It's a short-range wireless technology, primarily for communication between peripherals. Microsoft have just launched a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo, 3Com do a Bluetooth parallel port print adapter, and of course the most quoted Bluetooth accessory, the mobile phone headset. Look out for Bluetooth drivers coming to a Windows update near you soon! The driving idea behind Bluetooth is to eliminate the clutter of wires at the back of a PC-user's desk. It's been a long time coming (first Bluetooth devices were announced 2-3 years ago), and it still has some teething problems, but I think it will take off... Have a look at Bluetooth SIG for more info on the specs. Hope this helps, Rgds AndyF

Hate to be a "me too", but I've got to hand it to you Philipp - nice look! Just 2 gripes: make the background of the logo transparent (looks strange, a white square on a cream background); also the news links on the front page no longer open up in a new window. Just 2 very, very small grips - otherwise, good job!! Rgds AndyF

Full duplex is obviously better - it means that the network card can transmit and receive at the same time. However, it is dependent on the other network cards/hubs/routers etc. also being capable of full duplex. If you can, I would set the card to auto-detect - that way, you can always be sure that the card will set at a speed that can communicate with whatever it's attached to. Rgds AndyF

Quote: Well, I formatted, and the problem is still there. I installed the 40.72 drivers first before doing anything else and the display panel tab just crashes everytime saying a dll could not be run as an app. So, all my games are dark at high res as I can't change the gamma level. Homer Bear in mind that the Detonator 40s are still beta. I would see if there is somewhere you can let nVidia know about the problem (unfortunately, there's nothing in the driver's readme...), then drop back to the 3082 version... AndyF

I don't know about the versions of the admin pack, but it could be that you're trying to install it over a beta of SP1 rather than the full SP1 release? AndyF

problems with hardware (HDD?) when trying to install winxp
AndyFair replied to Gregor's topic in Hardware
Which connector is the hard drive plugged into - IDE1/IDE2 or IDE3/IDE4 Do you know what HDD controller is installed on the board? If it's an IDE RAID controller, you may need to set up the hard drive in that before it will be recognised by the system. Just a couple of other things to try. AndyF -
Quote: thnx 4 reply! yea the bios is faulty for sure but the problem is i cant get into dos cuz my floppy drive all of a sudden stopped working!! i get the "I/O error remove disk and press any key"-error does anyone have an idea what may have caused this? could it be a voltage/power problem or whatever cuz half of the times i boot up bios doesnt recognize all of my devices(cdrw,dvd,hd40gb,hd8gb..) anyone? I/O error could be either a dodgy disk (have you tried another one?) or a non-bootable disk, or (sounds more likely) that you have a faulty floppy drive. Best thing I would suggest is like Mr Guvernment - try to boot off a CD, then flash from there. Is this the result of a failed BIOS upgrade, or has it just started happening, apropos of nothing? If that fails, there are some companies who can provide replacement BIOS EPROMs - I would try your mobo manufacturer as the first point of call. Rgds AndyF

Windows 2000 installation and promise ata 100 problem
AndyFair replied to aegris's topic in Hardware
Quote: Except?... win2k has decided to make the promise controller, the video card, sound card, network and both USB controllers ALL IRQ 9.. and it was doing that even before the promise driver was installed (or rather, after I uninstalled one of the many). It is certainly not the default config in BIOS, or on the Linux system that shares the hard disk. Just when you think you're getting to know one system, along comes a different set of quirks. Cameron. W2k & XP both use IRQ sharing - it's perfectly normal to see most of your cards using the same IRQ. Rgds AndyF -
Windows XP: How do I get the ALT + ( A Letter) to stay visib
AndyFair replied to Christianb's topic in Hardware
Go to Display properties, go to the Appearance tab, then click on Extended or Advanced (can't remember, typing this on aW2k workstation). There is an option to hide the underline until Alt is pressed, just unselect this. Rgds AndyF -

The first 2 are AOL (AC82EBE1.ipt.aol.com and AC9A2328.ipt.aol.com), the third is dialup-67.26.41.244.Dial1.NewOrleans1.Level3.net and the last is p50902C88.dip.t-dialin.net Without much investigation, looks like they're just "regular" port scans from wannabe hackers...on dialup connections ;( AndyF

Quote: Quote: Don't care about the orginal setup. That's 4 years old. Just don't want to wipe the bios if it was still on the drive like older Compaqs. I removed the IDE cable from the dsrive and booted to a floppy ok. I assume that means the bios IS on the MB, since if it was on the HD the MB wouldn't even post, correct? Correct. No, I don't think this is correct. The partition doesn't store the BIOS per se - AFAIK, it only stores the program to change the BIOS. So the PC would boot fine without the partition (or the original hard drive), but you wouldn't be able to change any of the BIOS settings. AndyF

