Quote: Yeah, this is like errr.. I forget which company, that reckoned they had the patent on hyperlinks or something like that. Was it BT? I don't know what officially happened about their claim, but all they seemed to achieve was becoming the inspiration for a bunch of jokes & did themselves a bit of PR damage. Yes, it was BT, they claimed they had invented the idea of hyperlinks years before the WWW. All of a sudden, just as BT's profits were starting to take a nose dive, they "discover" this patent. Rather than try and take someone like the W3C or the IETF to court for patent infringement (or any other non-profit org, from which they would get no money), they decide to take some major US ISPs to court for patent infringement. Last I heard, it had got as far as the courts, but it's all gone quiet since then. I think that's what happened anyway - I could be wrong (and probably am more than I like to admit ) AndyF

OK, here's one...happened a few years ago, still cracks me up when I think about it... Get a call from a woman who complains that when she types stuff, the wrong things appear on the screen. I walk over to her desk, thinking that maybe the keyboard was dying, or it was using the wrong layout... When I get there, I find that she was complaining that everything she typed appeared in upper case, and the only problem was that she had CAPS lock on... AndyF

Could it be, possibly, that with W2k & XP, MS finally have a set of OSes that "does exactly what it says on the tin"? AndyF PS Apologies for the quote marks, it won't make sense if you don't live in the UK...

If you're using roaming profiles, the solution is easy - you can copy straight over from the version stored on the server. Alternatively, physically disconnect from the network then logoff. Reconnect the network connection and log back on, it should ask you if you want to use your local profile, just say no. Of course, if you're not using roaming profiles, then basically you're buggered... AndyF

Quote: Only with a Mac do you get an operating system built by the same people who built the computer it runs on. Apart from Sun, IBM, HP, SGI... ...and anyway, I thought MacOS X was a version of Unix - so Apple are saying they wrote Unix? AndyF

Can you empty your Temp Internet folder from within Internet Explorer, or empty the folders manually (through Windows Explorer)? What happens when you reboot, does chkdsk do its thing? Does it come up with any errors? Need info! AndyF

Crucial.com has a UK-based site - you're better off going for named brands like Crucial, Kingston etc. rather than the un-named stuff. It may cost more, but it will save you no end of headaches - especially if you're using an OS that is more memory intensive, such as Win2k or XP. Rgds AndyF

We'll just have to wait and see...if England do win, I can't see many people turning up to work on Friday I'm Welsh anyway, so I'm just sulking because we have such a cr@p football team The one thing that has made this World Cup so interesting is the fact that so many of the "top flight" teams went out so early - I think for once, we have a truly "World" Cup - with teams from 4 out of 5 continents getting past the group stages. The best World Cup we've had in years, I think it will be remembered for a long time to come, not for who wins, but because it was so interesting!! AndyF

All I can say is that unless England have been holding back up until now, they haven't got a snowball's chance against Brazil... AndyF

Just a shot in the dark, but have you done a virus check? AndyF

The worst ones are the people who think they're competent, and end up screwing everything up beyond repair...and then you tell them the best thing to do would be to reinstall, and they look at you as though they're mad... ...and then you get the people whose hard drives look like a rat's nest - files saved in any old place, no structure at all - and then they tell you that they can't find a file they saved... ...and then, of course, there are the people that are still using some really obscure piece of software, that wasn't even popular 10 years ago, and they expect to know everything about it... I'll stop now before my blood pressure gets any higher! But anyway, like most other people here, I no longer tell people that I work in IT - I just say that I work for a "call centre company" and leave it at that. AndyF

What do you consider the best computer game ever made?

The concept of a "world cup" may need some explaining for our friends across the water... You see, the world cup really does mean that countries from all over the world compete together - unlike the American World Series, which doesn't (and no, including Canada in the World Series still doesn't make it world wide!) I'm going to run for cover now... Anyway, England are playing Argentina at the moment - and the roads outside are eerily empty of cars, the shops are closed or empty and there are no queues at the supermarket checkouts. They reckon that absenteeism from people skiving to watch the football will cost British industry £1bn... AndyF

Depends on what your budget is - APC do cheap UPS models too - and it's got to be cheaper than the cost of a new mobo !! The APC Back-UPS ES 350VA will cost around $40, and will give you around 5-10 minutes backup time and has a USB connection to the PC, allowing for automatic file-saving and shutdown as soon as the UPS kicks in. And of course you get the $25k protection plan (although I'm not sure what the catch is... ) Belkin also does UPS (again, around the $40 mark), similar specs to the APC models. Have a look at their respective websites (APC & Belkin) for more info. Hope this helps AndyF

Yeah, it's crazy - an advert gets banned because 136 people out of millions of viewers complain... Sometimes there's such a thing as too much democracy AndyF

Sounds like you definitely have problems caused by a power spike - either down the phone line, or through the power socket. Sounds too coincidental to be anything else. You say you have decent quality power strips, but are they surge protected? If they are protected, does the manufacturer offer any kind of warranty (I know APC strips are guaranteed, don't know if any other suppliers are)? Rgds AndyF

Quote: It was a lot better than Episode 1, and it actually made Episode 1 worth getting once this second one hits DVD. Yeah, apparently George Lucas has said that he now realises that Episode I was too commercial and didn't have much of a storyline... Can't wait to see it, but I'll probably leave it a week or so for the queues to shorten AndyF

Take a look at PStill - you can set it up so that you can print PDFs straight from Word. It's not free, but only costs $23 - which is much cheaper than Acrobat! If you don't like that, set up a PostScript printer to save to a file, then go to ps2pdf and convert it on the fly; not an option if you have a lot of files to convert though. Rgds AndyF
