You may also want to try using an external powered USB hub - some USB devices try to draw more power than the mobo can supply, and the mobo usually goes into "shell shock"... AndyF

cant get XP pro to turn off computer...HELP
AndyFair replied to woz_mann's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Have you installed Easy CD Creator from Roxio/Adaptec? I had this kind of problem until I uninstalled EasyCD, and everything went back to normal. Apparently, the program works fine as long as you don't install DirectCD (conflicts with WinXPs version of DirectCD?) but I haven't got around to trying that yet. Rgds AndyF -
Damn! Now you've let the secret out, anybody will be able to get their systems working by themselves! Looks like I'm out of a job... AndyF

Do you people learn nothing? Last time somebody asked a question like this, he came back! Just be careful what you wish for AndyF

Two complete PCs, several more in various states of disrepair AndyF

Also make sure you have the ribbon cable plugged in correctly - the blue connector should be plugged into the motherboard/controller. Rgds AndyF

So basically the answer to the original post is "yes or no, depending on what you mean"? AndyF

As well as the bog-standard version of NAV, Norton also do a corporate version. This includes scheduled AV updates, updates of client AV files, live scanning etc. McAfee also do a similar corporate version of their AV products. I also use Command Software's F-PROT software, which also comes in various corporate editions. The only problem with these apps is that they cost much more than the consumer versions, and you're also liable to pay a license fee per client or server machine. For example, Symantec charges around $25 per license, with a minimum of 10 licenses. Unfortunately, to get anything to run on Win2k server you'll probably have to buy the corporate editions of the software - which means major costs! However, in light of the recent spate of viruses which seem to target servers more than client machines, I think protecting the server is paramount, especially if that server is acting as an Internet proxy. Hope this helps, AndyF PS - Update - I've just checked the Command website, and they do free 30-day trials of their AV software, including the server versions - check it out here

In which case no, it isn't compatible with XP. You may be able to get it to install, but I wouldn't trust it not to hose your system completely. AndyF

Annoying: The transparent icons built in XP
AndyFair replied to Zwine's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Alternatively, is there a way to change the colour of the icon text? Can anybody enilghten us? AndyF -
Whether a network card is ISA or PCI doesn't make a difference to networking. The only downer with ISA is that I'm not sure that you'd be able to get a 100Mbps card - but for gaming, 10Mbps is more than adequate (some people cope with 56k connections for gaming!) AndyF

The only disadvantge I could see is if the partition table on the hard drive was damaged in some way. However, I've never, ever, seen that happen yet (touches wooden desk, just to make sure ). Let's face it, if that ever did happen, your disk drive was probably on the way out anyway!! AndyF

Try reinstalling EZ-CD without DirectCD - I have seen somewhere that XP doesn't like DirectCD (perhaps doesn't like living with the XP version of DirectCD). Also make sure that you have patched EZ-CD to the latest version (I think current version is 5.02). AndyF

Nero uses it's own ASPI layer (it stores a copy of wnaspi32.dll in the install directory). I've heard tell that WinOnCD and CDRWin will work if you copy this file into their respective install directories. AndyF

If by Norton 7 you mean Norton 2002, then yes, it is fully compatible with XP. Previous versions won't be though. AndyF

$6?? I wish - here in the UK, they cost somewhere between £8 & £12 (that's about $12-$18)...compare that to 50p per CD-R And the added advantage is that almost every PC comes fitted with a CD drive; not all of them have Zip drives! No competition - CD-R all the way AndyF

I thought TWAIN was an OpenSource type thingy - it stands for Technology Without An Interesting Name (honestly ), which is the kind of name those wacky OpenSource people like to use AndyF

Version 6 will screw up your PC because XP uses NTFS 5.1 which is different to NTFS5 (which is what Win2k uses). Just because you managed to get the program to install doesn't mean that it will work - because of the differences between NTFS5 & NTFS5.1, if you try to use PM6, you will hose your hard drive. This counts even if you are trying to convert the partition to FAT32. (That's what FatFish was also saying) I'm not sure if PM7 works on XP - best check out PowerQuest's website. Rgds AndyF

The downside to NTFS is that there is a slight performance hit compared to FAT32; the upside is that NTFS is more resilient and stable than FAT32, so if your machine does crash, you're much less likely to lose data with NTFS. I also believe (although I may be wrong) that FAT32 is not so suitable for large hard drives as the cluster size increases as the partition size increases. What this means is that you are more likely to have slack space on a hard drive with FAT32 than with NTFS. Personally, I would always go with NTFS; on a modern, speedy PC with fast hard drive, the performance hit is negligible and is a small price to pay for data security. Rgds AndyF

how to move all clients documents n settings to server ?
AndyFair replied to oaydin's topic in Networking
As far as I know, the My Documents and Start Menu settings are included in the roaming profile that gets stored on the server. Basically, anything that's in the user's folder under c:\Documents and Settings gets transferred. Rgds AndyF -
Quote: You don't think it does this because it finds another pc on the network with the same serial key do you? Shouldn't make any difference. In a real life corporate network, every machine on the network will have the same serial key! AndyF

Check in the Device Manager - is the old hard drive still listed, but with a question mark or red cross? If so, remove it and see whether that makes a difference. If not, can't think of what else could be causing the slow down. The only other thing I could suggest is to do a clean install onto the new hard drive without the old drive in the system. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help, Rgds AndyF

XP 64-bit is a version of XP written for Itanium - I think at the moment, there are only plans to release a server version. First beta release is (I think) due to be release at the same time as XP 32-bit versions are being released. AndyF

Work brilliantly for me too - solved a few niggling problems like sound quality. Creative could learn a thing or two from Turtle Beach!! AndyF
