Win2k on Pentium-1 200MHz... 8) erm...good luck! Seriously, what's the memory like? Also, you say your friend has disabled the onboard graphics - has he also disabled the sound too? Have you looked on Gateways website for help (OK, I know, silly question - you might as well go and ask a sheep for help) Other than that, I can't offer any help - I'm still in a state of shock that anybody would try to run Win2k on a machine that old Please, let us know if you get them working, also let us know what they run like AndyF

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that both the SETI startup and the Office startup files both live in the Startup area of the start button. Delete the shortcuts from \Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup Saves all the nasty mess with the registry 8) AndyF

Any way to make ghost see nfts partitions to store the image
AndyFair replied to rgodart's topic in Software
Because the "working" part of Ghost is based around DOS, there is no way of making it write to NTFS files without another program like NTFSDOS (although you would need the full version at $249, which also appears to need *2* floppies...!). As you say, the problem is that Ghost takes up a lot of memory, certainly not enough to load something as equally large as NTFSDOS, even if you were to strip out things like the mouse driver. Looks like you're stuck in FAT mode, I'm afraid... I know this probably isn't the answer you're looking for, and I know it's what everyone suggested on your previous thread...but would DriveImage be able to do this? Rgds AndyF -
Just to update you - I installed the latest 4-in-1 drivers, and everything is working fine now - ADSL has been up for an hour now with no probs. What gave me the clue was that the modem was working perfectly under both Linux and XP, so the problem could only be caused by something in Win2k. According to the troubleshooting list, the only non-hardware problem was the 4-in-1s. Anyway, I'm now happily surfing - thanks for your help Uykucu. Rgds AndyF

First things first: never upgrade operating systems, always do a clean install. You'll save yourself hours of headaches if you do a clean install. This goes for any operating system - with an upgrade, you are trying to squeeze one OS into another, and things invariably get squeezed in the wrong way, or don't manage to fit! Even if you do upgrade (and you'll be going against the advice of every member of this board!), I doubt that you'll be able to uninstall WinXP - you'd have to reinstall Win2k from scratch. The best way of installing 2 OSs on one computer is to partition your hard drive into 2 (or more) partitions, install Win2k to the first partition and WinXP to the 2nd partition. This way, when you decide to get rid of XP, all you have to do is format the partition! Hope this helps, AndyF

Still no sign of my Preview copy of RC-1 over here in the UK
AndyFair replied to yakkob's topic in Software
Bearing in mind that we've just had RC1 6 weeks after the rest of the world, I wouldn't hold my breath if I was you!! We'll probably get the 120day eval around Christmas time! AndyF -

I'm not sure about RC2, but I seem to remember that the registration page said we would get the latest beta ASAP, then RC1 when it came out. The bummer is that we didn't get the latest beta first, and we've only just received RC1 when the rest of the world is playing with RC2. Next time I'll register for the beta program!! Rgds AndyF -

I've found some info on this site - for anyone who wants to know anything about ADSL in the UK, I can highly recommend it! My responses are in colour [size:18]I’ve heard that VIA motherboards dont work with the USB modem?[/color] The VIA chipsets used in a number of motherboards have exhibited problems with the Alcatel modem and a number of fixes have been known to work. The list is (a) Try newer drivers Current drivers on website are the same as on the install CD? ( Turn Enhance Chip Performance on in the BIOS via CPU Soft Menu Will try that (d) Turn off assign IRQ to USB Will try that (e) Download the latest BIOS upgrade for your motherboard (it's reported that upgrading to the ZT bios can help) Will try that (e) Install latest 4 in 1 drivers Will try that (f) Change USB port used, if you have 4 ports try all four Have tried that (g) Add a powered USB hub and plug the modem into this Have tried that (h) remove other USB devices from the PC Have tried that (i) Use an additional PCI-USB adapter card that does not have a VIA chipset, Belkin and Lucent cards have been found to work well. Don't really want to go through that hassle I'll let you know how I get on. AndyF

Thanks for the help - I was thinking that it was a USB problem. I haven't responded before now cos I've been on holiday. I read somewhere that the Alcatel modem, despite the fact that it's supposed to be USB compliant, occasionally draws more power than it's supposed to, and so gets shut down by the system...I tried putting the modem onto my USB hub, but still get problems. I've had no problems with USB until now (and yes, I do have a VIA chipset). I've tried reinstalling the drivers, even downloaded the versions from Alcatel's website, but still having problems. I might try up[censored] to the latest VIA 4-in-1s and see if that makes a difference? Thanks AndyF

The disk arrived here this morning too! What fun I'll have tonight when I get home!!! No apology enclosed with the CD though - nothing along the lines of "Microsoft UK apologise profusely for sending you RC1 when the rest of the world has RC2. We will be committing hari kiri to atone for our sins in this matter." Don't suppose we'll ever hear from MS again... Rgds AndyF -
BladeRunner I wouldn't even dream that you would give out your username and password - I'm an honest kind of a guy It was more about how you managed to get download access - and now it all makes sense - you're a beta tester. Us mere motrals can't get download access from the UK - so we're stuck here twiddlng our thumbs, waiting for MS to get off it's arse and sort the CDs out...while the rest of the world gets to revel in the glorious technicolour screens of XP... Not that I'm jealous or anything AndyF
-
Just a question - how did you manage to get access to the download from the UK - I thought it was only available to people in the US/Canada? I'm bored of waiting for my CD to arrive from MS (see this thread) and would love to be able to get my hands on XP. Do tell, please! Thanks AndyF

