Offline NT Password & Registry Editor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overview This is a utility to (re)set the password of any user that has a valid (local) account on your NT system, by modifying the crypted password in the registrys SAM file. You do not need to know the old password to set a new one. It works offline, that is, you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a floppydisk. The bootdisk includes stuff to access NTFS partitions and scripts to glue the whole thing together. Note: It will now also work with SYSKEY, including the option to turn it off! Why? NT stores it's user information including crypted versions of the passwords in a file called 'sam', usually found in \winnt\system32\config. This file is a part of the registry, in a binary format previously undocumented, and not easily accessible. But thanks to a German(?) named B.D, I've now made a program that understands the registry. As far as I know, Microsoft provides no way of changing the password if you cannot log in as someone with appropriate privileges, except restoring the registry files from the rescuefloppy. You don't forget passwords? You never get boxes to admin when someone quits suddenly? Your vendor delivers a preconfigured system to you, but never have "freak" accidents and lose the password they've set on it? If so, what are you doing reading this?? Go read propaganda from your favourite software vendor instead.

I haven't tried this on XP, but it works in Win2k. Start | Run \ mmc.exe Console | Add/Remove Snap-in. Add. Select "Group Policy". Click Add, then Finish. Click Close. Click OK. Click on the "+" sign next to "Local Computer Policy" in the left column. Click on the "+" next to "Windows Settings" in the "User Configuration" branch. Click on the "+" next to "Internet Explorer Maintenance". Select "Browser User Maintenance" on the left. The options in the right allow you to customize IE, including replacing the logo and animated logo (in both 22x22 and 38x38 pixel formats). To make the animated .BMP log, there is an free .exe file somewhere on MS's web site that will combine multiple .BMP's into an animated BMP. Enjoy.

You can download ZEN 2 Starter Pack for free use from Novell (http://webapps.novell.com/cgi-bin/custom...s_en&TEXT=0). It does most of the stuff of the full-blown version, minus remote control/view functionality. The current version, ZEN 3, has some new functionality, including remote imaging of workstations. At the University of Dayton, we are primarily a NetWare shop. We've used ZEN 2 successfully on a limited basis, but we are upgrading to ZEN 3 in a month or so. We currently have over 2000 student workstations in the tree, with another 2000+ on their way in August; we use remote control when possible to service the student PC's when they have problems. And unlike other "solutions" like VNC, this uses eDirectory for authentication and does not send username/passwords in cleartext over the wire.

Hey, there is nothing to be ashamed, if you are using Novell NetWare 5+ and/or Novell eDirectory with ZEN Works. Sure makes my job much easier ... in a few years, M$ MIGHT make Active Directory competitive with Novell's eDirectory ... but only competitive with TODAY'S version of eDirectory
