    How does a UPS work?

The wall feeds the UPS power, and the UPS feeds your devices. A UPS draws ~15-20% more power from the wall than it supplies to the attached devices. If the UPS has non-battery backup ports (for high-draw devices like laser printers), those ports only get surge protection and/or voltage regulation.

    logitech mouse and buttons

I've had the same problem with my Logitech mice... certain games just don't recognize buttons 4, 5, 6, etc. I have had limited success by disabling the Logitech software on boot and only using the mouse driver. However, you lose the advanced features of the mouse in Windows.

    Remote control of PC

If the machines use XP or Server 2003, Remote Desktop works great and is included. For an older computer, use a VNC program (I use TightVNC) Be aware that text is sent unencrypted, so it's not secure over the internet. VPN would be a good way to protect either remote control communication.

    MS Sidewinder FFB 2

Not sure... Microsoft seems to have dropped all support for their joystick products. My patch came on install disc 2 with the joystick. Gave it to my dad, so I don't have it anymore. Maybe check DriverGuide.com?

    MS Sidewinder FFB 2

You probably need the Sidewinder patch for VIA USB chipset computers.

Synchronizing files on Windows 2000 Server

I've been testing out some synchronization software at work: http://www.mobiliti.com/products.html Looks promising and the licenses aren't that expensive. I haven't tried the server-to-server version yet, but it might do what you want it to do.
  7. Having an intermittent problem with Active Directory on our W2k3 domain controller. Every so often, when you browse Microsoft Windows Network -> OurDomian, the list of computers is empty. When this happens, printers no longer show up in the directory. This happens at randomly for several hours several times a day. Anyone experienced something similar or know how to fix it?
  8. Disable APIC in the BIOS (usually requires reinstall/repair of Windows)

Using USB stick without administrator rights

You need admin rights to install the drivers.
  10. Download a program called AutoStreamer. Just select the original Windows disk, the service pack, and it does the rest.
  11. http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ Best site I've tried so far... only one that's been able to reliably show my cable modem's upload/download speeds. My service is 9mbit down/1mbit up, the above link regularly shows 7-8.5mbit down, 1mbit up. Most of the other bandwidth sites can't measure that fast and only show 3.5mbit down, 500k up.
  12. IMAP is good if you have a lot of server space and need access to your mail on multiple machines. POP is good if you have little server space and connect to the server via a slow line. I personally find the delete scheme used by IMAP very annoying.

    DVD Question...Writing to CD-R's.

    DVD Question...Writing to CD-R's.

There are hacked firmwares available for your NEC drive that allow faster burning on many DVD and CD medias. If your CD-R's only burn at 32X on the stock firmware, I would assume they are old/generic.

Web browser for DI-624+ Wireless Router

If you correctly forwarded port 80 from your router's external IP to your server's IP and it still doesn't work, your ISP probably blocks port 80. Try changing the port your webserver listens on to something else, like 443 or 8080. To get to your site, you will have to type: http://externaladdress:443

When you reinstall windows, make sure no other hard drives are connected.

What OS? WinXP's system restore is a beautiful thing sometimes!

Increasing access to windows XP inbound connections.

Wait, are you talking about the Windows sharing limit or the XP SP2 TCP/IP connection limit?
  19. Try different RAM or removing sticks. Onboard video uses system memory for a frame buffer, so if there's a problem with the RAM or onboard video, you can get crashes like that. Or you can try adding a real video card and disabling the onboard in the BIOS.

Increasing access to windows XP inbound connections.

It's not a 10 connection limit; what SP2 does is limit you to 10 new connections per second. However, if you want to change that, there are numerous utilities on the internet for changing the limit to 50 or unlimited.
  21. When you boot, press F8 to get the XP boot menu. Then select "Enable VGA mode" That will load Windows default (ie safe) drivers for your video card without forcing you to use safe mode. You can then install new video drivers.
  22. Definitely XP SP2. Microsoft hit the nail on the head when it comes to access point/key management. Just make sure you don't install the wireless card's proprietary config tools; the driver and XP SP2 are all you need.
  23. Sygate makes a good firewall for Windows. I use Tiny Personal Firewall now because Sygate wouldn't work quite right with connected VPN clients. Tiny is much harder to configure though.

    Win98SE and Jetdirect

There is an IBM JetDirect driver for Windows 98. I'd give you a link, but my router died and my webserver is down until the new one comes.

    Home Build PC

Check the BIOS for "Windows Install Mode" It artificially limits the system memory to 128mb so Win98 can install properly. You shouldn't have to install Win98 first; just boot off the Windows XP upgrade disc and run the installer. It will ask you to insert your Win98 disc for verification.
