, it brings up hundreds - one after another, until the task is killed using Task Manager Both of these suggest to me that it is a bug, because the nag screen is (a) appearing before June 2004 and ( appearing incessantly Again, I can understand why you're doing it from a money standpoint, but at the moment, the application won't work outside of countries using US date formats - which means that you're losing market share (and money). Now if you're inserting the nags to get more money (and why shouldn't you - I imagine you've sweated blood over the years on these apps), surely it makes more sense to fix the problem and get more money in the long term? Surely it would only take a couple of extra lines to pull the system date format and check accordingly? Just my 2 cents worth Rgds AndyF
  25. Alec, man, hate to do this to you, but there's a bug in RAMCharge - as soon as I start it, it keeps coming back with 101 dialog boxes, all of them saying "06/30/2004 is not a valid date" - which is right for a large part of the world, especially where I'm sitting now! Have you hard coded the assumption that everyone uses mm/dd/yyyy dates? Because on the other side of the pond, we all use dd/mm/yyyy... Just a little niggle in an otherwise excellent product Rgds AndyF