The only way to revert to FAT32 is to backup the data onto tape, CD-R or whatever, format the drive using FAT32 then copy the data back. The file formats are so different that it's not possible to revert without formatting. AndyF

I wouldn't mourn the lack of Channel 5 - you're not missing much! As for ware3z sites, I haven't got the patience to sit through all the p0rn popups, only to find that the app you downloaded is riddled with viruses. I'd rather spend the cash and have a virus-free system! Still no sign of my WinXP CD yet, so I can only assume that MS were telling porkies when they said CDs were being sent on the 20th... Not a happy bunny AndyF -
Quote: eh? 17th July 2001 01:09 was the date/time of the original post. Am I missing something? OK, so call me Mr Blind and slap me with a kipper... I was looking at the wrong place, and saw JMD's registration date and got confused and...and... Just goes to show that humans can't multitask as well as PCs...despite what my wife says:D AndyF

Antoine I would have hoped that, after making the original post over a year ago, that JMD had made the upgrade by now... If not, that's a serious case of delaying!! Just joking AndyF

Hmmm...not entirely convinced - I too got the e-mail on Friday (which, by the way Microsoft, was the 27 July - a week after you say CDs are shipping...) - but the e-mail I posted above seems to tell a different story. So which one is true? I think it's terrible that we'll be getting our RC1 disks (finally) just as the rest of the world can download RC2 - but of course, unless you're in the US, you can't download the preview....it's almost enough to drive you to ***** sites... Deleted shared directories still trying to be shared?
AndyFair replied to JohnnyChangs's topic in Networking
An even easier way is to bring up a command prompt, and type: NET SHARE sharename /DELETE for each share you want to delete. If you just type NET SHARE, this will just show you what shares are set up on that computer. Much easier than messing around with the registry!! AndyF -
RAM Problem, please read (to at least be intrigued)
AndyFair replied to TheSpork's topic in Hardware
Had the same problem - ordered an upgrade to PC133 RAM, put it in, and Win2k BSODs (ntoskrnl died) - so I thought it was bad RAM, so got some more, and Win2k still still BSODs... So I put all the RAM in, reinstall Win2k, and everything's fine! Of course, I now have 640Mb RAM in my machine; sligtly more than I had intended, but I'm not complaining!!! So the moral of the story is that Win2k is vey sensitive about hardware changes... AndyF -
Win2k is really fussy about hardware changes - I recently upgraded to PC133 RAM, and had to do a clean install because Win2k wouldn't boot. How many versions did you jump when you upgraded the BIOS? Like the man says, you might be better off doing a fresh install, and see whether that helps... AndyF

GeForce cards work fine under XP & Win2k - if you don't want to use Creative drivers, you can always use Nvidia's own Detonator drivers (which is what the Creative drivers will be based on, anyway). You won't be able to find XP drivers (probably not for a couple of years at least!!!) AndyF
-
It's probably because Partitions Magic is not a native XP application - PowerQuest don't have any versions of Partition Magic that can run on XP (yet), and I certainly wouldn't recommend using it in compatibility mode. If you still have Win2k installed (dual boot), I recommend that you make the partition changes in 2k - it's much safer!! Otherwise, you could delete the Linux partitions using fdisk (I think it lists the ext2 partitions as "unknown"?), but that won't help you with expanding the XP partition into the empty space. Of course, you could always have 2 or 3 partitions instead of one big one - one for windows, one for data and one for games (or whatever). AndyF

The new Windows version.....necessary or just more bloatware
AndyFair replied to PsychoSword's topic in Software
Judging from the look at the interface, it appears that MS are aiming XP at the home market, despite releasing the Pro & Server versions too; from what I've read there's little to distinguish Win2kPro from XP Pro. However, despite targetting the home markets, I think that MS are leaving themselves wide open to attack from angry users, because XP is such a different beast to Win9x/ME - it's not going to be an easy upgrade for the "average Joe". It will require more memory, a better processor and more disk space than Win9x, and I'm sure the upgrade process from Win9x won't be any better than the upgrade to Win2k. Add to that the Activation as well, and Microsoft are in for a rather large headache come October... So what will I be doing? Well, I have the preview on order (I live in the UK, so no idea when it will turn up... )and I'll see how that goes; it may be the all the effort in getting Win2k stable and working might be worth something with XP, but on the other hand I don't know whether I have the energy to do it again so soon... AndyF -
Do you have "Automatically Reboot" turned on in the Startup & Recovery section of System Properties? If so, turn it off and you should be able to see if you are getting a BSOD. You could also try checking the Event Logs to see if anything was noted there before the system reset itself. Random reboots could be caused by so many things, I would wait and see if you get a BSOD, then search support.microsoft.com for the error code. Rgds AndyF
