Hmmm. All we need now is a motherboard with 2 AGP slots so we can get good performance out of both video cards. AndyF

I use BlackIce under Win2k and love it, but unfortunately Network Ice are refusing to support WinXP until the retail version is out. A little short sighted, I think, but it is the best out there, so there's not much else we can do. AndyF

Not to mention the fact that nVidia didn't buy out the whole of 3Dfx, only selected portions of it's technology. They don't own the rights to the Voodoo cards, that's still with 3Dfx (or whoever) - and unfortunately 3Dfx have gone broke since the deal with nVidia. Sorry, but I don't see how that's got anything to do with nVidia. At no point did nVidia ever say that they would continue to develop or support 3Dfx products - and I don't see why they would if they don't own the company... Just my 2 cents worth... AndyF

Event Viewer: "Driver failed to load..." makin me
AndyFair replied to Ron_Jeremy's topic in Software
Have you tried searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base for the Event ID? That may shed a bit more light on your problem... The other thing to do is to re-enable all the services you have disabled, then diable them one by one and see which one causes the problem to appear again. That option will take a long time though!! Baldurs Gate 2: TOB crashes back to desktop FREQUENTLY! Any
AndyFair replied to pr-man's topic in Games
I've played it on XP with no problems at all. Also what hardware/drivers? Crashing back to the desktop sounds suspiciously like a video driver problem...? Can't help more without extra info. Rgds AndyF -
Quote: Which ones? The 14.xx are supposed to work quite well, specifically the 14.70's. Indeed, if you look at the readme file, it specifically says that the drivers are for Win2k AND WinXP use. Glad to see some hardware manufacturers are on the XP ball! Rgds AndyF

Quote: Using the 8.05 drivers, I was able to muster 68 FPS in Q3 which was no better than my V3/3000! The drivers supplied with WinXP suck big time. The latest Detonators (14.x) will give you the speed boost you need. Rgds AndyF

Likewise - bought SystemWorks 2002, and at last I have some protection on XP! AndyF

I wouldn't recommend putting 2 OSes onto the same partition - it can be done, but is likely to be the cause of major headaches. Also (at least as far as I know) Win98 only likes to be installed on the first partition (drive C) - doesn't like going anywhere else. Which means, unfortunately, that you're going to have to reinstall Win2k as well. You'll have to install Win98 to the primary partition, then install Win2k to an extended partition - and you don't need to worry about boot loaders, because Win2k will take care of that for you. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help. Rgds AndyF

Norton Utilities/Systemworks 2002 has just been released, and is XP compatible. Rgds AndyF

Once you've installed 98, and assuming you have no special options in your boot.ini, you should just be able to boot from the Win2k CD, choose repair, go to the recovery console and type "fixboot" This should put the correct boot files back onto the Win98 partition so that you dual boot. If you have any special options in the boot.ini, copy it somewhere safe then replace the fixboot version with the old copy. Hope this helps, AndyF

When you say "latest version of DirectX", do you mean 8.0a or 8.1? 8.1 is still in beta, and is not an official release yet, so that may be why you're getting that message. Just a thought, AndyF

Quote: Interesting - I never noticed that it was missing until now... That's bizarre - neither did I!! I just went on the assumption that it's been there since Win95, so why remove it? Ah well, that will teach me to check before I type AndyF

OK - it could be a problem with autosensing - try forcing both cards to use either 10 or 100Mbps and see if that helps. It could be that, since it's a direct connection, the autosensing has problems sensing cable speed when the other PC is off, so it stops trying - in effect, 1 NIC is saying "What speed are you running at?", and since the other PC is off, it's not getting a response, so just sits and sulks. Using a hub would solve the problem because the it would always be there to say "Here I am, I run at 10Mbps" - and no more sulks! Of course, I'm probably spectacularly wrong (it happens with amazing regularity ) AndyF

I'm using XP perfectly well without the 4-in-1's at the moment, but that doesn't mean that I don't need them! If you look at the last couple of releases of the NVidia Detonator drivers, the readme says that they are written for Win2k & XP - I'm using the latest version with no hiccups at all (they're better than the version that ships with XP). TweakUI allows you to remove entries from the Add/Remove Programs list without having to touch the registry. Rgds AndyF

That's the clincher - NTFS is a more stable filesystem than FAT, and it's more difficult to screw the whole hard drive as the result of a crash - so I always use NTFS, even on my home PCs, for safety's sake! AndyF

Does anyone know the OEM release date of Win XP?
AndyFair replied to PsychoSword's topic in Software
Yes, and according to articles (can't remember where), MS had a ceremony on Friday where Bill Gates handed gold disks containing Windows XP RTM code to their favoured resellers (Dell, Compaq etc.) AndyF -
Does anyone know the OEM release date of Win XP?
AndyFair replied to PsychoSword's topic in Software
Steve Ballmer is convinced XP will be finished by this Friday. See the article here Rgds AndyF -
NetBEUI is included on the XP disk, but it's not part of the standard install as MS are no longer supporting it. I think it's in the Extras folder of the CD but can't remember exactly where off the top of my head. Rgds AndyF

Any way to make ghost see nfts partitions to store the image
AndyFair replied to rgodart's topic in Software
This command only works from the command prompt in Win2k, and only converts the partition to NTFS format. It does not allow you to read or write to an NTFS partition from DOS6 or PC-DOS, which is what Ghost uses, and which is the problem that rgodart has. AndyF With his pedantic hat on -
The ability to change the font and button sizes in WinXP is the same as in other Windows versions, but is hidden from the average Joe User - go to Display Settings->Appearance->Advanced. I think this is right - at work right now on a Win2k machine, but will confirm when I get home. Rgds AndyF

Hellbringer As a general guideline, every time you get a BSOD and a file is listed that isn't NTOSKRNL, search your harddriev for the file. Where it is located may give you some indication as to the program that's causing the crash. Alternatively, right clicking the file and selection properties, then going to the version tab will tell you what the file does, and where it came from. This way, you'll be able to know exactly which apps are causing the BSOD. Hope this helps for the future, Rgds AndyF

I've just had ADSL installed at home (yeah!!), but I'm having problems with the Alcatel USB Speedtouch... Everything works fine for about the first 10meg of data downloaded (doesn't matter the source - websites, ftp, anything) and then the modem just hangs. If I try to disconnect, nothing happens, and when I try to shutdown, windows has a problem shutting down "Taskbar Connections" - I end task, shutdown carries on normally but then hangs on the "Saving Windows Settings" box. Nothing else happens, and I have no choice but to kick the reset button. Does anybody else have this problem, or is it just me? I'd love to be able to go out and get another ADSL modem, but this being the UK, we're not allowed to Hoping somebody can help before I go mad, AndyF