I'm not sure it can be deleted - I think that some Compaq machines also use a small partition to hold the BIOS program - so deleting the partition may also render your PC useless. Rgds AndyF

So what you want to do is just plug a headset into the passthrough port on the back of the modem rather than a whole phone, and when the phone rings, click a button on your desktop (or the modem autoanswers or whatever)and the phone picks up and you talk as normal...? Nope, can't say I've heard of anything like that. You may want to look at some headset manufacturers such as Plantronics or GN Netcom to see if they do something suitable... Rgds AndyF

Quote: Just DL it. Rahter interesting game. EQ in space. THe ships are kinda cool and the character models are kinda nice. Anyone else testing it? I installed the beta over the weekend - 800Mb download, followed by a further 300Mb patch process! Started playing, only to have my character wiped (apparently the last pwipe before the games goes live) after a couple of hours! I like the idea of the Founders Federation though (all beta testers that create characters between now and when the game goes live become members of the Founders Federation, and get a cool decal to put on their ship), and hope they do some more with it in the future... I have to say it looks a lot better than EQ, can't comment on gameplay yet, haven't really got beyond the training missions yet. I like the idea that you don't just get experience for killing things (which, after all, can get a bit boring after a while ) Rgds AndyF

The: What Computer Part did you buy this week thread

Quote: Anyone get the feeling that 2003 is gonna be a BIG year for hardware advances? I do... apk Between AMD's ClawHammer & HyperTransport, and the next gen nVidia chipset (NV3x, which is supposedly moving further towards photorealism...) it's going to be a great year! Also with .NET server on the back-end, Microsoft will finally get more AD installations (many companies have still not completed a full AD installation because of the limitations of the Win2k implementation, and .NET server apparently goes a long way towards solving those problems!!) ...Anyway, what did I buy this week? Well, I caved in and bought a Logitech wireless keyboard & optical mouse combo - and I love it! It makes such a difference not to have to worry about whether the cables will reach, where you're sitting. I think it's got to be one of my best purchases this year!! I've also got my eye on a DRD-RW/DVD+RW drive but I might wait a bit until the prices drop a bit further. Rgds AndyF -

Need information on building and running an Email Server
AndyFair replied to Mr.Guvernment's topic in Software
Quote: Quote: Also, the cost of Exchange vs mDaemon vs argosoft is also negligible, so go for whichever option suits you best! Rgds AndyF I would love to know where you shop, as a free one from Argosoft vs. the cheapest baseline MS Exchange is about $3K US never seem to be negligible where I go... What I meant is that compared to $1000 per e-mail outage caused by the ISP, the cost of any e-mail server software will have paid for itself in the first year - so in that respect, the overall cost of the software is neglible with regard to the savings made... Of course, looking at the cost of the various packages on their own, it's a totally different picture - $88 for Argosoft Pro, $2000 for mDaemon unlimited users, and thousands of dollars for a fully-fledged Exchange server...not much of a choice, is there? Need information on building and running an Email Server
AndyFair replied to Mr.Guvernment's topic in Software
OK, some definitions: An A record, is a pointer or alias record. So, for example, you could have mail.yourdomain.com pointing to the same address as yourdomain.com...(I think I've got that right, it's a while since I've had to think about things like definitions!!) A MX record is the Mail Exchanger record. This tells the world (via the various DNS servers around the world) what your mail server IP address and name is so that you can receive e- mail. The whole point of this is that some e-mail servers are lazy, and automatically try mail.blah.com as the first option, rather than looking up the MX record for a domain. Bear in mind that your ISP is likely to charge you for transferring the domains to yourself, as well as the cost of registering the domains to your own IP addresses - but if it's costing you $1000 every time your ISP crashes, then this cost is negligible!! Also, the cost of Exchange vs mDaemon vs argosoft is also negligible, so go for whichever option suits you best! Rgds AndyF -

AndyFair replied to Mr.Guvernment's topic in Software
If you're wanting to run your own e-mail server, you need to make sure that you get the MX record for your internet domain modified so that it points correctly to your mail server, and not to your ISP's. Since you'll need a server with a permanent Internet connection, you'll also need to make sure that it's properly firewalled, and properly segregated from the rest of the LAN. Can't help with software, I'm afraid - I use MDaemon, but it collects from a POP account from my ISP. Rgds AndyF -
What's your home page set to? Rgds AndyF

Yeah, it started off as a good idea, being able to run WIndows software on a Linux installation, but then all of a sudden they stopped talking about that and suddenly it's just another Linux variant. Bummer, I was really looking forward to what they could have done ;( AndyF

What motherboard are you using? One other thing that springs to mind is that your mobo has USB2 ports - which you'll need drivers from your mobo manufacturer to use - although they are usually identified in Device Manager as USB2, it's just that Windows doesn't have drivers for them. AndyF
