    Clean install Win XP

The easiest thing yo do is just create a standard win9x bootdisk and then boot off that. The win98 natively install cd drivers, make sure you get smartdrive on the disk as well tho, otherwise you'll be waiting ages for the precopy to finish

    Slowwwwww Modem Port Speed

If your using the standard modem drivers, try using the ones written by US robotics, I'm not sure if your experiencing the old win9x bug where if you were using the standard modem driver, your connect speed would always be the same as the prot speed.
  10. Another handy UNIX feature that exists is file and directory name completion, it can be enabled using TweakUI Makes me feel so much more at home
  11. There is definitely a workaround for that, I'm sure there is a registry key allowing you to change it but I can't remember what it is. I speak from experience as i have a win2k pro machine that will allow 65533 here
  12. The most likely cause it that you have stopped one of the remote access services. Re-enable it and they should re-appear, just like starting and stopping the pirnt spooler
  13. Normally on via chipsets you'll get the best speed if you have 4 way bank interleving on, and 4 banks + of memory, so 2 double sided 128Mb sticks would give the best bandwidth Not sure about memory management by intel

    NTFS and automatic disk checks?

Sorry to burst your bubble Uykucu m8, but no file system is perfect, and clusters DO still get lost, although they can obviously be recovered by a disk check

    Booting 2K with Numlock ?

The far simpler way... Turn on numlock when in windows and shut down, when you log in the numlock will be on. It only turns iteslf off when your keyboard is detected during startup

Wave sound is the deafult windows audio driverso disabling it would most likely kill all sound, i'm not sure if you can use directsound as an alternative tho

    disabeling ACPI?

The only problem i have ever found with changing the kernel type from ACPI to standard PC is that APM WIL NOT WORK AFTERWARDS, even if it is enabled in BIOS. The legacy APM Interface node friver always fails to load, so i find it best to install as a standrd PC type on setup. Also I've never been able to go back to an ACPI configuration (Not that I'd want to), i've always got a BSOD on startup from ntoskernel

    Shutdown

When you say not shutting down, do you mean it just hangs when its saving settings / shutting down, or just leaves you with an "it is now safe to run off your computer" screen? Check in your power options that you have APM enabled if you are not using ACPI (which BTW sucks IMO). The other cause may be that you have a rogue app or service that is not shutting down and causing your system to hang. You can use something like X-Teq setup ,or manually change the registry keys to make the timeout shorter, and autokill dead hung apps. Hope this helps

    HDD Space

If its an NTFS drive it may be reserved space for the MFT, after a default install for my machine once i did a defrag and saw an enormous portion of my disk (about 7Gb) filled with "system files", it turned out to be reserved sapce for my MFT. I eventually managed to get rid of it by running the boot time defragmenter of Diskeeper, whichr educed it to about 200Mb
  21. Task scheduler is always a good one to set to disabled, i don't think i know anyone who uses it, it just sits and hogs resources

    Never Dial a Connection

Is this the standard IE app, or is there a shell being used by the software you use to dial up that may be setting itself to automatically dial?
  23. In my own personal experience NTFS is a superior file system to FAT32 The main problem with FAT32 is that when you create a file smaller than 32K in size, it will still take up 32K of clusters, due to the limits of the file system. FAT32 is slightly faster on smaller disks, because it doesn't have to adda ny extra flags / indexes to the files on it. However as the disk size and quantity on the disk increases, the speed with which the file system operates decreases significanlty. However although NTFS is marginally slower for small disks, the speed does not dgrade no matter how much is on the disk, due to the MFT structure it uses. The one drawback is that you can't read your disks in dos, although hopefully NT shouldn't pack up on you anyway
  24. You should be able to get into safe mode by whacking F8 when you get your boot menu, and then selecting it from the list. Whichever services you chagned to automatic you should set back to manual, if the system needs them, it will load them itself automatically when it boots. I've messed up my services before now, changing some of them has really weird effects, strangley enough the worst one to remove is event log, if you dtop that everything goes completely tits up. Check to make sure that it's still enabled Hope this helps
