Just one question: you didn't write "fragile" on the packaging anywhere did you? ;( That's like a red rag to a bull when dealing with the Post Office: they all seem to read "fragile" as "throw around as hard as you can" AndyF

Have you also tried clearing the CMOS so that the BIOS picks up new settings for the CPU rather than trying something that's hanging around from the old processor? Just a thought? AndyF

Window etch be a problem with fan and funny ridges on window
AndyFair replied to Marktait's topic in Hardware
Hmmm...looks like those vent thingies for the fan might cause a few problems installing any kind of sticker onto the window. An alternative would be to make up your own design, create a mask and spray on one of those window etch spray paints (available from your local B&Q or Homebase) Rgds AndyF -
Not only are IBM the a major chip producer (AFAIK, the only hardware supplier, other than Sun, who still makes their own CPUs - with HP dropping everything for Itanium an' all) - they are fast becoming one of the major software houses. Especially with the recent purchase of Rational, which makes IBM the supplier of some of the best development and testing tools on the planet! I bet Microsoft are kicking themselves over that one - unless they already have a Rational Rose killer in the closet somewhere...? AndyF

Easiest way is to remove the US profile. That way, the PC will boot up in UK mode as well. Rgds AndyF

Great idea, more AntiVirus engines should incorporate it!

I'm looking at mDaemon as a mail server at home ($100 for 6 users). It has an option to check for spam as it arrives (it checks the senders address/IP against a couple of lists of known spammers (one of them is ORDB.org), and if they match, mDaemon returns a "User Unknown" message, which increases the chances of being removed from that spam list.) The only problem I've found so far is that sometimes the spam lookup fails (I've yet to investigate whether that's to do with the website it uses, or mDaemon itself), so there may be one day every couple of months where all the spam gets through - but that's only a minor quibble! The only comment I would have about the Postini product is how good are it's heuristics - what proportion of false positives does it produce? Just my tuppence worth! Rgds AndyF -
Of course, they're entirley kosher, aren't they? ;( What am I saying, of course they are AndyF

As far as I know, SP2 for XP hasn't even entered beta yet, and judging by how long SP1 took to go through beta, I can't imagine that we'll be seeing SP2 much before June/July. As for what's critical or not, that's really for you to decide. I've noticed that a lot of the most recent updates have been the type where a malicious hacker could take over your PC...can't say they'd find anything of interest on mine!! And if you're only on dial-up, I'm sure you'd notice if someone tried!! Rgds AndyF

So, we can assume that the poster was a little miffed...? AndyF

OK, first off, what's the error? What are your system specs? Have you recently added new hardware or software? Press CTL-ALT-ESC, click on the Processes tab, then click on the CPU column - is there any process that is taking an inordinate amount of processor time? Have you tried booting from the Windows CD and selecting "Repair Windows" (although I would leave this until nothing else has worked. Without more information, no one can help you. AndyF

Quote: When using the best OS available I feel it is only natural to use the best file system too - NTFS. FAT & FAT32 should be condemed to the same fate as the OS's that spawned them - as mats for your coffee mugs. Is there any reason to use FAT any more? Apart from for floppy disks - and, lets face it, when was the last time you absolutely had to use a floppy?!

Hmmm...you learn something new every day. I have to say that I thought Boxing Day always referred to fights of a Queensbury pugilistic nature...ah, well, can't be right every time Anyway, hope you all had good Christmases (or whatever - I work in a company with people from many different faiths, yet they all celebrate Christmas! As one of them said, it's not as though Christmas is a religious festival any more...!) and that Santa brought you what you wanted. Hope you all have a very good New Year - and remember, if you don't make any resolutions, you won't be able to break them Rgds AndyF

I depends on the quality of your handwriting - I have trouble reading my own writing sometimes, and I doubt that any application would be able to do better ) The only thing Google came up with was the new tablet PCs, but at the moment (AFAIK) there are no plans for Microsoft to release the handwriting recognition as an upgrade to "normal" Windows XP. Download.com came up with this application, but it looks like it will only convert writing formed from distinct (i.e. not grown-up and joined-up) writing. Sorry I couldn't help more - looks like you might be spending the festive period typing up your notes again ;( Hope you manage to find something - and if you do, please share with us!! Rgds AndyF

Alternatively, have you tried an application called Hypersnap? Rgds AndyF

Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick; can't install Windows XP
AndyFair replied to PKLambooy's topic in Hardware
No, XP comes with built-in drivers for all of their joysticks and controllers. I thought, from your original post, that you'd plugged it in but it wasn't working! Rgds AndyF -
Quote: ...The longest journey. Loved it If you loved the Longest Journey, I would recommend that you try and find a game called "Syberia" Don't know who publishes it in the US, but check out the website. Don't know if it's by the same people who did the Longest Journey, but it has the same feel to it - quality graphics, excellent storyline, interesting puzzles. The only shame is that it was over too quickly for my liking - although they are already working on a sequel!! Hope this helps, Rgds AndyF

TCP/IP printing is available in NT, but isn't installed by default. You need to add it in as a network service (it's called something like "Microsoft TCP/IP Printing") Rgds AndyF

I think the last lot of research into the matter went something along the lines of: "Games don't turn people into killers, but what it does do is affect those that are susceptible..." The key word here is "susceptible"...if they weren't affected by games, they would be affected by something else such as TV, movies, magazines... Unfortunately, games are misunderstood by the type of person that makes these kind of sweeping statements ("Games kill") - and, as far as these people are concerned, if they don't understand it, it must be evil. You just can't argue with that kind of mindset, it's best just to ignore them - sooner or later, something else will come along for them to pick on... Just my tuppence ha'penny worth... AndyF

Quote: ...if I am correct, that's how SerialATA will be... SerialATA will only have one device per cable/connection. The advantage is the size of the connector - only small connector with a few pins (can't remember how many, but it's only about 6) - which means that you can get several SerialATA connectors in the same space as 2 or 4 IDE connectors. At the moment, they are limited to 133Mb/s, but that's more a limitation of motherboard designs (i.e. the SerialATA controllers are connected via the PCI bus). Second gen SerialATA should transfer at 300Mb/s...can't wait Rgds AndyF

Active Directory: Is it compelling on a small network?
AndyFair replied to mthaler's topic in Networking
I would also add that while your company may not be big enough for AD now, it's likely to grow, so that in the future the requirement for AD is more pressing. Surely it's easier to install AD now, and allow it to "grow" with the company, rather than have to change everything in one sudden hit in a couple of years?! Sometimes you have to look forward as well as looking at the present. Rgds AndyF -
erm...no...think about it: if you're logged onto the server in terminal services, then you reboot to start the .NET install...and as soon as you reboot, Terminal Server kicks you off, and you can't get back on because Windows hasn't restarted... The only way to install is in person. AndyF
