How fast does your computer calculate a Seti@home unit?
AndyFair replied to Tomay's topic in Slack Space
Yes, it's quite easy. There are oodles of guides on the web (here's one) to show you how to do it. You'll need instsrv and srvany from the Resource Kit, and a bit of registry hacking, but that's about all. The command line client runs much faster than the screensaver client, because it has no extra baggage to worry about. Hope this helps, Rgds AndyF -
How fast does your computer calculate a Seti@home unit?
AndyFair replied to Tomay's topic in Slack Space
On my work PC, it's around 10 hours Here at home, I have set my server up running the command line version running as a service, and it was completing 3-4 units a day! Remember, that's running as a service in the background, with the lowest priority setting. Got an e-mail from the SETI people today, looks like exciting times are ahead: they've been down to Arecibo (today is their last day) to get re-observation data of a few likely candidates from the data they've (we've)crunched over the last few years. It also looks like we might be getting a new SETI client to crunch some of this new data, as well as using the "normal" client to crunch more new data from the Southern Hemisphere! Exciting times! If we don't discover alien life (policiticians not included) soon, I'm going to be soooo disappointed! (This weekend is the last episode of Taken in the UK, so I'm feeling kind of hyped up about aliens!) Rgds AndyF -
Hah! And I though it was only us Brits who talked about the weather So, in for a penny, in for a pound... For the first time in weeks, it's actually sunny here in London, the only bummer is that it's still brass monkey weather. Still, the sun makes the coldness a little bit more bearable! The good thing is that it's forecast to last until the middle of the week. Spring is less than a week away, could this be a taste of things to come? If the moon wasn't so bright, it would be an incentive to get the old telescope out again. Ah well, can't have everything! AndyF

Alec, man, you're spending far too much time online if you've got links like that up your sleeve 8) Cool site though, and The Matrix is one of my all time favourite films of all time...can't wait for this year's 2 releases! AndyF

Question for the VIDEO file geeks out here (.avi, .mpg)
AndyFair replied to adamvjackson's topic in Software
The other concern would be that unless you can get the file size down, it will take the screensaver ages to load before anything happens - same thing when you move the mouse, if it takes too long to clear up after itself, it could get annoying! Of course, it won't really affect you, Alec, with your absurdly huge RAMDrive thingy Rgds AndyF -
If you have an optical mouse, and as long as you're not using a plain coloured desk, then you don't need a mouse pad. All a mouse pad does is provide a surface with enough friction that the mouse ball can rotate - but if you don't have mouse balls (excuse the terminology ), you don't need a special surface! I haven't used a mousep ad since I got my MS optical mouse a couple of years ago! AndyF

If you'r getting leases from a PDC, is the DHCP server service running OK on the server? Have you checked the event viewer on the server? Rgds AndyF

As a child of the 70s and 80s, I can't agree more. Children these days are cocooned, and kept away from anything that might possibly harm them. If we're not careful, we're going to have a whole generation of adults that are too scared to make a decision because they never had to do that as kids. It really annoys me when I see all the adverts for all the anti-bacterial products. What we're now seeing is that the immune systems of the younger generations are so weak that they become ill very easily - and I think that this could be catastrophic if something isn't done to stop all the hand-holding... So, yes, we were smacked as children, yes, we played outside in the mud, and yes, we used to share drinks with other kids. But as far as the microbiologists see it, we're much stronger for all that! Going to stop ranting now AndyF

Windows XP SERVICE PACK 2 LEAKED!!
AndyFair replied to NTGAMEMAN's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: First, it's a fake. Second, these leaks and ware.z releases are best not posted here Not to mention the fact that this is probably an alpha or early beta release, so would probably end up doing more harm than good to any PC you installed it on Rgds Andy -

Is there anything in the Event Viewer? AndyF -
OK, so I'm talking out of my arse (or should that be typing out of my arse? ) - no change there, then. I was confusing Connectix with VMWare. Actually, from the front page of this week's ITWeek (UK mag, tried to find link for the story, but couldn't), it looks as though Microsoft will be using VirtualPC to persuade NT4 users to upgrade to Server 2003. To quote from the article, Quote: Microsoft said it will use the tools to support NT4 as a virtual server withing its upcoming Windows Server 2003. This would allow customers to migrate to the newer server OS while retaining older applications .... Microsoft said the new tools may help extend the life of NT4 applications by running them on new, more manageable hardware. It aims to provide this capability by the autumn. However, this news does not change the outlook for NT4, which is soon to be withdrawn by Microsoft. In another editorial article in the same issue: Quote: NT4 business applications and the data associated with them are the crown jewels for some companies, and many do not want or cannot afford to replace or upgrade these applications. With advances in hardware exceeding those in software, running NT4 business applications on Virtual Machine software should not lead to performace problems. So, users could migrate trused applications from their old, flaky boxes onto more reliable new hardware, or so the line from the hardware vendors goes. In fact, Microsoft will be able to give its version an extra performance boost, Virtually Microsoft perhaps, since it owns the interfaces which Connectix software was developed for. A final question is: how will Microsoft introduce the software? As a separate application? Or as cynics are already suggesting, a plug-in for Windows Server 2003? Food for thought... AndyF

