Yes, just did a search for "Ghost", and the site returned "about 1000" hits. So I think it's safe to say that we already know about it But glad to see that someone else has discovered the joys of disk imaging!

2k3SBS, Exchange 2k3, SMTP will not send over internet, only locally
AndyFair replied to DaveLaRocque's topic in Everything New Technology
There are two possible causes for this, depending on how your SBS machine is set up. Is your SBS machine configured to send e-mail directly to the host, or is it going through a proxy machine (e.g. your ISP's mail server)? Is DNS set up correctly - can you ping external addresses from the server? -
Have you taken a look at the Knoppix website?

I second this - I'm bored of seeing threads that are years old, with a recent (and, as you say, often unrelated) post tagged onto the end. I would say the 4-6 weeks is the ideal age after which threads become automatically locked - if there haven't been any new posts by then, I would consider the thread closed. The only downside of this is that it may encourage new users to start a new thread about the same problem? While we're at it, is there any way to prevent new posts being started without a topic heading - to avoid the avalanche of posts we've had recently called "Untitled Thread"...

So, hang on - are you saying that you're getting no picture from the monitor, not even at the BIOS check? If so, that either means that the monitor cable isn't plugged in correctly, the graphics card isn't plugged in correctly, or your graphics card is fubar. But since you've swapped cards back, and it still doesn't work, I'd guess that either the monitor cable is fubar, or the monitor itself is. Can you try the monitor on a different PC, just to check? Cannot clone IDE drive to SATA drive in same system
AndyFair replied to stormonts's topic in Hardware
Reload the SATA drivers just to make sure - if Device Manager is only showing the IDE connectors, it looks as though it hasn't recognised the SATA connectors. It sounds like the drivers are your problem - they haven't been installed, and when Windows comes to loading the drivers, it doesn't know about SATA, and all of a sudden, the drive it was loading from has disappeared - hence the reason why it just stops there. Load the SATA drivers onto the IDE version of Windows, then do the clone - and it should work OK. Hope this helps Rgds AndyF -
Just goes to show that you should never click "yes" unless you know exactly what you're agreeing to!

In other words, if you connect pin 14 (old-style 20 pin connector) or pin 16 (new style 24-pin connector) - green wire - to any ground connector (black wires), the PSU will start - as long as the power lead is plugged in

Does this mean you're selecting the hard disk as the boot device? What you need to do is select the CD drive to be the first boot device. The XP disk is bootable, you shouldn't have to do any mucking around with floppy disks or DOS. If you have already selected the CD as the first boot device, it means that your XP CD is not being recognised. It is a kosher XP disk, with proper holograms and everything, isn't it?

First question: are you overclocking? Second question: is it just Asus probe that reports this voltage? The ATX 2.1 specification says that the max tolerance on +12v is 5% - so 13.6v is definitely out of spec! What about if you check what the BIOS is reporting? Some motherboard monitoring programs are not so hot at reporting what the motherboard is actually doing. Have you tried MBM instead? If BIOS is reporting the same voltage levels, the first thing to try would be to go into BIOS, and load the optimised defaults (you may have to go back and change a few things like disk boot order and the like) and see whether that makes any difference Report back and let us know whether that helped or not. Do you have more than one partition on the harddrive (i.e. when you go to my computer, do you have, say, a C: drive and a D: drive under the hard drive section? If so, you could copy any important information on the C drive onto the D drive, then just format the C drive when you re-install Windows.

thefoool, no the MAC code we're talking about here is an authorisation code that gives BT (the telecoms incumbent, and owner of most exchanges and equipment therein) and the new ISP the authorisation to switch the ADSL connection from the old ISP. Confusingly, it has nothing to do with NIC MAC addresses. x)

Ah, I see - so they're not actually encrypted as such, they just have permissions set to another user? If this is correct, and you have admin rights, you should just be able to do the following: - right click on the topmost folder - select properties - select the security tab - click on advanced - click the owner tab - click on your current username in the "Change owner to..." box - tick the box marked "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" - click Apply Hope this helps Rgds AndyF

I've also heard many terror stories about Tiscali - including the refusal to release the MAC codes that allow you to transfer your ADSL from one supplier to another, continuing to charge customers way beyond their cancellation date, and many other tales too horrible to repeat here. They were also, of course, the company that got their wrists slapped by Ofcom for describing 128k as broadband. Glad I could help with the recommendation, but remember: if it all goes tits up, you haven't seen me, right?

Are you using the trial version of AEFSDR? This version has limited functionality, and the ability to save unencrypted files somewhere else is probably one of those things that's been disabled. You need to decide whether access to your files is worth the $99 that this package costs. Rgds AndyF

All it needs now is to automatically go back to the page with your reply, rather than sticking on the " Posted. Click here to return to the thread" page... -
Unfortunately, Dell cases are non-standard, and the chances of you being able to install a non-Dell motherboard in it are slim. You'll need to buy a new case and PSU as well to be able to upgrade your motherboard. Sorry Rgds AndyF

ADSL problem - transfer rates anyone?
AndyFair replied to ScinteX's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Take a look at Zen - they guarantee no contention. In the four or so years I've been with them, I haven't had any problems at all (touch wood). -

Formatting and re-installing Windows won't necessarily get rid of that particular BSOD, because it looks as though it could be caused by software OR hardware. But, having said that, as long as you back up all of your important documents, it probably wouldn't do any harm just to reinstall. Hopefully, though, the CD burner was the cause of your problems, and they won't reappear. Let us know how you get on. Rgds AndyF

...although unfortunately the computer was destroyed moments before the calculation was due to be finished. However, the partial calculation was discovered to be "what do you get if you multiply six by nine" There is a theory that says that if both the question and the answer are both known together in the same universe, then the universe will explode and something even more wildly absurd will be created in its place. There are some that believe this has already happened at least once.

I don't know...I play DVDs through a projector onto a screen, and have a fairly decent surround sound setup, it comes close-ish to the cinema experience. All I need now is a house where I can leave it setup permanently, with the projector suspended from the ceiling, and the speaker wires hidden properly. I've just started subscribing to a DVD rental scheme in the UK - you pay a certain amount each month (gbp£10), make a list of the DVDs you want to watch, and they send you the first one on the list. You get to keep this for as long as you want; they don't send the next on the list until you've returned the film. We've found that it's a great way of catching up on films we wanted to see, but didn't necessarily want to buy until we'd seen them. Not only that, you don't have to wander to the video rental store, only to find that all the copies of the film you wanted to watch are unavailable ;( Rgds AndyF

There are number of things that could produce this kind of stop error - take a look at Microsoft's support pages to see if any of these problems relate to you. Rgds AndyF
