chkdsk not valid drive windows xp

Are your hard drives sitting on a SATA or RAID controller? If so, try moving them to a standard IDE port and see whether you can still see them. Rgds AndyF
  2. Just a stab in the dark here, but check the XP firewall settings for the other two users...? Rgds AndyF

Aliens not commin to my country!

I'm assuming that you mean you want to buy an AlienWare PC, but are complaining that they don't ship outside of the US (or any other country where they have operations). Well, sorry, can't help there - the only thing I could suggest is that you send them an e-mail asking what you can do - you may get lucky! Glad to see we're not having a "War of the Worlds" moment Rgds AndyF
  6. Trust me, Alex, you really don't want to see what I look like in real life. Enough to send women and children screaming! Rgds AndyF
  7. Well, I went to see it at the weekend, and I have to disagree with mthaler. It's a pastiche of the old 30s/40s sci-fi serials that they used to show on Saturday mornings on TV - you know, the kind where each episode ended with the hero falling off the edge of a cliff, and the next episode started with a what you didn't see our hero do kind of thing. Sky Captain brought back the memories of these films - cheesy as they were! I think it's a good film if you walk in through the door not expecting anything. If you're expecting high art, you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting a good time, you'll have one! Just my tuppence worth Rgds AndyF

    What DUPLEX am I running?

Well, if you can see the back of the PC, there's usually a light on the NIC that shows when it's in full-duplex mode (or it could also be one light that has a different colour for full-duplex mode) Your NIC driver may also have an applet that allows you to see what mode the card is running in too. XP Pro firewall......is it worth using?

I've read articles where people have had problems getting XP SP2 & ZA to coexist and play nicely. Rgds AndyF

Can you UNDO a Ghost Image???

Wow! Now I realise where I remembered the file.001 thing from. Spooky AndyF

XP Pro firewall......is it worth using?

The firewall under XP SP2 is better than it was originally, however, AFAIK it only analyses and blocks inbound packets. For some strange reason, the XP firewall doesn't analyse and block outbound packets - so you could be infected with a trojan, keylogger etc. and XP wouldn't even notice - not good. In my (ever so 'umble) opinion, I think you're probably better off staying with ZA, if only because it looks at inbound and outbound packets/ports. Rgds AndyF

Can you UNDO a Ghost Image???

I'm not entirely sure how Ghost works, but from memory it looks like it only copies sectors with data on them, as well as the file tables. If this is the case, Ghost probably only updated the file tables and didn't copy any actual data across. If you're lucky, you may be able to recover the data using a disk recovery package, but without the file tables all of the files will probably be called file.001, file.002 and so on. It may be easier in the long run to just start again... ;( AndyF

    Blast from the past!

I've just been out to the bank (it is pay day today after all!) and saw a really weird thing. When I got to the ATM, they'd obviously had problems, and were rebooting it. Being the geek that I am, I paused and watched the boot process, and a couple of seconds later the screen flashed up with an OS/2 Warp splash screen! This was a fairly new, colour screen ATM, not one of the older style green screen machines - so it seems OS/2 is alive and well! It was such a strange thing to see while walking down the high street, I just had to share it with you AndyF

My how the internet has changed

I remember using a modem on my old Commodore 64 - there was a BBS in the UK around mid-80s (I forget the name), and the modem ran at something like 300 baud - it used to take 3-4 minutes to complete one screenful (30 x 20 or whatever resolution of the C64 was). I used to think that was soooo cool 8) My first ever PC modem ran at 2800 baud, and I thought that was speedy - it used to take forever to download files that were only kilobytes in size - but that was before the days of CD's and burners. I remember when we moved from 5.25" disks to 3.5" disks and thought they were cool - 720k on one floppy was unheard of! And then when 3.5" went double sided...wow! I also remember when people still referred to hard disks as "Winchesters", and when the only language to program in was assembler... I'll stop now, this is making me feel old ;( Rgds AndyF
  17. If all 20 PCs are exactly the same spec, it's probably easiest to install one locally with all the drivers, apps etc. and then use Ghost to copy to all the other machines (bear in mind you will still need to go around and give each machine a unique name on the network). The advantage of using Ghost (or whatever) is that each machine on the network looks and works identically (in theory). If you keep a copy of the Ghost image, it's also useful when a machine starts misbehaving - just reimage the machine and hey presto! It works again - most of the time! Rgds AndyF

    Installing two hard drives

Sorry, by "disk mangler", I mean the Disk Management portion of the Computer Management applet (I remember the early days of NT, when Disk Manager was an awful app, and would mess up your disks more often than not - hence it used to be knows as "disk mangler" - thankfully, Disk Management now "does what it says on the tin") To get to Disk Management, select "Computer Management" from the Administrative Tools section on the Start Menu, then select Disk Management from the tree on the left. This will allow you to partition your drives, format them, assign letters, span them etc. There's no reason to use Partition Magic unless you want to resize "live" partitions. If you're using Ghost, that's another reason to have smaller partitions rather than one huge one. Hope this helps Rgds AndyF

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY RAM IS WORKING?????

Does the POST screen show the right amount of RAM? You may need to go into the BIOS to get the system to recognise the new RAM. Rgds AndyF

    Installing two hard drives

No, Server2003 install (in fact, any Windows install) will only format the drive/partition that it is installing itself onto - you'll need to set up the other drives and partitions using disk mangler once the install is complete. I would also recommend partitioning the drives to keep your OS/applications and data separate - that way, if you need to reinstall for any reason, you won't have to lose all your data too. Besides, Windows doesn't need anywhere near 200Gb! Rgds AndyF

Installing Server 2003 on PC instead of server

Originally posted by geek4u: Quote: I would think since this is an XP system that once I reformat the drive, I should be able to install the Server 2003 without compatibility issues As long as you're installing Server 2003 on a fairly recent system, you shouldn't have any problems...BUT be aware that some hardware (especially things like network cards) that works in XP doesn't necessarily work in Server 2003. When MS released Server 2003, they took the route of removing a lot of what it considered to be "legacy" hardware from the HCL Also, when you install Server2003, you don't need to worry about keeping a FAT32 partition for the ME clients - the clients don't care what format the server disks are. Hope this help Rgds AndyF

AGP 8X on ASUS intel 845pe chipset

According to Intel, the 845pe chipset has an AGP 4X interface which is "compatible with universal AGP8X graphics cards" This means that while you can install AGP 8X cards, and they will work, they will only ever be able to run at AGP 4X speeds. Sorry ;( Rgds AndyF

If the CD is scratched, no amount of free software will be able to read the disk - if the laser is being diverted by the scratch, software won't be able to compensate. Go out and by some Brasso Rgds AndyF