I think they're running scared of Open Source. Between the Connectix acquisition and the patent for .NET (also on the front page), it looks as though they're trying to close down the routes for people to use Open Source stuff. I may be cynical 8), but that's what it looks like to me AndyF

I would install the SCSI card before you swap drives over, then install the SCSI drivers and make sure everything is working fine with the controller card just sitting there. Then Ghost the drives across (not sure if you'll need a SCSI driver for Ghost too?) I wouldn't guarantee that it will work without much headache, because NT4 is not a PnP OS, and doesn't like things being changed without being told! Let us know how you get on. Rgds AndyF

I know this might sound like a silly question (not my first, definitely won't be the last!), but why would you want to tweak video settings on a server OS?! Rgds AndyF

XP Restarts Without Warning
AndyFair replied to Radioactive Frog's topic in Everything New Technology
The other thing to do is set automatic reboot on system failure so that you can see what error the BSOD is throwing up. If I remember it right, it's somewhere like Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup & Recovery, turn of "Automatically reboot" Rgds AndyF -

Quote: ...BTW, for those who haven't had/got a Delta fan, there are actually 2 reasons why they've earned the nickname "screamer": 1 refers to the noise they make, the other refers to the noise you make if you are unfortunate enough to get your finger caught in them. Maybe they ought to call them Delta Vampires..... So, one question: what were you doing sticking your finger into a running fan? I hope it was an accident, and not just something you do to pass the time Rgds AndyF -
Quote: Quote: -(1)- Is Windows .NET more like Windows 2000 Server or more like Windows XP? As far as i know it is more based ont Xp nt kernal - it is like Xp pro - but with all the "server options" But in terms of usage, it is far closer to Win2k than XP. It doesn't even look like XP! On to another question: Quote: -(2)- Is it possible to logon more than one user locally? It's a server OS, I can't see why you would need anything like user switching (which, AFAIK, is only available on XP Home anyway). If you can log on to the server, it's as an admin, so I can't see why you'd need to log on as someone else? Another argument goes something along the lines of the fact that, as a server OS, it's not really meant to be used locally... One of the main differences between Server 2003 & Win2k Server is that 2003 is more secure out of the box: settings are disabled by default rather than being enabled for someone to turn off. Can't answer the other questions, I haven't really explored Terminal Server yet. Rgds AndyF

Have you tried pressing the reset or connect buttons on the mouse? Is there anything that might be interfering with the wireless connection? Where do you have the receiver? Rgds AndyF

You need to set the server up as a DHCP client for it to accept and IP address from another DHCP server. In general, though, unless you really need to, this is not the best way to setup a server - they should be set up with a static IP address. Rgds AndyF

I've just had a quick thought: what's good about this board is that we've all had a very "adult" conversation about a very controversial topic - on other boards, this would have descended into a flame war ages ago. Just another reason why NTC is the best site on the web AndyF

Quote: ...Also, somewhere here, we all have to start living with a bit of ethicial integrity... Obviously this is a multi hour discussion... The problem is (and going back to the original topic of discussion) is whose ethics? All of the arguments between the US & Saddam, Israel & Palestine, Northern Ireland & Eire, WW2 (and many more, throughout history, right up till today) all boil down to the following: "My God is better than your God" The problem being, of course, that whichever side you're on, you think your God is the best :x It's much easier being an atheist Philosophy over. I've got the rest of a very nice bottle of wine to drink, and it's a Friday evening - the wrong time to be thinking about all this stuff AndyF

Quote: ...The latest "McDonald's food makes me fat" bull... There was a TV program in the UK recently (I didn't see it, I read the TV guide and steered well clear of it!) that had a "scientist" on it claiming that obesity is actually caused by a virus... Not only do we live in a "blame society", we live in a "blame someone else society". You eat crap food, you get fat, BUT IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT? You smoke cigarettes, you get cancer (a fact known for the last 20-30 years), BUT IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT? You let your kids sit in front of the TV all day, and they grow up with no social skills and brains like mush, BUT IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT? When I hear things like this, I feel like taking the people and slapping them severely about the face with a wet fish in the hope that maybe they will wake up and take responsibility for their own actions - we do, allegedly, live in a free society!!! If this kind of thing rouses the same reaction in you as it does in me, can I recommend that you go to your local bookstore and find (and read ;( ) any book by Michael Moore. He's just released a film called "Bowling for Columbine" (haven't seen it yet, as it wasn't "mainstream" enough for my local cinema) which is all about the shootings in Columbine. He's also written several books, the most recent of which is "Stupid White Men", which is certainly an eye-opener! I can't recommend him highly enough Just my little contribution... AndyF

You could also try something that is purely processor intensive, like SETI or one of those other grid applications. Rgds AndyF
